The apology is for subjecting the Welsh supporters, long known to be lovers of wonderful choirs, to the most gawd awful Christmas carol half time show I have ever heard! It was truly dreadful. The choir master (a title he really doesn't deserve) held the only microphone and it was his, and only his, dulcet tones that had the same affect as fifteen cats scratching a blackboard.
Painful does not describe the experience.
