I saw 'Happy St George's Day' cards in a shop last week. Has anyone ever bought one?

I've had tonight ear-marked for a couple of pints of English ale since St. Patrick's day when I didn't go out and drink Guinness.

Now it's here though, not sure I can be arsed.

Is it national pride, or just St George's Day itself you don't like?

If you want to celebrate national pride you shouldn't need an arbitrary day to do it.

I'm honestly not sure what people think they're celebrating to be honest. It just seems to be a day where borderline racists have a free pass to post what they like in the name of national pride.

You could say that about pretty much anything though. Why bother setting Christmas Day aside? Red Nose Day? Any other 'day' on the calendar? It's a tad arbitrary but I don't see St Georges Day as anything other than a day set aside to take a bit of pride in your country. Call it what you want, so long as we have it. I think it sad that St Patricks Day is more of a thing in England than our own patron saint. National pride and patriotism is often a vehicle for racists to spout their shit, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't still have it. We're a country holding one of the oldest and richest historys, heritage, traditions, cultures in the world and if you can't find even a pinch of pride in that, well, I find it a bit sad.

Someone on my fb posted "happy UKIP day" (hes a massive liberal so was a dig at the St Georges day comments as opposed to actually liking UKIP).

Comments like his really piss me off. I hate the Britain First stuff that I see posted and ain't no fan of UKIP but why has the national day suddenly become racist? Its stuff like that that makes people even more racist!

Does someone want to tell the Irish that they're racist for going out on St Patricks day? Does anyone think they are? Highly doubt it. Just because some people use national pride as a way of expressing their racism doesn't mean you shouldn't be patriotic.

To be fair to the Irish at least their patron saint was Irish.

Actually having checked seems he was British. :brill:

It's the same each year, people maoning about how the English don't celebrate St Georges day, the answer is of course we do, but people seem to want the same sort of celebartion that St patricks day gets....why? Those morons dressed up in the union jack singing patroic songs just look stupid, that's not what England is about, the vast majority of us are far too classy for all that.:cool1:

I think it's because a sense of English superiority, however it manifests, is still being culturally reproduced from way back in time, which you don't get from other countries. It shouldn't really be like that. The problem is when the likes of the EDL, BNP, Britian First etc try to highack the flags and how people feel inhibited to celebrate English culture because of that.

It ain't that, its the people on facebook saying its racist, or you have to be a UKIP supporter etc. if you associate yourself in any way with St Georges day. As if it should just cease to exist. Its left-wing taken to the extreme.

Like the Rooney rule in football. Anti-racism has come on a huge way in football (way more than homophobia for example) but they still want to push it to extremes that in turn will only push it the other way.

Totally, its the radicals trying to hijack something and then the liberals letting them do it and insinuating anything 'in between' is one of the radicals. Its ridiculous.

I think there has started to be a turn in the tide and a 'reclaiming' of the St. George's cross recently. Certainly today in Norwich there are more English flags than I have ever seen up in non-World Cup time (which is still only about 5 but there is usually none). I've mentioned in other threads both on here and TFF over the time of my dislike of nationalism but I do think that. whilst there are plenty of overlaps, there is a difference between patriotism and national pride and nationalism, and a lot of people fail to see this difference. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong from having a day where you can go 'we may not be perfect but as a country we get a lot of things right'. In fact I think it would probably be a good thing if we did occasionally focus on what we do right instead of what we do wrong.

Yeah, the people on FB saying it's racist etc are part of the problem, but people who want to celebrate the positive aspects of England and English culture shouldn't be put off from celebrating because of that narrative.

Personally I'm indifferent about it all. I'm not very nationalistic, but I've no problem with others celebrating in a positive way.

I've never seen anyone say celebrating it is racist. What I do see is the day being an excuse for racists to have a platform to spout their bile.

I just do not understand any of the national days. They're pointless as far as I'm concerned.

Do racists need an excuse to spout? They're usually pretty forthright with it.

I have seen people on my facebook saying that is is racist, or similar.

Youd didn't get the memo?

Black people are alright now, we aren't racist, but we don't like browns or eastern europeans

You can't even have a St. Georges Day without someone saying they can't have a St Georges Day without being called racist.

We don't really do anything up here when it's St. Andrews Day tbh. Its just a day with a name, like World Aids Day or something.

Really? I thought you guys did do stuff on St Andrews day. You ought to do something like we do down here. Get into pointless discussions about whether or not the whole day is a racist event for example. It's great.
