Does a lack of consistency stop a player being world class?

I've noticed so many people saying that Yaya Toure is world class this season when every time I watch him he just strolls about the pitch, completely uninterested for 89 minutes and then decides he wants to be the hero in the 90th minute.
I'm not saying he isn't talented but surely if he worked hard for the full 90 City would probably be making a stronger challenge for the title.

I wrote about it in my blog if anyone cares to read it.

Surely only 1 minute of being unplayable doesn't make you class. It's like when Robbie Savage called himself world class the other year...

World class to me is someone who would be in a 11 v 11 game of football with the worlds best players. Yaya Toure hasn't been near that for 3 seasons.

Pretty much the above, except I'd put players in tiers. There are a few players at Manchester City you could argue are top tier for their position, Yaya Toure has never been in the top tier of midfielders.

With 20 goals in the 13/14 season, I'd say he was top tier then. But since then, no. Same with Ramsey in his 1 incredible season, and now Kane who's turned into a penalty taking stat padder

Yaya Toure is the definition of the pre-requisite 'On his day' when we're talking about if he's world class.

Harry Kane has 16 league goals so far, only 5 of them penalty. I know you got donkeys as strikers at Arsenal but no need to be bitter about it.

I'm glad someone agree's, he just doesn't look interested at all.
When he does though I'm normally the first to admit he's played great but if I'm honest I've not seen him have a good game in about 2 years.

Did anyone watch him against Arsenal. He did nothing and then came alive in the last 10 and scored. Checked SkySports and he got a match rating of 8...I couldn't believe it.

Have to agree with this, Kane is a good striker.
Sometimes I feel the limelight is being taken away from him by Dele Ali suddenly emerging from nowhere.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
He's always been languid and taken the game at his own pace and in the past I think there's been an argument for him being one of the top midfielders, certainly in the Premier League. His approach to the game can make him look lazy, especially when things don't come off, but he generally does what he does very well. Against Kiev when everyone said he'd been shit until he scored, he had created a goal and had a 98% pass accuracy rate.

He sits and does what he does, and when the opportunity arrives for a power run past players or a casually taken 25 yard goal, he'll usually take it. He's better when he doesn't have to worry too much about what's going on behind him, and having the Ferdii in there in the last two has made a big difference in the last couple of games.

'World Class' is a bit of a pointless label, because no two people have the same opinion as to what it means. But although he's pushing 33 now and isn't likely to get any better, and is probably looking at a last hurrah in New York or China or something, I doubt he's going to look back at his medal haul - or his bank balance - and wonder 'what if'.

I see where you're coming from but the amount of times I've seen him just strolling through games giving no option, not wanting the ball and frankly not being interested is beyond a joke in my opinion...
He did the same thing in the League Cup final the other day, lackadaisically wandering through the game and then in the last minute almost scored but was stopped by a good save from Mignolet.

Yaya was a world class player with a terrible attitude.

Yaya is now a declining player (though still a very good one - not world class) with a terrible attitude.

So, as you can see, there is at least one thing he has displayed consistently.

No idea who has the time to make these things. But while he doesn't charge around the place like mad, he's square in the middle of most of City's best chances. Always involved and available, and rarely loses the ball.

Can't believe I actually watched all this video haha.
But all I saw in it was Toure playing simple little passes and then not looking for a return. Ocassional runs but by the end of the video he looked fucked and completely uninterested. I think Lee Cattermole could do just as good a job in that role.
