At the moment there are stories about the preposed football league shake up , all covered in a handy thread here.

But i was wondering what people's opinions were on the possibility of tying in a premier league shake up. I'd recommend a reduction to 18 teams (as i believe was orginally preposed) to reduce the amount of games.

I wouldn't be apposed to 16 teams. I think less games makes the league more special not less.

So thoughts?

IMO more games the better, I mean the play-offs are still on, yet i'm still suffering from withdrawal issues

18 teams? 16 teams?

Why not just have the top 4 and have done with it.

Then maybe if that's too small, we could invite Barcelona and Real Madrid in, then maybe Inter and Juventus too.

Or would that be too many games again? After all, who wants to actually see football matches? How boring would that be.

Can't be just top 4 you need 3 to get relegated again

Someone's worried about their PL status!

Keep yer wig on m8, may never happen!

Premier league is great, but I'm sure the novelty will wear off and im sure it wont be forever. Fair to say it wasn't exactly what I signed up for as a Bournemouth fan!

But I do get peed off with the constant rotation of hair brained ideas that come out literally every year or so. Greg Dykes gonna pop up in a minute, I can feel it. He'll suggest we start drawing league tables out of a hat or something.

*And I might be on a train slightly tipsy with work mate drinks after a fucking long week.

Hah, I'm only kidding. Tbh I don't think reducing the number of teams has really been seriously mooted since the inception of the PL. I think it's probably a relatively innocuous idea compared to some of the other suggestions that have been floated (absolutely hate the idea of B teams, for instance) but I don't see any need or desire to change the status quo.

You lot are awfully tetchy. i wasn't talking about b teams (terrible idea), or protecting certain teams (like Phil Gartside did), or the so called european super league. I'm only interested in English football here (ideally division 1 - X, championship and premiership have always been silly names), i certainly don't want to close the door on teams like bournamouth or swansea before them working hard and getting to the top division, and i believe everyone agrees that Leicester has been great for english football. Their's no agenda here, just a plain question, will a reduction in games help the league quality?

If next year or 5 years or 50 years from now united are relegated i'll still follow, good enough for you Mr Prediciton King?

But i do think the quality throughout the league suffers from the amount of games played. Personally i'd not play in the carling cup, if your not going to take it seriously then don't play in it, let those who do want to take part.

Their is also the argument to reduced the amount of international games, to free up weekends for more league games, to keep players fresher. But that option isn't on the table, league restructuring is.

I've been a long time fan of the Premier league being reduced to 18 teams as was the original aim when the Prem was formed. However my view has changed recently and 20 is fine. the carling cup is fine and the FA cup has already been devalued by the FA by sticking it on a weekend with other games and then 5:15 kick offs, making 2 clubs from the North west go to wembley for a semi etc. the number of games are fine. with the amount of money around now clubs should be able to afford big enough squads to cope.

What would help English clubs in Europe is stop pissing about with their fixtures before European games. Let teams playing on Tuesday plaay friday night if they want to or Saturday lunch time instead of the idiocy that is making them play at 4pm sunday. Other European leagues help their clubs in Europe by allowing games to be moved, the Prem only cares about Sky.

The football league proposal of 4 more devisions of 20 makes fantastic sense if it allows more of the Conference teams in. B teams or Scottish teams would be a disaster

The problem with football in this country is all stemmed from Sky and their ridiculous kick off times, this in turn causes fixture congestion and lengthens out the season which totally derails some clubs.

And it doesn't look like changing anytime soon.

If anything mate it's only going to get worse, with talk of the European super league along with talk of finishing the Premier League season overseas. Heart and soul being ripped out of the game.

Don't make sense an aditional Football League level...

I think Premier League clubs needs a less congestionated schedule.

I truly believe this a handicap compared to La Liga and Bundesliga clubs.

Why not ending FA Cup replays?

I'd be far more inclined to call it a Premier League shake up for the Football League...

They're already playing 8 less games than the rest of the FL, at what point is the level just right?

La Liga has the same amount of teams as the Premier League, the Bundesliga only 2 less. Add in a winter break for both league and cups, and surely the schedule for those two leagues must be really congested after Christmas, which is when the Champions League gets harder, yet Spanish teams are frequently in the Champions League final. The reason we aren't as good as the elite is because the players aren't good enough, simples.
