Arrogant Smat notable for his silence. Scared? Hard to conclude otherwise.

So you can foul someone for a penalty and it's no longer a straight red but if you handball it it's a straight red still?

Likely a bad refereeing decision.

It looked like he was pulling his arm away too.

I expect that sending off killed the game (totally dependant now on the team with the extra player messing it up). Football's better 11 v 11 anyway.

It's only a yellow if deemed accidental. Handballs are by definition within the rules never accidental.

Therefore red and penalty is the correct decion. Which is also the common sence outcome as well, otherwise you might as well pull a Suarez everytime.

Handballs from close range aren't always deliberate, it's not easy to get the arm out of the way. Giving a penalty and a sending off can pretty much end a game, not good for entertainment purposes.

In this game anyway I thought Phelan had the team sit back right to the penalty area only challenging Arsenal at the edge of it, not a good idea and it gave Arsenal a head start. After the sending off I thought it was over. Apparently later on the referee could have sent an Arsenal player or two off (the goalkeeper and someone else on a yellow), but of course that didn't happen.
