After losing 4-0 to Rochdale midweek, The Saddlers entered this game needing to put some points on the board, preferably three & earn their second win of the season. Although a goal couldn't be scored, which is no surprise as the Midlands club have only scored a mere 6 goals all season, a 0-0 draw could be considered a respectful result.

As a Walsall fan myself, it's terrible to see us in this situation where we seem to find it hard to not only get wins, but score a goal.

In my opinion I believe Gillingham edged the game, even though we had more efforts on target. The Gills having 60% possession to our 40% is extremely dominant, although we passed the ball really well.

Gillingham manager Peter Taylor reported this after the game:

"Walsall showed that they were one of the best passing teams in the division last year.
It was always going to be a difficult match as they came here after getting beaten 4-0 in the week, so it's obvious they're going to be more determined.
I'm not sure we had a cutting edge. We did some decent things, but when we eventually got to that final third I didn't think we had enough cleverness either with the delivery of the ball but also the position of the players to be in an area to get the ball.
It's nothing to do with not playing with each other.
I think we half know where we want people to be on the pitch. Unfortunately when it's out there in the match, that's the time to make that right decision."

Although we didn't pick up three points, we got one and we have to look forward to Saturday and can hopefully knock off Doncaster at home, while Gillingham travel to Sheffield United who suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands to Swindon.

Match statistics (Gillingham stats first row, Walsall second) -
Possession: 60% - 40%
Shots on: 2 - 3
Shots off: 4 - 7
Corners: 6 - 5
Goals: 0 - 0

Overall we looked like a decent side that just need to train on adding the finishing touches to a dangerous chance.

Yesterday was all about not getting spanked again. Teams near the bottom go from away game to away game and get battered 4 or 5-0 so it was pleasing to show that Tuesday was something to do with injuries, Rochdale's momentum and our normally very good back 5 being awful. We won't beat Donny, or Bristol City.

I agree. Bristol City is a definite no no, I just hope we can at least come away with a draw against Doncaster, although the chances are very slim. It's was great to see our defence being resilient against Gillingham though.
