Right, we've signed this Bajner fella and let's be honest - we've got no idea if he's shit or good but he'll probably be a cult hero regardless and someone we'll still mention and laugh about in 10/20 years.

Any other clubs had a foreign player appear from almost nowhere and gain hero status regardless of them being good or not?

We had our own Ali Dia, an unknown from Nigeria signed on loan called Godfrey Obebo.

Story goes that our manager told him to warm up during one game, but he vanished. He was later found in the changing rooms stood next to the radiator.

Nestor Lorenzo came to Swindon after appearing for Argentina as central defender in the 1990 World Cup final, persuaded by Ossie Ardilles, our manager at the time.

That was pretty surreal.

He was a brilliant player, but on a big per-game appearance bonus and we couldn't afford it. So he played in the reserves (I remember watching a reserve team outing against Arsenal where he played in midfield and completely bossed the game).

That was pretty stupid.

But he was a hero of mine.

Adriano Basso, signed from Woking (or out of contract) and went on to be a star player for us over 5 years being part of the team that got us promoted to the championship and 1 game from the premier league.

George Koumantarakis (Big George)

Came with 'Champions League experience' from FC Basel, Greek-born, South African international, 6ft'4, flowing locks...

He was generally a big lump who scored a few tap-ins, that said, his record was better than some give him credit for, scoring 5 in 17. Got injured on international duty and then disappeared forever.

Thorsten Stuckmann is the current one.

Youl Mawene came in on a free from Derby and is the best defender I've ever seen at Preston. If it wasn't for a cruel knee injury in a friendly he would definitely have gone on and played in the Prem.

Pavol Suhaj. Signed from Slovakian side AS Trencin. Useless for Crewe, dumped off to Nantwich, useless for them and apparently ended up working at Kwik Fit in Colwyn Bay if a rumour I heard is to be believed.

Bertrand Bossu. Was shit in all but one of his games, in which he had an absolute blinder against Charlton in the FA Cup when they were 4th in the Prem. Made a stunning triple save late on to win us the game 3-2.

Also loved Mamady Sidibe (Mali), Guy Ipoua (Cameroon (I think!?)) and Brent Sancho (Trinidad)

Vincent Pericard - ex-Juventus and absolute shite.

Phillipe Cuervo would have made mega cult status but for injuries.

Jan Fjortoft - say no more

Remember him scoring at Saltergate against Vale whilst trotting on as sub? Nutted it in straight from a corner & never broke stride.

Efe Sodje, Rodney Jack and Clayton Ince, were all big cult hero's at Crewe. Also Ademola Bankole despite him being one of the most useless keepers about a fair few fans loved him.

Yeah and we paid £75k for him. £75k for a player Steve Davis decided almost immediately wasn't up to playing for Nantwich Town. I know SD is no real use in the transfer market but quite what was wrong with Dario the day he agreed to pay that for Suhaj, fook knows

Juan Ugarte was a hero till we realised he was shite.

I'd say George Bankole fits perfectly into this category, he was pretty much universally loved despite being a really, really terrible keeper. I'm not sure how he stayed our no.1 for so long when Clayton Ince was sat on the bench but Bankole's "3 saves when 1 would have done" and attempts to take on the entire opposition 11 were fun whilst they lasted.

Mathias Pogba's hero status with Crewe fans far outweighed his actual ability. Fans had a chant for him from about the 2nd game of the season 2 years ago.

Morike Sako was pretty funny. This goal being his best moment in his entire career, I think.

Robin Van Der Laarn was quality for us

Andreas Lipa less so after Nobby Horton signed him after seeing a video of him play.

Achille Campion is already sort of a cult hero for scoring loads of goals in the reserves but not getting a chance in the first team. Now got suspected broken ribs so we're not likely to see him for a while yet.

Mehdi Kerrouche is my standout, a lazy Algerian smoking 30 a day, but had a cracking touch and a knack for scoring. Obviously was going to fall out with Paolo.

Those Torquay highlights are some of the worst I've ever seen...

For us, it has to be Jonathan Téhoué... What a beast! If you don't believe me...

Jonathan%2BTehoue.jpg

Look at him!

He also scored an equaliser v Arsenal in the FA Cup to force a replay. 12 goals in 62 games, most of them as a substitute, the guys is an utter hero.

John de Wolf. Never heard of him before he appeared from Holland, never heard of him after he left.
He only played a couple of seasons, I think, but he had a fucking legendary name, he looked like a 70s hit-man and named his kids Stacey, Desley and Rodney. What's not to love?

Spanish bloke who scored our winner in the 1999 Play-Off Final against Leyton Orient. Put out a film called Scunthorpe Hasta La Muerte (Scunthorpe 'till I Die)
