Hello from an Australian born and raised supporter of football.

Since I was a toddler, my grandfather has brought me numerous adult sized Rotherham kits over on his holidays, presumably since they were the only size he could get just before the Australian summer when he came to visit us. I still wear the circa 99/00 away kit I got as a four/five year old to sleep in when we have guests around and just underpants are inappropriate and, thanks to him, I have an immense interest in pretty much all aspects of the sport and most sports in general. I don't overestimate my abilities to contribute to the majority of the topics on these forums, but I'm pretty well versed in Australian football and think I will probably like to ask questions every couple of months or so, so I feel I might as well sign up and say hello now.

Cheers.

Thanks.

I've not got many questions at the moment, but I'm sure I will if I get into this. I doubt many on here have seen much of the A-League and I really have no idea what it might be on par with in Europe and elsewhere (some of the successful players here seem very limited, yet others seem incredibly talented), but it's fun enough to watch to justify the season ticket I bought mid last year. It's very difficult to find streams for Rotherham matches, which I care the most about, so I've begun fully supporting my local national league team and I'm trying to find out how to qualify to coach local kids teams here, but the FFA haven't replied to me just yet. Anyway, thanks for the reply since I'm sure I'll have many questions to ask eventually as well as this one. Do you think it's worth me starting an A-League thread in the worldwide domestic football section?

I'll probably get around to just doing an Asian football one since I watch plenty of that since time differences aren't as much of an issue and more exciting stuff happens in a larger catchment area. Also, I'd hate to seem like a cocky Australian who thinks their country is worth much more than the rest of the world.

Absolutely not, you go for it - welcome aboard. Are you a cricket fan by any chance? Cocky and Australian comes to mind a little easier then ;).

I saw you beat Central coast 6-1 last week. Strange, but very entertaining game. Could have been 9-3, but the Mariners defending was absolutely abysmal. The A-league is probably on about par with top end league 1 and low end Championship standard from what I've seen. Decent and normally quite entertaining goal wise.

I watch loads of cricket over the summer, but I don't particularly like Australian cricket. I support them in every sport but cricket. My sister and I were hassled for wearing England shirts to the last one day game they played at the Gabba, so I'm not too fussed about going to see it live here again. Melbourne and Sydney were alright when I was younger, but Brisbane seemed to be full of what we call bogans. Football has a nicer atmosphere here. I saw that brilliant England loss to New Zealand live in Wellington at the World Cup this year. They had a Hyundai on display over the boundary between mid off and cover (or whatever that spot is called) and Brendan McCullum hit a six straight through the windscreen of it. He was ridiculous. I'm disappointed New Zealand didn't win because people here love jumping on the bandwagon whenever they do well and it's painful to listen to them since they can spot that I have a slight accent, but I don't think there is a significantly better team at the moment.

That was an odd game. I was there and had to take my mother since she had come down to help us paint. Central Coast looked poor, but Brisbane didn't look like a controlling side for the whole game like they used to and still won 6-1. The own goal wasn't great, but it's what you come to expect having inexperienced defenders and Jamie Young in goal.
