What a season, when the old site died that a few of us migrated here from, I thought I was done with football talk on tut internet, I use twitter but don't really get involved in football talk as it's far too tribal on there, however finding this site and following the league this year has been an incredibly exciting season. Congratulations to those promoted and in the playoffs, there isn't a team that is in the playoffs that I begrudge being there, and not a fan of those clubs that I don't wish well. Commiseration's to the strugglers and those going the wrong way. It may not feel like it, but it will get better. Being a Wolves fan and a follower of my home town team Corby Town I have seen some crappy seasons, I have seen or been around for both being close to going out of business and seen both rise from that (Corby more than once). I had the fortune of being involved in the youth team for Corby when it was first set up and we used to have to train on a field next to the ground when the athletics club were meeting as we needed to use a 40ft/30ft of space that got lit by the overthrow of one of the floodlights as the club was broke and couldn't afford for pay for us to train anywhere with floodlights. I wasn't really good enough for the standard but I loved that club and spent most of my childhood following them so was desperate to be involved and as I was the 2nd keeper the manager kept me involved purely for numbers reasons.

The English Div 2 from that year (96/97) featured Wigan, Fulham, Swansea, Cardiff, Hull. Other than Fulham I would never have tipped any of those lot for ever being in the prem as a 15 or16 year old (I think that's right, it seems a long time ago now!) Football has it's mainstays in every league, but it is no where near as closed a shop as you think and possibilities are there even in todays game, the proof of that is that I have seen Fleetwood, Burton, Yeovil, Crawley and Stevenage rise from a standard that I know or have played with loads of lads that once made it to that level or still play in the Conference North/South or below, knowing a few purely through working with them during the week which brings home the reality of where those clubs came from.

the only thing in football you can truly close off, is your mind. Stay positive. Football without hope isn't football if you ask me!

Top post mate.

Been a great season, especially from the Championship perspective. It's hard to take that we missed out on the playoffs by 4 goals after getting 78 points, but like you say credit to the other teams who did make it, can't begrudge any of them at all and it's much deserved. The football league is the most exciting and entertaining set of divisions in the world for me, and I wouldn't change a thing for all the quality that the PL, La Liga, Bundasliga, etc has to offer.

Totally agree with that. History, Tradition, Passion that cannot be found anywhere on the same scale that we have here.

Excellent post fella, I guess we are similar in age too.

Your comments about clubs grafting their way through the leagues is the reason I cannot accept MK Dons as they never were at the bottom rung and earning their way up, they just bought a place in the league, begrudging another club of that right.

I am with you on MK dons Walkley, I don't mind the MK fans on here if I am honest, but I have seen a few who refer to MK v Wimbledon as a rival match. It isn't a rival match, it's like having to go to court to give evidence against someone who robbed your house, only for them to turn up in one of your suits and wearing your granddad's WW1 Medals! The easily could have grafted to get to where they are, think about the original Wimbledon, Rushden Diamonds after their merger, Fleetwood, FC United, not sure where they are now but Halifax I would include as they were a rebuild.

The Wimbledon fans treated it as a rival match, to be fair.

No, they treated it as a game against a club who stole their livelihood and hard earned league status.

They claimed the way they would do that was to boycott and not put any money into Wankerman's pocket. Then nigh on 3,000 of them turned up making it a nice pay-day for him. I'm not saying I blame them, I'd want to go and cause mayhem in their situation too, but to say the MK Dons fans made it into a rivalry is one-eyed.

A lot of us say we would boycott but we still turn up to watch OUR team not the club stealing bastards.

I'd piss myself if they went bust.

It's been a pretty mental season as far as they go but I'm glad it over, exhausted from football if I'm honest. A well needed break and a summer free of a major tournament is just what I need. Sure I'll be itching to go again come August.

And I'd piss myself if Blackpool went bust. Both are equally unlikely.
You wouldn't though, let's be fucking honest, you need Blackpool, like we need Sheffield United, football without rivalry is meaningless, you'd like Blackpool to suffer, long stints in the lower echelons of the league but nowt more.

I derive more pleasure watching Sheffield United languish in the third tier than I would them going out of existence, why? Because we have a healthy rivalry and over 125 years of history as opponents, I know plenty of Blades and wouldn't wish them losing their club.
