What's this Icelandic clapping all about?

The name 'Tranmere' is the only football club name with Norse Viking origin in the top 5 divisions. I guess some are latching onto our more Northern roots. If the whole Kop was full and everyone did it, it'd be quite impressive. As it is, it's just a bit tinpot :ffs:

I'm pretty sure Grimsby is nordic in origin, and York comes from Jorvik.

...and Scunthorpe. Didn't know Tranmere had Nordic roots mind. How do you do an Icelandic clap?

There's always a boost in attendance to see a winning side. It happens at all clubs and has happened with Tranmere and Lincoln this season. An easy example of this is our own Crazy Imp. He barely attended a game for the past five seasons when Lincoln were terrible and even cried off THIS VERY FORUM at one stage. Suddenly Lincoln are top the the league, he's going to games again and is back posting on here. It happens.

York was the Danes IIRC though it wasn't such a hard and fast distinction between your various Scandie raiders back then. Ivar the Boneless!

The suffix -by: borrowed from the Old Norse býr meaning ‘town’ or ‘dwelling’ (also the modern Danish word for a town or city, and the Swedish and Norwegian word for a hamlet). So basically Grimr's town. Also means lots of towns in the country have a similar origin!

So, about the football then... a visit to a not-very-nordic sounding Wrexham for us, the last of our three long distance away trips. Point please.

Indeed, you can map out the approximate extent of the Danelaw by mapping out place names that end in -by.

As always, we need a win really. Win and we drag Solihull properly into the shite and give our own chances of survival a big boost. If we also win away at Woking that would likely be enough to keep us in this tinpot league rather than an even more tinpot one.

On the subject of home atmospheres, thought Aldershot had the best of all the the places I've been to this year. They'll probably take at least a point on Friday, especially if Wallace starts. Harris is a big loss.

A third straight win, with Tobi Sho-Silva on the scoresheet again, to be the first team to confirm National League status next season. Then only one more game before the turf gets ripped up for next season's 3G.

Literally none of that is factually true, I made pretty much every home game the past five years commuting from York, but it's commonly accepted on here that you're a bit damaged in certain ways, so I'll let you off.

Amazing that one little throwaway comment has caused an entire debate, the beauty of it.

I hope Dover finish us off tomorrow, I really don't want the ignominy of being relegated by a glorified village kickabout team on Monday.

We'll get reffed out tomorrow because the National League doesn't want us here.

Barrow is from a Norse word, so I call bollocks on that statement.

All or nothing for us this weekend. Defeat will FINALLY finish our play-off hopes. Can see us winning, but then being beaten at home by Ferriby on Monday.

I asked the guy who writes that page, and you're right, he just hasn't updated it since you were promoted. Scunthorpe and Grimsby are Danish in origin, along with Derby.

Boreham Wood away, funny club both on and off the pitch. Get beat us 2-0 at home please not again. We need two wins for play offs and then we can rest players at home to Woking.

Probably be our best away crowd turnout this season bar Braintree.

That's not correct in our case as our average is down on last season despite having a far better manager, better players and a more attractive style of football. I think a lot of that may be down to the owner's decision to charge a £2 "pay on the day" surcharge.

I agree that's a factor, the games shunted to midweek due to our progress in the FA Trophy have also dented the numbers through the turnstiles

I've done the maths, you already are SAFE (with Boreham Wood), congrats

big weekend for us - we need to win at Bromley and hope Tranny beat Aldershot and then for Aldershot (or anyone else) to beat Dover. Then wins in the last 3 games (including Dover) should put us in the play offs,
Ideally Aldershot beat Dover and Miller gets sent of for violent conduct missing the last 3 games....
