We need to treat it like the 98 season and play first team every game as much as possible, didn't stop half the team playing 60 odd games and still winning!
I do agree that we should be looking to play our strongest XI most of the time, but we do need to keep the fringe players fit and fresh too. The 97/98 side had the luxury of a reserve schedule, which we barely have this season. I do think there's a few that could do with a rest and a few that could do wit starts this weekend, personally. Would you play the strongest XI in the trophy as well?

No probably not and I agree we should rest some, I just don't think we should go in with the mindset we will comfortably win and can rest half the side like some seem to think.

Personally I think he should just carry on with what he has been doing all season and make one or two changes to the starting 11, not much more than that. If anything I would also give the other keeper a go to see if he is any good.

We’ve got Denton, Asante, Clarke, Carline, Hollis plus potentially Kerr, Weston and Khan out with injury depending on how they are after all being subbed with injuries vs Southend. Agree it’s got banana skin on it but I’d still be in favour in swapping some of our back up players in and taking that risk, certainly wouldn’t judge Rowe for it. Its a squad game and we need to use our squad, simply put.
Understand, If players are carrying a potential long term injury.
Think this is where a manager is judged on his decision making.
Hopefully he,ll get it right, But i do agree the League is far far more important.

I’d love to know clubs and managers real feeling towards the cup at our level. Obviously they make all the right noises but does the kudos/prize money/potential gate money make up for the extra games/risk of injury?

Cracking localish game for us, but it does seem like small potatoes in comparison with the game against Stockport the following week.

Because we have had a good start to the season and no one has heard of our opponents most fans seem to think we can rest the first team, rock up with the kids and win.

So for that reason I wouldn't be surprised to see us lose. Hopefully Hurst doesn't see it that way and takes it seriously.
Our team is full of kids anyway! Haha I don't see anyone suggesting playing kids, just bringing in the liles of Crocombe, Pearson, Longe-King, Coke, LJL. All very experienced pros and only being kept out the first XI because of how well they're playing. It's a long old season and no reserve games, every player gonna be needed to do a job at some point. For me it's a perfect opportunity to give the bench some game time. Should be good enough to beat Bromsgrove. If we're not doing well, have McAtee and Sousa on the bench to make an impact. If we go out with a team full of experiences pros, we go out.

Absolutely huge game for us against the old enemy from down the A37. It would be a big enough game in normal times but with what's going on at Huish Park at the moment it could be make or break for the management.
Very big game and I think the crowd will turn if we don’t get a positive result. Personally I think everyone is going a little overboard at, ultimately 2 draws and a defeat. But with this game and the rumoured takeover happening in the near future, it could be a massive week for the club. Hopefully Julian Jenkins consortium is the chosen one, however I expect it to be Priestnall’s mate Glenn Collis’ that gets the nod.

It’s trickier for the recently former league teams I think because even in round one and two, 75% at least of draws aren’t that interesting. For those who haven’t been in the league before drawing Crewe or Oldham or someone at home is still quite interesting because it’s unfamiliar, but for someone like Notts it’s just a league game from a couple of years ago and would probably get a smaller crowd than a league game.

There’s a handful of draws that would be well worth it financially - someone like Mansfield, Lincoln, Wednesday or whoever - but the odds are stacked against it.

Financially for this round it just isn't worth it unless you're one of the much lower league clubs, like a Chertsey or Bromsgrove, winners get £9,375 losers £3,125.
Chertsey will be very annoyed we are absolute shite, have protesting and boycotting fans, because of course they take 40% of the gate money, I mean they probably would have got better revenue had they gone to Bath City.

The prize money is crap throughout, you've got to get to the 5th round before it gets to six figures. As you say there are not many games where financially it would be worth it early on, Sheff Wed away? How many would turn up if they drew Southend at home? 5,000?

No wonder Phil Brown always prioritised the league over the FA Cup. You'd get more money just from 15 minutes of TV in the playoffs in the league rather than failing to get to the FA Cup 5th round.
I've always thought that until the quarter-finals there should be a ban on all Premier Division games being televised. The way it's set up at the moment just makes the rich, richer

Yeah no doubt we will rotate our squad around this weekend especially considering the injuries we’ve got as others have alluded to.

Think the likes of Tyson, Payne, Whittle, McCourt and Mandeville will all start this one.

Looks like we have 3 defenders available for Saturday going by rumours. One of them being Demetriou as player-manager

The one thing Wild hasn't nailed since he's been with us is the cup comps. We've been awful in the fa cup the last 2 seasons. Although last year 70% of the squad were playing with Covid so maybe slightly understandable.

We've been handed a banana skin at Pontefract but let's be honest about this it should also effectively be a bye. We all know the cup can throw up some results though.

I'm quietly confident we'll be in the first round come Saturday tea time though.

4-0
:ffs: :ffs: :ffs: Barely ten games into a season he declared was going to be a relegation battle because our "crap" manager had fucked up his summer squad building, that same manager is now a MASTER of EVERYTHING :fl:...except cup ties. Oh and rewriting history now- when we went out of the cup last season it was because we were "crap" and had a "crap" manager, now it might have been because he was wrong about that and maybe COVID did have something to do with it afterall. Rest assured, normal service will resume as soon as we next lose a few and Wild will be crap again. This clown is a JOKE. :fl::fl::fl:

Marine are flying high in the Northern Premier League - West Division. After their high profile run last season will this be a false start or the beginning of another run for them?

anticipating a weakened team from us, but you never know
Losing 4-1 in The Cup at Marine was the ultimate humiliation for Shaymen fans, and we knew then, we were coming out of the Football League that season. When we next encountered them, we were on the way back from oblivion in the Northern Premier league, and Jamie Vardy was making a bit of a name for himself. There was a supporters evening the same week with a few players in attendance, and they were asked, if they got a couple of goals ahead at half time, could they floor the gas pedal in the second half and really go to town on them. They did, and it was music to hear the home fans complaining they'd been humiliated in their biggest home defeat in 60 years. Karma. :bdick::cool:

If you're serious about winning any game, you must ALWAYS play your strongest team, chuck. Lose, and see how the fans lap up your "resting players" excuse. :ds:

Judging by Bromsgrove Sporting’s Twitter they seem to be expecting Man Utd to rock up into town and I think they may get a shock when they realise they are only playing against Grimsby Town FC.
PFFT. Get over yourselves, chuck. Pontefract, on tickets sold, already guaranteed a record crowd for what they've declared "The Biggest Game In Our History" :ds:

Hurst has regularly said he intends to use the whole squad this season so I think he’ll rotate to some extent tomorrow. Not massively, but I’d be surprised to see Crookes, McAtee, Fox and Taylor start

In theory this is our easiest run into the first round ever. 3 step 4 teams in a row. Got a feeling tomorrow will be a tough game. Bedfont will be well up for it but a new ground to tick off and if it goes badly at least we can do some plane spotting.

It seems the fans are voting with their feet, not many tickets sold so far. Could be a bit embarrassing attendance wise. I agree Collis sadly looks to be the more likely candidate.

Alty at home tomorrow. I've always thought of us as being generally at a similar level, however you don't get where they are in the NL without being a half-decent team. I expect them to completely out-football us, and us to completely out anti-football them. They'll still probably win though.

Being the biggest game in the history of a team who play at a roped-off park pitch close to a closed down coal mine isn't really something to shout about. You played plenty of teams at their level 2008-2010 anyway!

Alty are a couple of notches above Southport's level, they generally have what it takes to get out of Conference North for a year or 2, at least once in a while. :ds:
