Big game this.

So big I'm actually bothering to go to an away game, as are up to 1999 other Gills. Big news for us is the return of Deji Oshilaja at centre back. Still not heard much about Ryan Jackson's injury, but the back 4 does start to have a more familiar feel to it now. I say back 4, but we played 3-5-2 last time out, and wouldn't be surprised if we did that again. Loft is out now, to add to the injury list of Dack, Egan, McDonald, List, the aforementioned Jackson and El Abd. All that said, our first 11 is still pretty decent in my eyes. I would expect us to line up:

Nelson
A.Morris - Ehmer - Oshilaja
McGlashan - Hessenthaler - Wright - Dickenson
Williams
Norris - Samuel
G.Morris, Garmston, Donnelly, Osadebe + plus some kids on the bench

Southend have surprised me this season, not least for the fact that Adam Barrett (who looked past it 2 years ago) has been a key member of their side all season and they're not bottom 4.

2-2.

We're nursing a dreadful injury list and I'm not sure that the return Deji will help to be honest. When he returned from his injury lay off he didn't look as solid as he did at the beginning of the season, now he's back after spending 2 and a half months in Cardiff's reserves, so I think it'll be a while before he's fully up to speed.
Sarf-end looked a decent team at Priestfield and I think best case scenario we can hope for is a draw, but I'll say 2-1 to the home team.

Can't wait for this one, 2000 gills fans cheering the boys on.

Going to be a tough game as southend are a very physical side,

Will take a point now

Do love a big game in front of a packed Roots Hall, really helps when the away team brings 2000.

I'll go for a 1-1.

I would settle for a draw tbh, with losses for Cov, Barnsley and Bradford thrown in for good measure

Proper derby game, draw pretty much spot on. Both halves followed similar trajectories - Gills on top for the first 15 minutes, a 15 minute lull and the Southend on top for the remaining 15. Throw in a very good atmosphere, a homer ref and real desire left on the pitch and that sums up the day.

Good point.

A homer ref.

He was far from it. He gave us very little.

Point was a fair reward I think.

Well that's clearly not true. As proven by the amount of times that Gills players had to approach the ref about fouls on them that he had just ignored. Some of the yellows were an absolute joke too.

You're conveniently missing the number of times that Tyrone Barnett and others would be pulled and held down and just ignored.

Or the number of fouls on our players going ignored but itty bitty fouls being given shortly after.

Not to mention that the referee got in the way twice for us.

Also, the yellows were justfied, your number 11 was lucky not to be sent off.

McGlashan should've got a yellow for diving, I'll give you that, but the one he actually got booked for was a decent tackle. There was a point in the second half where Southend got 9 decisions in a row (at least 4 or 5 particularly dodgy), before we eventually got one, and even that was given by the linesman rather than the inept ref.

I agree the ref was terrible, made loads of errors. McGlashan got away with 2 clear bookings, and then a dive, before he gets booked for nothing. The ref guessed far too often.

Great near 2,000 turn out and noise by the Gills support. Found it a bit surprising that Southend never had much in the way of vocal support, although those lads over on the side had a bit of a go, but there weren't that many of em unfortunately, perhaps 50 - 100. Made it so much like a home game for us, with no vocal competition, felt sorry for Southend's players really.

Well, that felt like a defeat at the end.
I thought we did more than enough to win the game and should really have been two or three up before Southend scored.
Agreed our support was first class.
By the way, the stewards at Southend are absolute pricks.

Roots Hall is not particulary good for generating an atmosphere, I was in the west stand and could barely hear a peep from the travelling Gills fans for much of the game (a few customary cries of "Gill'os...Gill'os" was about it). The noise just doesn't seem to travel out of the stands particulary well.
