Stolen from Magic's Grandstand, it's the return of the cryptic crossword!
The game
Your job is to solve the cryptic clues and to complete the crossword as quickly as you can in your PMs.
You have 24 hours in total. Once that 24 hours is up, you will be positioned based on how many clues you have managed to solve. If more than one team manage to finish it, then your positions will be sorted by what time you managed to finish it in.
A bit of help?
The first 12 hours of the game will simply see you get the crossword layout, the clues and the number/position (1 across etc) that the clues refer to.
After 12 hours, I will send every team the number of letters in each word in the answer. So for instance, the answer to 1 across might be Joe Hart. If that was the case, I'd send you (3,4). This may help you with clues you are stuck on and also confirm whether you're right on some of the clues you've done already.
What could the answers be?
Names of footballers at the Euros.
Names of nations/cities at the Euros.
Names of managers/coaches/referees at the Euros.
Names of stadiums used at the Euros.
Basically, anything to do with the 2016 Euros.
Advantages
Once again, the top 3 teams get an advantage for the 2nd game round.
Timings
You will be PM'ed the crossword at 7pm Sunday evening.
You will be sent the number of letters in each answer at 7am Monday morning
The game will finish at 7pm Monday evening. I will then announce the results, the advantages and post the 2nd game round as we have quite an immediate turnaround between Matchday 1 and 2.
So, 5th match from 12 and we have three 1-1 draws there, two Croatian victories and a larger score draw.
Remember, crossword for the 2nd advantage task will be sent out at 7pm tonight. Next week will be a bit crazy but this gets into more of a normal routine when the knockouts begin.
1) Team Gullit - 14 2) Team Casillas - 11 3) Team Zagorakis - 10
3) Team Klinsmann - 10 5) Team Olsen - 9 6) Team Deschamps - 6
Excellent perfect score for Olsen there which puts them back in the hunt for a decent points haul from round 1. Remember every position counts and could be vital after 6 weeks of this.
1st place - 5 game points
2nd place - 4 game points
3rd place - 3 game points
4th place - 2 game points
5th place - 1 game point
6th place - 0 game points.
If any team manages to complete this crossword by the way, I'll be well impressed. I've tried to make it quite hard. Could well come down to how many clues you manage to get.
Please remember to bold your answers in your PM obviously.
For any neutrals, I'll stick it in here near deadline tomorrow so you can play along.
Some very interesting predictions here as we move into the 2nd half of the round.
Casillas and Klinsmann will be praying for a 2-0 which would really put them in the hunt. Gullit play the 2nd of their 3 jokers whilst Zagorakis play the 3rd of their 5. A correct result for any of the jokers here would put them in a great position.
