Not management but Head of Recruitment (or whatever title your club gives it). Our Head of Recruitment, Mark Thomas has turned Pompey down to stay with us. According to our local rag, those in similar positions at Forest Green and Cambridge have also turned Pompey down.

They’ve really not covered themselves in glory to be publicly rejected three times!
True, it's getting a little embarrassing now. I think it's a case of these guys initially thinking "Portsmouth? They're quite a big club aren't they?" And then coming down and looking at our budget, training facilities, youth setup, scouting etc and thinking "Errr.... maybe not".

We're suffering for decades of neglect towards the basic facilities and infrastructure of the club. The current owners are trying to rectify this but it's slow going, with plenty of mis-steps and we have a long way to catch up on other clubs.

I like Phil Brown as a pundit on the radio, easy to listen to and seems to know what he is talking about...not sure I would want him in charge of my team though!

Tbf it worked for Barrow. Not so much for Southend though.

This is only coming from one Talksport journalist so far, but it seems that Liam Manning is leaning towards turning QPR down to stay here. Obviously there are two other Championship clubs with vacancies that would probably do well with him, but QPR was the main one I was worried about so that's good news.

He’s a good coach and really improved some of our players as individuals and the football is unarguably lovely to watch most of the time, but we’re not very good away from home, a bit of a shambles without the ball and laughably bad at trying to hold onto a lead.

That sounds exactly the style of play that would suit us…

Pretty sure we’ll do things the right way though and you’ll get decent compensation in any case, if he decides to come after you’ve finished your playoffs. Tbh if you win them I doubt he’ll come here anyway.

I swear you used to rate him mate?

I told you he was another Rusk.

Hopefully Forest Green do you a massive favour, you may even get lucky and have someone actually pay for him. We had to pay Rusk off.

Get Wrexham up because if they don't they'll walk the auto spot, get yourself a decent manager and you'll be out next year.

Good coach, shit manager. He should be sacked, so a team paying us £££ would be a right bonus.

Is he a good coach though? Your back three/five were so flat tonight and your midfielders ended up so deep as a result. It was genuinley a Rusk tribute act. Gave me the jitters. I wanted you to win. I knew Grimsby were going to knick it, Burchnall looked like a lost dog on the sideline.

Burchnall 1/3 on now. Gotta say Notts fans aren’t filling me with confidence, given we could well be in a relegation battle we’ll need a bit of steel do his teams have that?

Christ no. Burchnall’s Notts have got less steel than the team that got relegated out of the league.

Ben Garner off to Charlton apparently. Compensation sorted. So add us to the list on the hunt for a new manager.

I do love how when a manager/coach is shite somewhere, that automatically means he's going to be dreadful everywhere. Even though recent evidence is completely to the contrary (leading Swindon to the playoffs).

And I'm just as guilty, I think Martin Allen is a disaster zone, but he won a league title with Gillingham and we all know of his record at Barnet.

Interesting one. First of all I can completely see why Garner would be enticed by Charlton, decent sized London club in a higher division. You can see from Ipswich and Franchise that the dynamic exciting young coach seems to be on trend. Based on the season just finished Garner and Chorley did well to get a side that had been predicted to struggle into the play-offs. In the end Darryl Clarke did a number on him and we flunked our penalties.

He likes to play a possession based game, we started the season with 3 CBs which was a triumph away but turgid at home. He switched this and started to mix it up with big Josh Davison up front and we started to get more success at home. In the end our lack of squad cost us, loans were recalled in January and whilst the replacements were good, most of them got injured and it ultimately cost us dearly.

I think he might do quite well at Charlton they have a nice big pitch (I think I'm right in saying) and he'll play an open, expansive game. My main fear is if he tries to also take Jack Payne and Manny Egbo (RB) with him as well as attempt to sign Loius Reed as they were fantastic for us last season. At least we have time to replace Garner.

Some fans are now claiming they’ve spoken to our owner on LinkedIN and he’s saying reports are wrong

Wait and see I guess.

Interesting. There are new manager odds for our job on BetVictor if that is worth anything?

For Forest Green - the general consensus seems to be that's he's underachieved given the size of budget and quality of players he's had to work with at Notts County.

He appears to be a very intelligent and well qualified coach, but I'd have reservations about how good of a 'manager' he is in terms of motivating and inspiring players.

Got some concerns given Notts fans seem to be saying they were a bit of a soft touch under him, but maybe his playing out from the back style might be better suited to league 1?

He looks delighted btw

Maybe, although the flip side is that he was working with probably the most technical proficient squad in the division here, which I’m guessing is unlikely to be the case with you guys.

It’s not all bad, for one he seems a genuinely nice bloke and on that front I wish him all the best. We were also a joy to watch for most of the season at home, where his style of football worked on our nice, big pitch and we gave some of the smaller sides an absolute hiding. He’s also left us with some big money assets like Rodrigues who have come on hugely thanks to his coaching.

The flipside is that our away performances were largely bad and the results not much better, we leaked goals and absolutely folded in basically every big game/moment all season. We regularly lost games that we were winning with 15/20 mins to go.

It’s a different job with different pressures, I’m assuming anything other than relegation is a success rather than anything other than promotion being a failure, and maybe that will suit him better. But unless he can sort the basic stuff out, winning second balls, grinding out results, defending set pieces, holding onto leads etc, then he’s not going to make it as a manager at any level over here and all of the nice coaching and pretty football will be for nothing.

I'm happy, uphill job whoever got it and might as well struggle with style.
Sounds like Notts County were exactly opposite to us last season, at least in the first two-thirds of the campaign, where at times we struggled at home but were amazing away. If we can achieve the best of both Worlds then we should have enough to stay up...if not, it could be a speedy return to League Two with a really low points score!

The fact that he appears to have been selected as the manager the club wanted, and approached directly, is good enough for me.

Yep, decent bloke and good coach also big plus points for me. I wasn't overly fussed about league football, much as it's lovely once you're in, so definitely not scared of a league one survival fight.

Absolute blagger and clearly a proper snake aswell.

Forest Green will or would go straight back down with Burchnall. But he'll be gone by Christmas.

A well coached side that plays decent football should be able to get 12-15 wins over a season you would think, it’s not like being a promotion contender where you need to be able to grind out win after win.

So even if his style does have it’s flaws exposed by some teams it probably won’t be a big issue as the pressure won’t be the same to win every week, unlike at Notts. Average just under 1 win in 3 and we should stay up.
