I am an academic researcher working at Loughborough University along with those at UMass (a world-leading sports management university) and, if you haven’t already, I would urge and love everyone to take part in our international study and put your views about your clubs rivals on the world stage.

Cheltenham's, and I daresay a lot of other clubs, like Mansfield's, aren't on your list of rivals.

We only have one rival... the gap has closed a little this year.

Forest are 2 leagues above you now. They take pity on you.

A lot of Derby fans are part-time Burton fans, in fairness, so I don't think there is a genuine rivalry there at all. Although I didn't grow up near Burton, going to games meant listening to Radio Derby and listening to Radio Derby meant that I also had a vested interest in Burton and really wanted them to do well. For some, it's no different to Matlock Town, Mickleover Sports or if you're my neck of the woods (or at least where I grew up) Ilkeston Town.

I remember Burton's FA Cup replay in 2006 and although I didn't go, I do recall a large number of Derby supporters went to Old Trafford to watch the game. I can't recall the exact number of away fans, but I remember there was several thousand - was it something stupid like 10-11,000 in the end? It was nearly 17 years ago now so I could be misremembering.

As he acknowledges said post, and then replies to it. Marvellous.

It’s still the record I think. 11,300.
Good day to be a burglar that night in east Staffordshire

We had a similar “rivalry” with Histon for the three years they were in the Conference with us, but Histon is even closer. It’s really hard being the bigger club in that scenario!

We have the same thing now with FGR - the difference is though that because we haven't played our traditional rival for so long (25 years and counting), the vast majority of our fanbase has never been to a proper derby - myself included. As a result, in desperation of wanting a real rival, a lot of our younger fans have latched onto the rivalry with them.

Older FGR fans probably feel the same as older Cheltenham fans in that there is no animosity between the two clubs, in fact we have fans who would go to FGR when Cheltenham were away - again, myself included.

Same with Lincoln, used to go to Sincil Bank if i couldn't afford to go away. They've always been the odd club out, Us, Grimsby, Mansfield, Notts and Doncaster concentrate on their real rivals.

Growing up watching Lincoln, it felt we always played you (90s). Just checked and it seems we played you most seasons throughout 80s, 90s and up to 2005. Then nothing since, somehow managed to dodge each other moving divisions. That 5-3 playoff game was absolutely ridiculous!!

Similar view here...have some pretty decent chats with Cheltenham fans about football, nice to find someone round here that isn't obsessed with rugby, only rivals when we are playing each other.

Our traditional rivals are Gloucester or Shortwood...we did manage an FA Cup game against the former but have been restricted to pre-season friendlies against the latter in recent years.

Shortwood? Don’t be so pathetic! Majority of FGR fans want them to do well.

Yep completely tedious survey on a tedious topic.
Every season a "student" comes here with a faux survey for what real reason ?......."an academic researcher working at Loughborough University along with those at UMass (a world-leading sports management university)" ??? If they're "world leading" then they already know this mundane stuff ................anyways, if this article is anything to go by then these University of Massachussetts dorks can go boil their heads https://qoshe.com/the-daily-signal/...s-liberty-university-with-pride-day/146761906 ..............................as an aside , this 'student's mentor has been going at this since before Sept 2021......I think he ought to know all this stuff by now.................... https://www.sportbusiness.com/2021/09/david-b-tyler-umass-the-conflict-and-cash-of-rivalries/ ......... compelling subject to discuss over an awayday prematch pint no doubt

Hey, stop bumping your gums...where did I say that I wanted Shortwood to do badly, I didn't, what I did say was that many of our fans see them as traditional rivals...that is what this thread is all about...jeez!

They are not our rivals in any shape or form. Cheltenham are far far bigger rivals, whether you like that or not.

I don't know who FGR's rivals are - you can pretend there's something with Cheltenham if you like, but if we ever play Gloucester City in a meaningful game again, then FGR games wouldn't even be on the radar.

It's no different to before FGR got into the Football League and we used to concoct fake rivalries with Bristol Rovers and Swindon, or even bloody Rushden and Diamonds. They cared about us because we were local (Rushden wasn't even that), but their hate was for someone else really.
