If we somehow can stop Bingham from scoring more than 3 (big "if") then we have a chance.

We should be beating Hartlepool, especially since their form isn't great. But we have an incredible habit of kick starting losing teams' seasons. This is another such occasion.

I hope we go for it and play attacking - we've finally got a holding midfielder to play alongside Berry which allows us to play a proper 4-4-2:

Norris

Furlong
Legge
Roberts

Donaldson
Dunne
Berry
Dunk

Corr
Williamson

Let's just hope for Cambridge's sake that this game doesn't have the detrimental effect on the remainder of their season that the ManU game had last season.
Yep, was the 23rd January 2015 that we drew with Man U, exactly 12 months. We followed that up with a storming win over Newport and then won about two more in the rest of the season and another 5 or so before December's excellent run.

Newport game was the game before, after the first Man Utd game we only won one game between then and Easter (Morecambe away, although Slew scored so that's really worth about 10 wins).

Looking for a result and a performance tomorrow, we really need to make a statement, should be looking at 3 wins from our next 3 home games, if only it was that simple....

Would go with the same 11 as Laker, although as usual wouldn't be opposed to Coulson over Roberts but no chance that happens and after a clean sheet last week it's hard to put up too much of an argument.

As he's scored 3 in half a season , all you have to do is keep him quiet for the first 2000 minutes and you'll be OK .....

We really should be winning. Again, the same 11 as Laker, but possibly with Coulson.
I really hope I can get back to Cambridge in time tomorrow

Psychologically it's difficult for players at this level to turn their attentions back to playing workaday teams like Portsmouth when the memories of a game against the likes of ManU or Hartlepool are still fresh.

442 would be nice and, even if we set up 4231 at the start, I'd also be tempted to go with Laker & Tom's 11. However, I think that Roberts and Legge need more than Dunne in front of them if Bingham is going to be on the rampage. Who do you drop to the bench to find room for Ledson or Newton? - probably Corr, so that won't happen.

It looks like we might need to score 3 to get all 3 points, so an entertaining afternoon seems possible. A decent crowd in prospect so I'll suggest:

3-2 in front of 5,040 (235 'Pools)

Sadly, in all probability, King Rakish will be warming up the bench because Ronnie doesn't know yet what a lethal striker he is and will start with Harrison instead. Obviously this is fantastic news as far as we're concerned, but I can't help but feel a little disappointed that the King will only come on for the last 10 minutes or so.

No way Pools won't find the net, unless their strikers have an off day that is, as we've all seen how much our back line struggles against fast strikers. No surprise at all with Roberts leading the line, but Coulson's hardly faster than him so that's not really the answer, so I agree with those of you who think we'll need to score at least 2 if we are to win this match. Which is what I expect after all, as Pools back four are nothing special.

I'm going for 3-1* in front of 4850 (Berry,Williamson, Ledson for the U's, and Harrison for Pools)

*which will get the more optimistic U's to start thinking about making the playoffs again.

Hmm, Pools look decent.

And oh I was wrong - King Rakish comes on after 35 mins. Shit.

edit - ok it's ht and Pools looking decent or not doesn't change anything as we should win this one. Sure Pools started the brighter side and Norris pulled off a couple of very good saves, but they've faded a bit, strangely enough after the King came on :dk:

I'm hoping for a better half, and more attacking play as so far we've been poor going forward.

'Listen, you can't do that......'
'Listen, I could feel the disappointment......'
'Listen, going forward.............'

I just want to let you now my thoughts Mr. Shaun Derry -
'Listen, you've been listening to Richard Money's post match interviews and, quite clearly, his words have inspired you enough to start spouting the same load of bollocks he used to spout. Another thing, Mr Derry, is that you're a shite manager too. Going forward my arse, what's the point if we can't beat sides like Pools? What's the point in resting our better players against Pools so they can play at Orient?'

We're actually not that bad a side just badly managed. Anyway, what gives you the right to beat 'sides like us'? You're just mid table fodder!

Should've been well out of sight but as usual we just sit deep, don't make any subs to slow the game down and got our just desserts.

Don't think we'll go down but would've been a huge 3 points to get clear

Our biggest failing today was team selection. Roberts aside, we were all agreed on our starting XI both on here and on our message board - it pretty much picked itself.

Derry claims he was resting Corr and Dunk while Donaldson is on his way back from injury. I don't care, these players have to start - you then get ahead and then look to rest people.

Robbie Simpson, while I really like him, is much better as an impact sub as at Dagenham. Ledson just is not on the pace of the game and I assume Everton have written it into his loan deal that he has to play. He's been poor for us for ages.

We had no width and were an embarrassment in the first half. The second only got better when Dunk came on - the whole ground was lifted.

We were so lucky to get a draw today and Norris getting man of the match speaks volumes. Sadly this season is not getting any better. Total shite frankly.

Another good crowd and South Stand Initiative provoked a shit disjointed home display and we were lucky to get a point - giving a sniff of optimism for our biggest away match of the season next Saturday. A bit of a contrast to last year at this time.

Pools could and probably should have had 2 or 3 more goals before Dunk, Corr and Donaldson (and Roberts) demonstrated the potential in the team - top 10 finish, with plenty of goals and better away from home. I remain to be convinced that Derry can realise that potential but happy to see how it goes for the rest of the season.

Bingham clearly galvanised those around him and distracted half and inspired the other half of our problematic centre-back pairing - but he didn't seem to do much with the ball himself.

Oh come on you're bloody awful. We gave you a 70 minute head start but you could only score one. You huffed and puffed but were more interested in time wasting then trying to win the game.

Worst side I've seen so far but we haven't had Yeovil or York at the Abbey yet.

We've been worse at least half a dozen times this season (not counting the first half yesterday, at York and at Wimbledon) - otherwise you're right and I can see another relegation struggle looming for the Pools.

Difficult to disagree or add to what's already been said about the game, our best starting XI is so blatently obvious, everyone in the stands can see it but we've had two managers this season now who just seemingly aren't able to recognise it. Derry has almost admitted as much in his interviews but not acted upon it, he's got no excuses next week. When we saw that lineup in the pub before the game it was clear how the first half would play out, and it lived up to expectations.

Re: the 3 subs, to be fair I can see that Corr is carrying a knock, he was limping as soon as he came on yesterday, and on the face of it I don't have an issue with not starting him. What I do have an issue with is that Derry has known Corr is not fully fit since he got here, which was why he didn't start at Morecambe in Derry's third game. He then got another knock at Dagenham which probably set him back again, so why amongst all the loan signings we've made have we not signed a striker of a similar ilk who will be able to slot straight into the same role? This bloke from Charlton looks lightweight, out of his depth, doesn't seem to fit into any sort of system that we play, and is certainly nothing like Barry Corr.

Donaldson has only just come back from an injury so again, fair enough that he's not starting, but once again, it's been blatently obvious for 2 years now that we need a right winger and we still haven't signed one. Again Derry tried to address this by signing the lad from Middlesbrough, who was out of his depth, fair enough, but that was 2 months ago now, where's the follow up? Donaldson still isn't the answer in that position but he does know how to play there at least and gives us a bit more balance, but he's been injured for a decent chunk of the last 18 months and my worry is if he gets injured again we'll be back to square one.

Dunk is the most baffling one. OK, he's had to carry the team, but this season will be the fewest number of games we've played in donkeys years. There's been no rearrangements so very few midweek games, I just don't buy it at all. If he's even 70% fit, he has to start.

4-4-2, stick with it, give Coulson a run, Berry and Dunne in the middle of the park, sign a right winger to at the very least cover Donaldson, and send this bloke back to Charlton and get someone in to at least try and replicate what Corr does, provided that we're doing as we should do and getting it out wide and putting it in the box. No excuses.

I didn't think Hartlepool were THAT terrible, passed it around neatly down the left in the first half. They probably realised Furlong was constantly out of position and couldn't win a header even if we were still playing now. How did Harrison(?) managed to hit the post during that goalmouth scramble?!
