I feel negative about us at the moment. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong. Ajose is bound to score. 2-1 Charlton.

At least you have a keeper, we don't.

Yes, horrendous title.

Must be the first time I've gone into a new season without the slightest feeling of excitement. Absolutely dreading it.

Last season was a complete disaster, this pre-season has been a complete disaster and I can't see how the next 9 months are going to improve.

Threadbare squad, injuries everywhere, no goal-keeper but will have a go at predicting a line-up, hopefully we'll make the 5/6 signings needed in the next day or so.

Philips

Fox
Johnson
Texeira (if fit, probably not)
Solly

Harriott
Jackson
Crofts
Foley (been on trial since July so surely we'll have signed him by Saturday)

Ajose
Lookman

Probably well off the mark with that, other than the front two it's a pretty naff starting 11 overall, hopefully with their on-field problems at the moment, there's enough goals in there to beat Bury but not confident.

2-1 Bury. Lookman for us.

Few changes in the squad this week so slight change in my predicted line-up. Away from home, I'd quite like to see this sort of 4-3-2-1.

Rudd
Solly Teixeira Pearce Fox
Foley Jackson Crofts
Lookman Holmes
Ajose

It may be the bottle of red I have just consumed but I feel a lot more confident looking at that, having Rudd in goal and not having Roger Johnson in front of him makes me feel better. Other than Fox who I do not rate at all that looks solid enough to me as a starting 11. The subs bench could be any concoction of youngsters though.

That looks like a very competitive starting XI. All things going well, you should be looking at top 6 at a minimum.

Yeah, have no issues with that 11 at all.

The problem for us is the the real lack in depth, we still need at least 4 or 5 bringing in I'd say and that's not even taking into consideration that Lookman and/or Tex could be on their way before the window shuts.

Tbf, depth at this level is a bit overrated. Burton got promoted with very little depth. Similarly, we bolstered our numbers with academy graduates while Barnsley utilised the loan market. The sort of depth that matters is not a fixed quantity but usually how well clubs react in the market to the circumstances of the division. For example, January is usually when the bigger clubs tend to kick on because they can afford to bring in those extra bodies.

Fair points.

We're going to have to utilise our youth a fair bit this season, a few featured quite a bit during pre-season especially as the loan market isn't as accessible as it was for Barnsley last season. Slade said he wanted 4 more before Harriott left yesterday but then signed Kevin Foley until January so I am assuming it is still 4 that he is after, we have 3 long term injuries in Diarra, Lennon and Kashi. We will look in much better shape if Slade gets the players he wants and when those three return.

Last season seems such a long time ago now, were Burton lucky with injuries?

Everything about today was an utter disgrace from a Charlton perspective.

  • The line-up and formation.
  • Slade's tactics or lack of.
  • Slade's substitutions.
  • The performance
  • Roger Johnson
That was hideous, far surpasses the majority of the crap performances we had to endure last season. Ricky Holmes is the only player who can leave with any credit, the rest might as well have stayed at home. No energy, no effort and just generally no interest.

One shot on target, but that was just a harmless long ranger.

Quite frankly, it was a complete shambles.

Slade did himself no favours, he got it all wrong today and then cowardly just walked down the tunnel at the final whistle without even acknowledging the travelling fans who had backed the team all game despite having to watch this turgid shit. Many of the players went to do the same before Jackson made them clap the fans.

It also appears that Roger Johnson turned to a disgruntled fan and told him 'don't fucking come then if you don't like it'. Didn't hear this myself but has been backed up by quite a few on Twitter, why we continue to employ this waste of space I'll never know.

So game day 1 and already the apathy has flooded back and I've had enough already.

Wankers.

Some Charlton fans came around the back of the MRE and there was a bit of an altercation apparently.

Yeah, I didn't really see any of it other than a few of ours trying to get on the pitch towards the end.

I've heard from a few that it got quite nasty and one Bury bloke ended up in a bad way, unfortunately sounds like it was orchestrated by our fans so a shit ending to a quite shit day.

Our fans are a disgrace. One trying to start an argument with me for telling him to calm down, and a certain famous person on a message board threatening me on the train back. These fans need to be sent to Antarctica

You're Katrien Meire aren't you?

The team perform like that and all you do is moan about the fans, no mention of the shower on the pitch.

Charlton were extremely poor. So much so that even when we didn't play particularly well we still won comfortably.

Possibly one of the worst performances from an away side at Gigg in a very long time. We were completely toothless in attack first half and still Charlton rarely if at all threatened. We won 2-0 but I'm not taking too much from it, much sterner tests to come at Gillingham and Coventry.

We didn't allow to play. Defensively we were excellent. We pressed and closed them down all over the pitch. A very comfortable win.

Bloody awful v us on Saturday. Even used a blatant handball to try and score. Tried his luck a against all our defenders. All had them in there pocket. Got subbed. Absolute waste of £800.000. Lazy and a cheat. Think Slade will regret buying him.

Yep. 1 game is all that's needed to judge a player.
