Feigning a head injury while defending; a new tactic.

The new rule that came in this season gives defenders a chance to stop play by falling over holding their head. The game restarts with the ball given to their goalkeeper. Northampton used it to their advantage yesterday; anyone else notice the tactic being used against them, or in fact by their own team?

We've got them at theirs on Saturday. We never get anything there. Hopefully they'll time waste themselves to a goalless draw and I'd take that all day long.

They never really got going (Northampton) and we could/should have won; think they'll get better though as the season goes on (as will we I hope). They do like to fall over when they lose the ball and the head holding almost turned into a pantomime towards the end (Oh yes it did!).

Cheating Donny at it all game against us last Saturday, even before they had a man sent off.

As opposed to the rest of the teams in the league who dont do anything like that and all play liquid football? Every team does it, particularly away from home when you have a lead. I dont like it when we do it or other teams, but its not exclusive to us.

There's jovial talk of our training system to teach forwards to flick the ball onto a defenders arm in the penalty box rather than shoot, and all defenders to learn how to hide their arms unless holding their heads!

Yeah, I know it's far too common in football to bend the rules and time waste, something needs to be done because it pisses everyone off. Our goalkeeper getting cramp towards the end of games last season helped us get promoted, but it got right up my nose and doesn't sit right with me.

Northampton have been shithouses at stuff like that for years, nearly as bad as oxford

"Position of the situation is relevant. The ball is dropped for the defending team goalkeeper in their penalty area if, when play was stopped the ball was in the penalty area. If outside the pen area, then for team that last touched the ball. "

So there you have it, ref will stop play if player is rolling around holding his head (even if he's faking it like happened to us), defending goalkeeper given the ball!

Time to wave physio on in play. Then stop only if it interferes. Would soon leave it to just genuine cases.

for me another way to stop it would be if you go go down injured when you’re off the pitch you’re off for say 5 mins, that would soon stop it.

A potential head injury is serious so I reckon something like this isn't a bad shout. It's such a shame that footballers will use these tactics to their advantage. Of course players get knocks to their heads but to use it cynically will be adapted by teams and there needs to be a way to try and negate it as much as possible.

But then teams are potentially penalised for having a player fouled. Seems a difficult balance to find.

I really hate all this 'game management' stuff. Rewatched a classic from 20 years ago during the first lockdown and it was really just so noticeable how much better the game flowed - everyone just got up and got on with it. Giving each other the ball back for throw ins, not trying to steal a yard everywhere, not trying to see the game out by staying down constantly nearer the end etc. Just play each other at football and the best team can win.

I echo above too that I also hate it when we do all of that stuff as well, as we're obviously no different to the other 23 teams in this division that do it. Makes it a much worse spectacle and I'd say it's one of the factors behind my seriously waning interest over recent years.

you’re right, it’s far from perfect.

However of course if someone’s off for a head injury maybe a 5 minute hold would make sense to ensure they’re ok to go back on.

Behave, good grief that happened once stop bleating about your sides abject failure to look like scoring against 10 for 50 mins, that’s Bradford’s problem. If you had been half decent you would have won

Play off semi final second leg last season? You did exactly the same at Sixfields to kill the tie.

The Pearl clutching and high horsery is odd to see really

Like I said last week, I know we were not good enough to beat you on the day, so not looking for excuses. The fact remains that your lot went down on half a dozen occasions clutching heads as if a sniper from the kop had taken aim, pathetic.

We were not good enough to get even a point at Barrow yesterday, not looking for excuses, Barrow fully deserved their win based on their second half performance. No cheating or shithousery from the Bluebirds, they beat us fairly

We can shithouse with the best. I think we were the first team last season to fake a concussion to get an extra sub on... Farman also goes down every time we're struggling so we can take the pressure off for a few minutes.

Yesterday I think we were going all out for the win, so we were never gonna time waste or slow things down.

The only thing that killed the tie was the goal.

Refs need to have discretion to play on for a few seconds - when theNorthampton player went down we had the ball in space in their half. Refs will often play on in rugby until there is a stoppage. Drop ball should be back to the team in possession no matter where the ball is.

'Shithousery' is becoming such an over used term in football now.

We have to be careful with this.

I honestly thought an Orient player was feigning a head injury in the box yesterday. I had a good view. Nobody touched the cheating so and so.

A bit later, during another Injury break, I noticed the player wander over to the physio and ask him if he had a cut to the back of his head and get it checked out and cooled down with some water.

Obviously I got it wrong but I would have sworn he was play acting.

Yes, it's difficult; but a compulsory 5 minute 'head check' for anyone going down with a game stopping head injury would be good for everybody and stop any play acting.

Or stop players seeking the treatment that they need...

??? Surely if the game is stopped the player will get the treatment he needs.
I think he means that a player might choose to play on with a head injury rather than risk being off the pitch for 5 minutes.
