To me the clubs are in four different categories.

Coventry, Barnsley and Sheffield United who have spent a large portion of their recent history in the top two divisions.

Bradford, Preston, Bristol City and Swindon who are historically lower Championship/upper League One sides.

Rochdale, Yeovil, Crawley and Fleetwood who are historically League Two or, in the latter three's case, non-league clubs done good.

And the rest of League One's clubs who wouldn't look out of place in either this league or League Two.

Oh come on Wigan will be a big-ish club at this level next season. Some people seem to think if your sucess was after the 80's you're pointless. I'd put them about 6th-10th.

Swear when Wigan were last in this League when they went up with us they only got 7000 at home against us for a top of the table clash and averaged 5500, think even we averaged more than them that year!

I suppose Wigan are bigger than us too seeing as they won the cup. Never mind the fact they will be back down to 4 figure crowds soon enough.
One cup win doesn't make them a big club, we made the final in 1909..

Wigan wouldn't be out of place in L2, have been overachieving for far too long, and as the thread on Blackpool goes, the same for Wigan - 'they are merely sinking to their natural level'

Awful thread and somewhat cringeworthy on what some of us are thinking.
For starters, Sheffield Utd and Coventry City are much much bigger clubs than ourselves, they have a long top flight history.
I dont know what other City fans think we are but we are nothing over than a Championship/League 1 yoyo club and have been for near on 30 years

Barnsley have only spent 1 season in the top division in their history

I refuse to give Barnsley any credit whatsoever.

Weve only been in the top flight for 1 season out of the last 22 and about 5 seasons in the last 40 odd.

Growing up though over the last 20 odd years Barnsley have rarely been out of the Championship in all fairness.

Not a dig by any means, but I'm bloody glad City and Swindon aren't massively comparible in size, and this thread would be an absolute absolute nightmare.

Preston haven't played in the top flight since 1961, I refuse to give them any credit whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong I'd be happy to accept this dribble from a 60+ year old North End fan, but you?

My Dad's mate who is a Leeds fan reckons that we are on a par with Sheffield United in terms of club size, excluding home averages.

IMO -

1 - Sheff Utd
2 - Bristol City
3 - Coventry
4 - PNE
5 - Bradford
6 - Barnsley
---------------------
24 - Swindon :fish:

It's all a matter of opinion, but how anyone can say a club who only had 2,500 more home fans than we did away fans in a game at their stadium they just got back are a bigger club than us is beyond me..

I know that's just one example, but historically, we are probably a bigger club than Coventry.

As of now, we're still a bigger club than you. Obviously you are better than us at the moment but not bigger, I'm not sure how you can justify saying historically you are bigger considering you've never won a major trophy and have only been in the top flight a handful of year in your history.

Maybe in another 10-20 years time you will be considered bigger as we will probably continue to languish in the bottom 2 tiers of the football league for the foreseeable future.

Just deal with it mate, one day you might get a rich oil tycoon and come close to replicating our history and class.

Until then, accept your mediocrity

Blimey, even we can beat that. We were in the top flight from 1976 -1980 but we don't like to talk about what happened afterwards! :(
Preston's history is undeniable and deserves respect, as does that of the Blades and Cov.
I find this type of thread quite pointless WTGR to the OP. Just look at Bournemouth, a small club absolutely flying in comparison to Coventry, a big club on a downer at the mo.
Even though size does help with success, it's not the only factor, especially short term.

We're bigger than a fair few in this division but probably just inside the top 10. We've got a decent long history certainly compared to the likes of say Peterborough or Doncaster and bigger support than say Crewe, Yeovil or Rochdale etc.

You'd need to look at all factors of club size to make an accurate ranking but I'd say Sheffield United are probably the biggest. At current Hull, Swansea or Wigan are bigger than a lot of this division but historically they'd be one of the smaller sides but have had finance to reach the Premiership.

Depends on what you clarify as recent, since 2006/07 we won promotion that season to the championship, then one game from the premier league while coventry slipped into league 1, then a good few seasons in the championship while coventry continued to struggle in league 1 and now we've been relegated it looks like we could be going back up this season with coventry are at risk of slipping to league 2 and I suppose you can chuck in a trip to Wembley for us. So it comes down to how you classify one club being bigger than the other.
Winning promotion from league 1 in 06/07 during a period that we never dropped below the second tier doesn't make you a big club , and a JPT final doesn't count either.

then a good few seasons in the championship while coventry continued to struggle in league 1

How long do you think we have been in league 1? We were relegated in 11/12 and you followed the next season so you didn't have a good few season in the championship whilst we struggled in league 1, you had one extra season where you were relegated. That's one year over about the last 50 seasons where you have been in a higher division than us in the football pyramid, just let that sink in for a moment.

Looks like that will change next season and depending on what you do in the future you could be considered bigger in 10-20 years time as I expect us to continue struggling.

Success is decided by money, that much is clear. You can be the biggest club in the world but if you've got no money you will struggle.

There's always the new stadium factor too. Unless you're Coventry or Colchester clubs often benefit from a massive increase in gates upon the move to a new stadium that makes them look bigger than they historically are. Chesterfield, Rotherham and Shrewsbury to name a few. Obviously that bunch who have financed their way up the leagues like Wigan, Hull, Swansea and Fulham and then general plastics like Brighton too.
