Everything I know about Newport comes from:

Moving on, don't think I'm going to be working this weekend, so might make it my first league game of the season.

Cracking start to the season, Newport on the other hand have grabbed a point against Stevenage and lost their other two. Think I've predicated Newport to get relegated, if I didn't I should have.

I said we'd batter one of Stevenage or Newport and lose the other. So I guess this is our loss. 1-0 Newport, Elito.

I live in Newports twin city.

It sees a bit more sunshine than Newport and not as much rain. Better Chinese grub too, but poor Indian.

No mate, Nanning. For some reason Newport is twinned with a whole province, not a city. Guilin used to be the province capital but they moved it to Nanning as Guilin is too dependent on tourism.

Key to success against Orient this season is going to be by being intense and very physical for the entire 90 minutes because we're not that physically strong or good in the air, but we have taken Barnet and Stevenage to pieces in the last quarter of our respective games once they ran themselves into the ground. Newport have got a very young side, haven't they? Think it might be a struggle for them to be the sort of lump-it thugs that will be bothersome.

Aye. I did see it was twinned with the whole province. Guilin was just a guess/opener! I lived in Yangshuo for a couple of years, teaching English. Never went to Nanning though. You teaching?

If "intense, physical, and diving" works, then I think we could manage that. Alas I will miss our game on the 20th, but oh well.

No mate.I did do, but me and Our Rass have been running a bar/restaurant for four years now.

I'm all Yang Shuo'd out, I've been there four times. Blackpool with Karst mountains now.

Shame.

I went about 15 years ago and stayed in Yangshuo for a couple of weeks to chill out. Or at least that was the plan. Got into a fight with a cormorant fisherman and was pestered all the time in the bar by a sad American bullshitter who implied he was some sort of covert CIA pilot abandoned for knowing too much. Still loved it out there though.

I think I know the American you're on about Mr Womble. Said he was a Navy Seal and used to be in the CIA., which is the last thing anyone from the CIA would ever say.

For your information, if it's the same bloke, he went to Vietnam to get another Chinese visa (you have to leave the country for a temporary visa) and the Chinese embassy fucked him off. I'll remember his name in a bit but I doubt you will.

Vietnam definitely featured in the story. He hung out at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat which was very newly-opened for corporate ex-pats. We booked a couple of days there not realising quite what it was. More than made up for though by hiring a couple of bikes and just heading off around the countryside. Best place we visited in China was a village nearby which still had all the cultural revolution slogans on the walls and seemed to be inhabited exclusively by octogenarians immensely proud to show us round and feed us under a tattered old poster of Mao. I still suspect it was actually all a hallucination. CIA man must have spiked our drinks.

Yeah. His story was that he'd been dropped behind the lines in Vietnam, captured and tortured for five days and then they sent in the Delta Squad to get him out because he was so important.

In reality he was a hashed out old piss artist. He was a laughing stock where I live.

I think you're on about Bama, about an hour from where I am.

Nope, this place was very near Yangshuo and tiny with no facilities for visitors apart from a fridge and toilet in someone's yard. Just checked, and pretty certain from the maps it was Jiuxian. Everyone of working age had left for the cities to see what building work they could get.

Sorry, football fans. Going to shut up now.

I just mentioned your American friend to a couple of old handers here

They knew him straight away. His name is Dick Sterling. It seems he was hounded out of China.

Anyway, up country the only place I know apart from Yang Shuo is Xing 'An.

It will be the same team for the 4th game in a row:

Cisak
Clohessy Essam Baudry Shaw
James
Pritchard Moore
Cox
McCallum Simpson

Subs:
Grainger
Dunne
Ling
Moncur

Palmer
Kashket
Expecting us to take around 500 as its a new ground and we've started well.

We have to drop points at some point and a loss and shock result is due.

We will lose.

I think Pools and Orient have been smiled upon by the fixture God and I see no reason why both shouldn't win tomorrow ..... A lot of tougher games coming very soon

Orient unchanged for the fourth league game in a row. Unprecedented. We'd already used 104 players by this stage last season.

That bench looks super weak.

Planned to head to this, but diddums got a sniffle :(

Means I get the joys of our commentary team, which I'm pretty sure is one of the worst in the country.

Didn't deserve to win that in the end overall. But we should've been out of sight by the time Newport made it 2-2.

After that Newport played really well and shouldn't have lost the game, our extra quality narrowly came through. Our midfield worked tirelessly to grind the win out in the end.

Good game today. Deserved a draw. Thought Orient were quality for first 30 mins - could've scored 5. After that we were the better team and played some good stuff. Bottom line is we can't afford to gift teams like Orient a 2 goal head start. Plymouth away next Sat will complete a tough August for us - more chance of getting some points in Sept especially with a few of the injured grown ups returning. Still confident we will be mid tableish come next May.
