An interesting bit of data has come out on how cost effective goalkeepers were in the Champions League last season, and Maribor goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic has come out on top.
The Slovenian was instrumental in ensuring the minnows secured three draws in their group. Maribor memorably held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw, thanks to Handanovic’s late penalty save from Eden Hazard.
Handanovic made a remarkable 37 saves in just six games last season, averaging out at a save every 14.59 minutes. Taking into account his salary, Handanovic cost has club just £703 per save. Although this wasn’t enough to see his side through or into the Europa League, it did earn Maribor a tidy £350,000 for each draw.
The data comes from savings and investment firm Scottish Friendly and the award is the Super Saver Cup, which celebrates the skill and cost effectiveness offered by goalkeepers last season in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Unsurprisingly the players at the big clubs, such as Petr Čech and Manuel Neuer, represented the least value for money, due in part to their incredibly high wages.
If you want to have a look at all the stats and compare other goalkeepers, they can all be found at Scottish Friendly's website
