Watching the West Ham game this afternoon and wanted to bring up the poor quality of corners. I've noticed it in a few Premier League games this season and in particular my team Man Utd. We have had Daley Blind taking them for the last few games and I can barely remember him beating the first man once. Last season we had Phil Jones randomly taken dire corners.

My question is do teams bother training this particular set piece anymore? Who is your teams corner kick taker and are they any good?

Side note: Always have to laugh at the lines men when they stand about a foot away from the corner kicker but every single time the ball is placed outside the circle :10:

Henderson and Coutinho today, both can't whip a ball in like gerrard, set pieces is an issue both ends of the field. Had Moreno taking a few when we went to a back 3 earlier in the season under BR he wasn't that bad, but I think we'd benefit from taking short corners, and trying to get a shot away in the hope of a deflection due to the lack of conversion rate directly from corner kicks.

West Brom probably practice set pieces, don't think liverpool do despite, benteke and some good targets getting up.

We practice various short or ground based routines, mostly because we aren't exactly packed with massive players.

Success varies hugely.

I've often thought why attacking teams don't have a man at the "front" of the 6 yard box. Everton did this in the 90's under Joe Royle and it helped turn bad corners into good ones.

We've scored one goal all season from corners. Half the time we may as well knock it out for a goal kick they're that bad

Weird thing about Hendo and Coutinho to a lesser extent is that they can whip a great ball in in open play but at set pieces they are gash. Liverpool would be better playing short corners just now or play Smith more to get the balls into the box more.

We've been terrible at Corners since Giggs retired. not sure how we can be so poor at taking corners season after season.

I gave up hope on corners and free kicks since Nani and that hope has never returned.

No one is as bad at taking corners as Ashley Westwood, I can assure you of that. Luckily he doesn't take them any more, tends to be a mixture of who takes our corners.

OP, the ball doesn't have to be in the quadrant, just needs to overhang.

Always annoys me when fans and even commentators (whom you would hope know the rules) lose their shit about this

Yeah, corner kick quality in the Prem is annoyingly bad, it's like most managers have just neglected it.

I remember listening to a radio interview once with these guys who had studied set pieces in football and written a book about it. After statistical analysis they concluded that corners were not much of an advantage for the attacking team in that teams rarely score from them (or at least they're no more likely to score from them than in general play). I wish I could remember who or what the authors/book was because it sounded interesting.

I seem to recall Spurs have scored a few off the top of my head. Dier and Alderweireld x2? Imagine Eriksen takes these?

Sounds about right, although I believe corners could be more efficient a way to score if teams put more effort into practicing them.

I think roughly 5% of goals scored per season are directly from a corner, or something along those lines. Considering the number of corners a team wins over a season, from a statistical point of view they aren't that beneficial. Unless they're against Everton, then you've got a great chance of scoring

The biggest surprise yesterday was that we scored from a corner...well aided by the goalie.
