Nope, it's the correct decision when you look at everything else other than position and the cup final. I believe we would have been in serious trouble had we kept Puel on for next season.

The timing seems a bit weird, why wait until half way through the summer to sack him when the decision could have been made a month ago. Unless of course they've been keeping someone up their sleeve and Puel has just been waiting for the P45 to offically drop through his letterbox.

He seems to have been a very devisive character amoung Saints fans I know at least.

Been on the cards reading everything in the media over the past month or so, any reason why Saints waited until the middle of June to get rid?

Any word on the next manager? Tuchel the favourite with SkyBet.

Yeah, if we don't announce the new guy in the next few days this timing will be very off.

And why at 10pm at night?

Announcing stuff late at night is kind of our thing. A few years a go it was to get one over the print newspapers, who obviously couldn't get the news out in the morning. Not sure if that's still a thing.

Unlucky with the League Cup but negative as fuck football at home has got him the sack and rightfully so. It was clear as day that the players didn't want to play for him.

17 goals in the league at home.
We played for a point against so many teams last season. St. Mary's was a fucking fortress under Koeman - Puel's negative tactics ruined that.
Shite team selections and negative football seeing us knocked out of an easy Europa League group. We played for a 0-0 draw at home to Hapoel Be'er Sheva - a team who got smashed when they went to Celtic Park earlier in the season.
His rotation policy - Have a good game? Score a goal? On the bench next game.

We only finished 8th because the teams below us were poor. We finished closer to the relegation zone than we did to 7th place.

Going to St. Mary's felt like a fucking chore under him.

Tuchel has ruled himself out. :( Shame, was always a bit optimistic.

Took them long enough. 33% win ratio isn't great, and his style of football made the attendances very low.

This seems like the news Southampton fans have been waiting for, congratulations.

Better hope you don't make a mess of appointing Puel's successor.

Frank de Boer and Mauricio Pellegrino are the two names on our shortlist now, apparently.

Our last Mauricio P.... worked out well.

A couple of Tweets from Le Tiss on why the sacking happened yesterday:

"He was given a chance hence the delay in sacking. Was stubborn and didnt want to change"

"Gave him a chance to change his style but he didnt want to know"

He certainly deserved a chance to stay, but yeah Puel was making the same mistakes from the first week of the season to the last, so he wasn't going to change now.

He might do ok. Like, he won't fail miserably. So that's a plus. But that's about the only plus I can think of.

His time at both Everton/Wigan doesn't fill me with even that much confidence. :( We'll announce Arouna Kone as our main forward next week and then bring in Niasse the week after.

Would be weird for Martinez to jack in the Belgium job right now for anything. A year out from the World Cup, he's got them smashing in goals, with a squad that has to give him a serious shot at the latter stages in Russia. Wait a year and continue his good work with Belgium, and club offers would be flooding in.

Unless Saints would be willing to let him do both jobs, which I can't see. I actually think it'd be a reasonable appointment if they got him. His style at least would be a better fit for Saints than Puel.
