I think they might be a tad conservative with the salary scales at the highest level though:

Maybe because such players were so good as players they didn't really bother with the coaching badges whereas most of the profile top managers stopped playing early or didn't play to that great a level as suggested meaning they had more time to "study the game"

Of course there are a few exceptions on both sides!

That Pep chap for example isn't bad I guess (aided by the fact he got a job with the best team in the World and now the richest..)

Now days I do think some high profile players do simply feel they can walk into any top job at the drop of a hat without really learning the trade.

I think one can be a manager without being an ex-footballer but it always helps a lot if you know the tips and tricks of the trade and that comes from playing.

Only know that because I am a Watford fan and he was manager in my first years of watching them.

I think most managers played to some sort of standard - even Jose and Wenger.

Bobby Charlton, England's greatest player. Not a manager.

Not at international level, but he did manage Preston North End for a couple of seasons in the mid 1970s.

As far as I can find, his last match as Preston manager (he signed Nobby Stiles as Player / coach) may have been away to Charlton at the Valley in the last match of the 1974/75 season in the old Division 3. Charlton had to win to be promoted in 3rd place (no play offs in those days). Preston led 1-0 at half time and Charlton had missed a penalty (How "Charlton" is that..?) but the Addicks ran out 3-1 winners in the end, including a brace of goals from Derek Hales, to be promoted, He had a short spell as caretaker manager of Wigan Athletic in the early 80s but does that really count..?

If it was indeed the last match as manager of Preston for the great man, then perhaps it's fitting that he ended it at the ground of the club that he shares a name with, and against whom he started his illustrious playing career.

He debuted for United in October 1956 against Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford, scoring twice in a 5-1 win and then, just to show it wasn't a fluke, he scored a hat trick in the return at the Valley the following February.

Truly the greatest player ever to grace one of the greatest clubs in the world. It's a shame management didn't work out for him.

There's no fixed requirement. It's just one of those things where experience can count and make a p[ositive different. But there are some very talented mangers who weren't playing pro. It all depends on the personality, temperament, and effort. Like anything else really.

You can but would you be successful , You should love the game (why u didnt play it if u love it ) Of course its better for one manager to know what is to be a footballer and when they need help or to be motivated , In my opinion if a manager is not former player its better to become manager at SEGA's Football Manager games
