Starts December 10th with Sanfrecce vs Auckland.

I will be cheering on River but given their current form, I highly, highly doubt they will win this thing.

With Barcelona in it there's not much to expect. But big chances of River being the other finalist.

Though Mazembe can surprise, like they did against Internacional at 2010.

Also want to see a bit of Guangzhou to check how Conca is doing, he was brilliant when he was at brazilian football.

Ugh..this pointless tournament is still running?

Hardly pointless, and its been running since the CL has began. Its not going to stop anytime soon.

No such thing as a glorified friendly.

This tournament is also more than one match, and everyone wants to win it. Yes, even the Europeans care (unless they're English)

I agree Mazembe can surprise. Especially the way River Plate are playing.

Conca is still in China? I thought he went back to Fluminense?

He came back to Fluminense then after one year back to China again, I supposed it was to Guangzhou since he played there at his first passage at China and Felipão is now the coach but just searched and Conca is actually at Shangai Dongya now. Anyway Guangzhou has a lot of south american players because of Felipão's influence so I'm curious to see how they're doing.

Emirates cup is also a tournament with more than one match. Don't think fans of any club would be too bothered about not winning that "tournament. "

That's pre-season though. That's different. Those ARE friendlies, not glorified.

I can guarantee any fan outside of maybe England would love to win the Club World Cup. Even if the South American sides are nowhere near what they used to be, its always nice to know that you are the champions of the world. Do you think Corinthians fans didn't care about beating Chelsea 2 years ago? Its not as important for the Europeans as they are always favourites but a few years ago I think when Barcelona scraped past Estudiantes in extra time, Guardiola was in tears.

Ever since money took over football, the South American sides are no longer world class but they still do put in a fight every single time. At least the Argentines do. Estudiantes came close to beating the best side in history a few years ago in Barcelona, San Lorenzo only lost 2-0 to a team who was beating every single team 4-0 at the moment, Corinthians obviously beat Chelsea, LDU Quito only lost 1-0 to United. Its clear we don't win anymore but we still fight and that's what makes me proud. River Plate might be playing like shit but I still expect them to give it their all, even against a far superior Barcelona side.

Brazilian sides the last few years have been embarrassing though, bar Corinthians Internacional and Atletico Mineiro didn't even reach the final and Santos didn't give any sort of fight against Barcelona losing 4-0. So I far prefer the Argentines in this competition to represent the South Americans.

As for the Mexicans as I think they deserve a shout, they have the quality to take on elite sides but they choke. I want to see Club America vs Barcelona this year but it wouldn't surprise me to see them get battered especially with how shit Club America are playing at the moment.

Point is, its not a pointless competition. If its just because the Europeans cruise it, then by that logic that UCL would be pointless as well because Barcelona, Madrid and Bayern are always the favourites.

I apologize for the long posts but I do think people overlook this competition. If suddenly one day a South American team becomes world class, this competition would be the only way for them to prove themselves as that.

So Guangzhou Evergrande will face Barcelona for the semi-finals.

The match of Guangzhou vs Club América wasn't that bustling until the last minutes when Zheng Long got the tie and in the additional time Paulinho made the difference. I was curious about how Robinho, Ricardo Goulart and Paulinho were doing at Guangzhou. Robinho seems not to be in a good moment but Paulinho and Ricardo Goulart are doing good. I also read that Goulart got the prize of best player of the chinese championship, when he was at Brazil he was a very important player for Cruzeiro's titles and despite he's doing great at asian football I think he could have more visibility if he had stayed since he was even getting chances at national team before. Anyway, retaking the main issue, despite the victory for what I saw it's more probable it will be really tough for them against Barcelona.

And Sanfrecce Hiroshima will face River. Mazembe started better but Hiroshima could bring danger with speed and got the good score of 3x0.

River Plate is the first official finalist. Not an amazing performance though, they got some difficulties to face Hiroshima that was weaker mainly in defensive and passing sectors. Barcelona is the most probable adversary for the finals and if River gets to play with the same posture as they did today they will be completely shattered.

I'm happy River Plate made the finals but as Voltage said, they can't play the same football they have been for months now otherwise they will get destroyed.

Tim Vickery was talking about this on the World Football Phone In about a year ago. Basically saying the old intercontinental cup died when the Northern European teams started dominating in Europe due to a combination of the rough games and the lack of a connection similar to what the Southern European teams have with the South American teams and that essentially the lack of interest in Britain is a hangover from that.

Barca won their semi 3 - 0 through a Suarez hat trick. Messi injured again though?

Renal colic usually doesn't take that long to recover so I think Messi probably is better, also read him and Neymar are training normally today. If Barça gets MSN for the finals then things get even harder to River.

I think even if Messi is half-fit he'll want to play as its an important match, and so will Neymar who has been training a while now so can't be far off full fitness.

Suárez was the guy again. Not a surprise that he was named the best player of the competition.

As expected Barça dominated the match but River's fans passion until the end was really nice to see.

While I'm not surprised by the scoreline, its scary how good Barcelona's front 3 are. I thought Suarez had a terrible game but he still managed to find 2 goals.

I was impressed with how River Plate started the match but after the first goal they fell apart. Shame but the better team won. Congrats to Barcelona for being the champions of the world.

And congrats to Pies for getting his wish.
