One Christmas that stands out for me is when I locked my son in the cellar. We had a great time without him spoiling things by telling us what he wanted for Christmas.

Another one that stands out was the Christmas of 1977. One of my presents was a transistor radio. The first thing I heard on it was that Charlie Chaplin had karked it that very day.

The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas.

Oh, God. It was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was 9 years old. Me and Mom were decorating the tree, waiting for Dad to come home from work.

A couple of hours went by.

Dad wasn’t home. So Mom called the office.

No answer.

Christmas Day came and went and still nothing. So the police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart.

It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. And that’s when I noticed the smell.

The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father.

He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He’d been climbing down the chimney on Christmas Eve, his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly.

And that’s how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

Rest in peace. You will never walk alone.

In the 60's, I remember getting a tranny as my main present and tuning in to our local Caroline on Christmas morning.

Is that likely to happen nowadays?

Getting a footballkit and boots in the early 70's. My aunt bought them for me and she apparently cried watching me playing football in the snow with my dad, never used to feel the cold back then like i do now.

When we owned a pub and B&B, we had this nice Middle Eastern couple - a young carpenter and his wife - knock on our door one night on Christmas Eve. We were full so we said they could sleep in the barn with the sheep and errr the camels. Lot of noise they made in the night with all kinds of foreign looking visitors. Amazingly, she gave birth in the night. Baby boy. They called him Abdul, I think.

All my Christmases have been pretty boss to be honest, possibly to make up for my near-uniformly shit birthdays. I think the worst one was when I had a cold on the day and had a lie down in the other room, unable to challenge my grandma's insistence on calling them "Paki shops". Haha, and the time my uncle grumbled about how we should send them back because the Pakistanis around him celebrated too boisterously when they apparently beat us in the cricket.

My Mum used to put potatoes in the oven and warm them up so we could hold them on the way to school because we were too poor to buy gloves.

Not really but I thought I would go out of my way to crowbar working class stories in where I can as well.

Christmases from 1995 to 1999 were uniformly shite IMO. Three of those years I had to do the late shift (no kids you see), another I had to do the night. My old man died the other. They've been OK since mind.

Actually, now I think of it, I caught the Norwalk virus on Christmas Day 1994, and didn't eat anything from Boxing Day until New Years Day.

AND, Barton Bank fell at the last when about 20 lengths clear in the King George Chase on Boxing Day 1994. My grandad said "Yours has won easily here" as it approached the last fence.

This one Christmas people bought me everything I asked for. It didn't make me happy though. I realised being given things you thought you really wanted wasn't the way to get happy or satisfying at all. Now every Christmas I ask for money so I can buy the things myself.

We had 24 at ours one year when cousins were in their mid-20's and before they started going off having families etc. That one of the best I've had.
