i have a feeling the last week with regards the Chinese may be worrying the premiership a wee bit.

they will need all the money to compete.

In a secret ballot, seven or eight clubs are understood to have opposed the capping — those led by greedy Arsenal who charge away supporters the most — leaving the Premier League short of the 14-club majority needed to make such changes.

Love the irreverence the Daily Mail has for Arsenal. Wenger theorised that the Premier League would need all the money for players to keep up with the rest of the world. I think it's a bit of a cop out really, the Premier League are already well ahead of all other leagues financially. It would take a long time for China to be a serious threat.

Get ready for £30 million transfers of Jonathan Walters to Hull. Pogba to City for £500 million billion.

Just as the Liverpool owners have been boasting about "transforming supporters into customers" and announcing a big increase in ticket prices.

DAMN YOU CHINA.

It doesn't surprise me in the least, It's sad to say that in this generation money will always come before the proper football fan.

I'm interested here: why is there so much clamour about away tickets, rather than tickets in general? The poorest won't be able to travel away anyway, and the future generations won't bother travelling unless they have been indoctrinated/enchanted locally in the first place, home fans account for 90% of tickets, and no one says the atmosphere at top flight grounds is dying because of terrible away supporters. Anfield isn't remembered for its magical away end, it's the Kop that has to be saved. Why should you pay less to go to a Villa home game than a Villa fan? I don't understand.

In general, you assume that the 'away' fan has to stump up travel costs on top of an already overpriced ticket, which is why Arsenal charging £64 in an already large stadium is taking the piss

Villas home fans should definitely pay less though

So the seven clubs that opposed the cap are (supposedly) Arsenal, United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham.

Pretty much as expected.

West Ham? The club that's getting a new stadium for peanuts and subsidised running costs, as well as the same huge TV deal as everyone else?
That's pretty gross. Of all clubs in a position to charge lower ticket prices, they'd be a top candidate.

So Arsenal were the only club to own up to voting against it.

Very interesting.

Good on the BPL clubs, they are businesses not charities. Would you sell your old PS3 for £20 if someone else was willing to pay £60 for it?

Until all the dickheads out there stop buying tickets I've no sympathy for any of them. If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem...

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
I see Liverpool have scrapped the £77 ticket after the protest. (It's still the wrong side of £50 though!)

What they should have done is made it £93...

Not everyone selling a PS3 has a shit tonne of income each year which renders the sale of the PS3 irrelevant. That's the point here.

Demand at certain clubs will always be higher than supply. This is simply about giving people a right to watch sport regardless of their income, background etc. There is a huge group of people (kids included) who just can't afford to go any more. Yes, other people moan and protest but then go anyway, but as you can see today Liverpool fans have made a change which makes it slightly more affordable for other people who don't have that privilege of being in a position to make a stand. Not enough of a change admittedly, but its a start.

When you factor in travel and the ever-increasing cost of getting to the game, capping away tickets at £30 at PL level is actually not a bad idea. I think clubs are scared of being forced into bringing down prices for home fans.

With the amount of money coming in through TV deals, its greed from the clubs. Ticket sales are vast becoming a minor source of revenue, not the major one. Citing 'business' as a justification for pricing people out when demand will always outstrip supply at the top clubs is missing the point.

Think I read that some clubs could charge £0 for all tickets next season and still have the same income as this season due to the increased tv money.

So yeah, pretty shameful that they aren't looking to reduce their prices down to a reasonable level.

Good luck to yourself when it's £25 a ticket at Bristol Rovers and £20 a ticket in the Premier League then. I'm sure that will be great for the English game cha.

Ticket prices at this level aren't great by any means, first to admit that. I would like the TV money to be distributed in an equal way (amongst pro, semi-pro and grassroots), to help subsidise clubs at lower levels and help with fair ticket prices etc. As we've seen with EPPP though, the PL/FA hold football at levels other than the PL in contempt.

If it was done properly there would be more than enough to keep ticket prices at a sensible level in the PL, whilst helping out clubs at our levels to keep them low. The common factor in the failure of this model is the greed of the top clubs and organisations, because as you say a narrow focus on the PL doesn't help our game at all. But my argument is that people shouldn't be asked to pay £50/60+ to watch a game of football at any level.

Liverpool fans are so fucking stupid. With there new prices if you buy a ticket on the mainstand which is £59 every game it actually works out more over the season than there original pricing including the £77 tickets. Great move by there board into tricking the media and fans but still making more money

So a home fan will potentially pay a lot more to watch the same game in a same standard of seating?

I suppose it's a step in the right direction but I'm not sure it solves the root problem really.

Yep the issue is that tickets are overpriced generally, not just for away fans.

Tickets for Norwich v Newcastle next month (could be a Championship game next season) are priced at £50 each. That's ridiculous.

In return for gaining this £30 cap, PL clubs are losing the existing 200k per club away fund which they currently use to subsidise other away day expenses - travel or catering and suchlike. AFCB for example have used it to give us catering vouchers, cheap coaches, and cheaper Newcastle/Sunderland tickets.

So it's just like the Liverpool protest, it's being seen to appease the masses, whilst actually still screwing them and probably making more money Net.

It wonk make much difference to clubs like yourselves but for the fans of the big clubs who get charged cat a prices every game its a great saving and its about fucking time. Who gives a shit about getting a bit of free food anyway. Your club could still afford to put free travel on at places they will be making an extra 50million in tv money i cant believe your even having a little moan about it, its a big step in the right direction. People fell for the lpool ticket drop which has actually worked out that there owners will earn more over the season but this is a genuine step forwards.

Perhaps I'm just being overly cynical then, I just wouldn't be surprised if clubs ran the numbers and worked out they'd end up losing less money through this cap than they currently do giving up 200k per season.

For what it's worth, we've been charged Cat A at some fairly random places this season, Arsenal, Chelsea & West Ham all spring to mind. Southampton obviously.

Perhaps one day a cap could be applied to both home and away, and would apply to our other leagues as well. If this is a first step towards that, then great.

As blademan says, you'd hope that the TV money could be used to maintain the subsidies on these expenses you state are covered by the £200k.

I agree it needs to be part of a bigger movement, but its undoubted that the costs of travel etc. combined with huge away prices were the biggest problem.

I'm almost certain the next step will be Championship clubs lowering it too, can't see how clubs at that level could justify prices as high as they are currently.

I totally agree re. the Championship, in several cases that was more expensive than many current PL away tickets which is pretty scandalous.

You were charged £62 at arsenal? £60 at west ham? Are u sure

You were charged the lowest category at chelsea too

You were also charged the lowest category at arsenal which was just £26 and cat b at west ham so basically youve just come out with a load of bullshit
