If you really want to do this, the top 5 would be:
Average Attendance over their history
1) wolves 35124.
2) Bolton 34342.
3) leeds 33890.
4) sheff w 33133.
5) birm 33018.

Years in the top league:
1) bolton 73.
2) blackburn 72.
3) sheff wed 66.
4) derby 65
5) wolves 63.

Trophies won (only counting major such as euro, fa, league cup and top league winners)
1) Blackburn 10.
2) Forest and Wolves 9.
3) Sheff Wed 8.
4) Leeds 7.
5) Bolton, Hudds, PNE 4.

The only teams that consistently figure are Bolton, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday

Got 20.9k historical average for Wednesday. 17k for Bolton.

Kind of blows my Reading 10.3k and Brighton 11.5k argument out of the water somewhat...

true, but I still think it shows a reasonable estimation of club size...point is, there is now hard or fast way to sustain this type of discussion, recent history puts some clubs above others, but historical should account for something...form my perspective, I find it interesting how a lot of people have Bolton so far down their lists

I should do my dissertation on this topic and settle it once and for all.

Are the historical average attendances of those "top 5" from your list. Still very good, high numbers over a long period of time. Probably are the top 5, but not nearly as high as you state.

Lets face it, people can throw loads of variables in there like cup wins, league wins and years spent in the top flight but that can be skewed by clubs like Wigan, a small club which have bought their way to the top.

The only thing that really determines the size of a club is fanbase and in terms of Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley, PNE & Huddersfield there isn't a great deal in it and we're all in the bottom half of this league. They're all historic clubs but they're all from pretty small towns in close proximity to some of England's massive clubs.

Even I'd agree there. 6th is where we're at I reckon.

In terms of trophies and top league appearances, you've got to consider that the football league was tiny in the opening decades. I wouldn't say wins and appearances in them years to be as valuable as those won from 1922 onwards, where there were 80+ league clubs compared to just 40 before the first world war.

Not much in it between any of the top four, each could give a pretty good argument for being top. I'm sure honours/attendances could argue against a few of the positions but purely my perception.

Always find these kind of threads a little tedious. A lot of pride taken in how big your club is and then you end up losing to most of the teams below you in the list, battered by about a quarter of them and watch the so called "small fry" piss their way to promotion whilst your club continually fails at this level. At least we've got 20k plus crowds though eh!

We did one of these on the old board years ago where I argued like crazy that we should be 2nd/3rd biggest etc and the following day we got smashed 4-1 at home by Scunthorpe United. Never returned to that thread as in the grand scheme of football it means cock all unless you're in the PL. Always worth a watch as, like myself in the past, people do get a little flustered eventually with other people's opinions!

Most sensible thing I've seen you post :)

Overlooking Wolves’ glory years of the 1950’s… I would say you’d be down where Birmingham and Middlesbrough are. You have been deep-rooted in mediocrity for the last 35 years. Large potential though.

I'd have us third bottom but the one or two who have MK Dons or Brentford above us in some lists, seriously need their heads testing.

I'd say that's about right for us.

Don't normally bother to get involved in these threads but in no world are Hull and especially Fulham bigger than us.

MK Dons seem to be a bit low on a lot of these lists. Considering they're about 10 years old, you can't rate them based on the usual methods so you have to think outside the box and use a bit of artistic license.

I can see them being in the top flight a lot sooner and a lot longer than half the teams in this league and would put them middle of the bottom half.

But at this present time, they're a pretty small club compared to most in the league.

However if you was to put them in order of potential, just look at the odds for this season. Next season everyone's potential could change completely. At present, they'res potential for Fulham but once the parachute payments stop, potential will drop significantly.
