Cliff Bastin scored 178 times for us. He cost just two thousand pounds. Unbelievable bargain really.

I still find it amazing when United fans talk about other clubs using money to buy success.

Vidic, arguably one of our best players this century, cost us about half of what Ibe cost Bournemouth.

Not only is it a comparison lacking in correlation, but it doesn't counterpoint what you quoted. Vidic received very high wages, relative to the era in which he played, and was a key player of what was consistently the most (occasionally second most) expensive side in England. His partner, Rio Ferdinand, was the record transfer for a defender; £30m in 2002. Manchester United's success, and every big club in England to varying extents, are the product of money.

So why is it just us who have been (for lack of a better word) attacked for "buying success"? Because other clubs (liverpool under Rodgers for example) haven't been successful?

Just United attacked? That's some serious selective reading you have going on there.

The amusing thing is that United's biggest attempt so far at buying success (ie the hundreds of millions they've spent in the last 3 years) has been a monumental failure.

You're comparing two transfers and using the contrast in cost to highlight the ultimate value of one of them. But the transfers took place in two completely different eras of transfer costs which renders the comparison moot.
Not two completely different eras. If you want an example from this era, you could buy Zlatan infinite times for the price of one Benteke.

Wait, you seriously believe 2006 and 2016 are comparable in terms of transfer costs?
More comparable than 1900 and 2016. You implied that they were completely different.

They are. World class players in 2006 would go for £30m. You can double that now. If that isn't completely different I don't know what is.

Compare and post Liverpool's net spend under Rodgers (plus Klopp if you like) with United's net spend since Rudolph left. No rush.

Simple as that. The squad is too complete and Pep produces victory after victory. The excitement will have to come from the race from 2nd-4th as City will top the table for the rest of the season I feel.

Well this thread was a bit premature.

Title challenge will be between Chelsea, City and Arsenal.

Isn't that something like £45k at today's prices? What a bargain! Even my club could have bought him today..

It's incredibly reductive to ignore the source of the funds tbh.

However it is funny to see how much they're spaffing about now though in an attempt to stay relevant. I know all about that.

Benteke still has more goals for Liverpool than Zlatan has for you lot. ;)

We get 1 trophy with 480m, you get 0 with whatever you spent.
We get 0.002 trophies per 1m, you get 0. 0.002 > 0
0.002 ~ 0. Isn't maths wonderful.

Kenny Dalglish, 440 000 pounds. Because of this I don't think the club should ever spend more than half a million on any player imvho.

From winning their opening 6 league fixtures to winning 7 of their next 14. Love it.
