I was just watching this video on Youtube after wondering what the origins of the 'how can she slap?!' meme are...

It's quite sad and a little funny at the same time, but what I was wondering is, what are peoples opinions on a guy retaliating to being hit by a woman, by hitting her back? A total no-no, or a case of 'well if she's big enough to hand them out..'? Go.

there was a thread on tff that followed a similar vein and it didn't end well haha
Was that because Rich McClean had a harem of women he used for his own personal punch bags?

Nah, an unnamed member condoned hitting women (it was later revealed to be a joke "haha very funny amirite") but it ended in a massive argument

We were out one night recently and some pissed up tart walked up to my mate and belted him around the head with a Budweiser bottle causing plenty of damage. The correct reaction in this case was to spark her the fuck out. It depends on the severity of initial assault, if it's a gentle tap with an open hand then no reaction is appropriate. If it's some 16 stone harridan in full-on attack mode, different steps are needed, but in no case is it ever correct for a man to strike the first blow. All about context.

Some people just need smacking whether they be male or female. Every person in all of the above videos deserved one. That on the Subway was insane though, Mind you she held her own!

I think that's from a gameshow where the woman is a character trying to literally wind them up - so in that context, he's a prick.

In general though, it's a self-defence thing, there's plenty of videos I've seen where a bloke would be perfectly within his rights to defend himself and punch the girl or at least forcibly restrain them, some girls seem to think they're untouchable with it. It completely depends on the context though i.e. size difference, level of threat.

If you're in imminent danger you are within your rights to respond proportionally to the threat posed, their gender shouldn't even be relevant, I don't fancy being stabbed to death because the person clutching the sharp object happens to have a vagina.

If a woman is being physically violent towards a man, why shouldn't the man retaliate?! Are they supposed to let it happen?

If a woman assaulted me, she'd get it back in self defence. Same as if a man did it to me. Why does gender matter in this situation?

If a woman verbally abused you, you'd do it back so I don't see any difference here.

Interesting discussion.

I slapped a significant other because he was particularly obnoxious. I shouldn't have done so but his response was to punch me in the face at least twice leaving me with cuts, bruises and one less tooth. Being much stronger than me, he was able to inflict those injuries.

Yes, I was at fault to start with but he went too far. Self control on both sides would have led to a different outcome.

I have seen far too many world star video's and similar where girls/women act like absolute scum, hitting, spitting, kicking etc, relying on the defence or knowledge that there is such a social stigma around men hitting girls. In many of them, people stand back and watch whilst girls slap guys around, but if the guy retaliates in any manner, he is immediately pulled away.

e.g.
or

It is endemic of the general attitude towards female vs male domestic abuse. As shown in the video, many see men being abused as funny. This is further proved here:

I am no fan of Jeremy Kyle by any stretch but he makes a very very valid point. There is such a huge social stigma surrounding domestic abuse in which men are the victim.

Double standards in this are ridiculous. You should never act in my view in a disproportionate approach to a man or woman: if someone hits you then sure, respond in a way which defends yourself and prevents any further injury but nothing more.

I'm with you guys, sorry, but it's all about these equal rights and stuff, personally, if a bloke smacked me one, I'd be giving him one back, and I don't see why a woman should be any different. Obviously as stated above, all comes down to restraint and to remember that you are probably bigger and stronger than her, so no I don't advocate them smacking you and you break her jaw for it. But by that same measure, I wouldn't advocate a bloke doing that to another bloke.

Equal rights for me, men get abused by women nearly as much as women by men, but women will get away with it due to the social stigma of it. For instance if my missus came in here now and started smacking me about and I retaliated by smacking her one back to defend myself, I'd be the one in court getting done for assault. Not her.

MorDon is right, the numbers of domestic abuse are fairly even between the genders according to recent studies, the variables come in the forms it takes which in some categories men outweigh women significantly in terms of being the victim (primarily emotional abuse iirc). Study is http://www.cdc.gov/ViolencePrevention/pdf/NISVS_Report2010-a.pdf if you're interested.

This is of course a wider problem of men not liking to discuss their problems, there is a stigma attached to the "battered man" and opening up, which I am sure is attached to the high suicide rights amongst them too. Nobody wants to say their wife/girlfriend is abusive to them because they feel they'll be made fun of, people will laugh and mock men who are victims (victim blaming anyone?) because you're meant to be strong enough to handle a woman.

I've always been brought by the notion that you shouldn't hit a woman.

I'd probably go for a Stone Cold Stunner instead

I really hope you're not talking bout me because there were about two replies to that post, there wasn't outrage or a massive argument and we discussed this via PM... if it's not me you're talking about then apologies.

My opinion on the topic at hand is pretty straightforward, I don't really like feeling physical pain whether than be from a bloke or a female so I'll react the same way with either should the circumstances determine so.
