Rumours afoot that the FL is to rename its three divisions next season to enhance its identity:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...be-renamed-next-season-in-major-overhaul.html

Through my own linear thinking brain it's surely absolutely essential that the powers that be nail down and secure the naming rights for 'The Football League Tinpot Division' before those pesky upstarts at the Valderama Conference have their bi-monthly General assembly in Brian Barwick's pigeon coop.

After witnessing the full abject indescriminating horror of the Conference personally, I do realise that the title actually does belong to them, but surely it's our aloof, cocky and downright unemotionally callous birthright to simply ignore their existence and bemoan our own fate by snatching the name for ourselves before it's too late. Just to make ourselves feel even worse about the crap we put ourselves through in the name of entertainment,......and before about 8 of our teams start shitting ourselves and looking over our shoulders later in the season, praying to stay officially Tinpot of course.

Thoughts or better ideas for a suitably grim moniker?

How's about Division 4?

Always liked that.

completely agree.

lets get back to div 1, 2, 3, 4...........much easier.

not even more f*cking Americanization.......why do people seem to think a jazzy name will suddenly make everyone go 'ooh I want to be apart fo that'

It'll probably be to introduce the B Team league............or else the Hull owner can buy it and call it the Lions league, Tigers League and Cheetah League I suppose

Might be able to do 1,2,3 and 4 once the European elite league kicks off and the top 5/6 teams fuck off :D

Don't really follow the logic. How is a new name going to bring in a younger crowd? Does someone think the average football fan isn't young enough? Has any one of these people actually met a young football fan before, or seen the AMF crowd? Does anyone really pay attention to the name of the division their team plays in any more?

The Football League isn't an energy drink where the only thing anyone knows about it is what its brand it... it's the Football League... football is the national sport... what more brand do they need?

Basically what's happened here is someone with designer specs, an ironic beard and Converse sneakers (yes they referred to them as sneakers) has gone into a meeting and told the bods at the FL that their brand isn't digital enough, and doesn't appeal to the social media age because focus groups or something.

So let's call the divisions as follows (hashtags are compulsory).
  1. #irony
  2. #yolo
  3. #bantz

I hope they change the shirt number/name fonts as well. I'm sick of the sight of them. They've been irritating me for a while now. I've gone into each of the last 4 or 5 seasons hoping this will be the last season of these fonts, but they stay.

Get rid of names and numbers all together.
Just have the players Twitter handle, maybe followed by a neat and ironic hashtag abbreviation ?

Failing that, one of those new square barcodes would do. The ref can then just simply scan the back of the players shirt with his phone, completely eradicating Graham Poll style mis-bookings.

But surely the reason that the Premier League has grown so far apart from the Football League is due to a spectacularly successful rebranding exercise of its own?

Odd double standard.

I think we're stuck with the Premier League being called exactly that. If so I would prefer 1, 2, and 3 for the Football League.

In a perfect world I'd prefer 1, 2, 3, and 4 but I can't see that happening.

Do you honestly think Premier League Grew because it changed its name from Division 1 to the Premiership???

Premiership just got the right media coverage and the right corporate model at the right moment to the right areas.

they are just very fortunate the other leagues are so unbalanced because otherwise I don't personally feel the premiership would have held onto its massive foreign catchment.......the quality of the premiership has been poor for quite a while and its only that the other leagues are so lob-sided to a handful of sides that I think premiership has kept its appeal.

well that and acting like hookers at every break opportunity.

When people clarify their teams position they always say second tier etc... why not simply 2 3 and 4 .... when league 2 was division 3 , they were kidding no one , it was division 4 ... There could be a case for regionalisation , not so much for the clubs but for the fans

Superb ideas, I hope to see the day when football shirts are tops like something from Tron, hashtag handle on the back it would also have LED read out of live tweets scrolling across a players shoulder blades. Plus the barcodes will save paperwork, all discipline issues sent straight to FA headquarters and all details sent out to the scoreboards of the stadium.
I also hope to see every player electronically chipped from head to toe with sensors on every dead ball line and goal line to let everyone know just who knocked it out for a throw in.

As for another re-branding - YAWN

The two entities were separated by light years from almost the moment they split apart, it had nothing to do with the 'brand'. The people who set up the Premier League saw it as a business model, potential for money through sport, this was something certain people at the FL just didn't see, or get, and it took them far too long to catch up. The whole link up with sky, the aggressive marketing to the far east within the first few years got the ball rolling and it's just spiralled from there.
You'll note the Premier League has never needed a re-branding, they know what they've got, they know where it's going and they stick to it. It's time the FL worked out what it stands for and what it is and to stick with it.

I like the "straight to FA headquarters" idea alot. That way an offending player can have his fine sat waiting for him in the dressing room before he's even slow walked it from the field and eyeballed the gobby opposition fans, who've taken great delight in his pathetic dismissal.

They could even fit the dressing rooms with a card reader, making it so that the cretin has to pay his fine before his mobile is released from his locker.... Of course he'll pay it immediately because he'll want to tweet about the injustice!

We really ought to think about patenting options.

So what you're saying is that the Premier League has a very strong brand, which is pretty much what I said, yet you framed it as disagreeing with me.

People that run big businesses see the importance of brands.

I was disagreeing with you saying they had a 're-brand' they had no such thing, they were a new entity which went about football in a new way that the FL were reluctant, and some of their members wholly against. I agree that the brand is very strong though and they have kept up their initial good work.

Seems an odd rebrand, the current 'brand' feels to be much more high profile than the old divisions.

That whole system will work perfectly until Darren Drysdale referees his first game under it... then it'll all fall apart.
