Pompey are 50/1 to get relegated!? Think I’ll be chucking a few notes on that at that price.

Some of our fans have already done that! We'll be in a relegation battle if we lose to Exeter on Saturday.

I was hoping Mous would be our next manager. He's a very bright bloke, speaks very well, has been on the coaching side with us for the last two or three years, got all his coaching badges (did them on the same course as the Cowleys ironically), has been captain at every club he's played for (so is a leader) and is Chairman of the PFA. I imagine he'll give up the PFA role if this is true.

Don't under estimate him.

Hope you're right. At the end of the day this is still his first head coach role so it is a massive gamble.

Hopefully he's well aware that he's walking into a fairly hostile environment at the moment. There are "lack of ambition" protests planned for this weekend, and this appointment is unlikely to deter them.

Personally, I'll get behind Mousinho and I'm guessing the majority will. However, if results and performances don't improve quickly then things could get ugly fast. Not sure he could have chosen a tougher first job!

He needs a couple of quick wins to silence the unrest in the stands.

Can't help but feel though that he'll always be just a few consecutive defeats away from a negative crowd reaction.

Worst case, if he can't halt the present decline then i can't see him surviving the season and we'll be back to square one in the summer (possibly in league two).

Good luck to the guy and i hope he is a success and is given an easy ride. I like the forward thinking approach probably due to the Hughes involvement, but i do wonder if this is as much to do with him being cheap as it is to do with his football credentials.

I'll be intrigued to see what happens now in the remainder of the transfer window, and the calibre of player we will be looking to recruit.

What makes you think he'd be cheap? We don't exactly pay our players in buttons? As he's still under contract to us, as a player, there may be some sort of compensation to negotiate too.

He wont be on the same kind of wedge that a Wilder or Manning would likely command and the compensation for him with be a few grand compared to say DC on 4.5 years left on a deal or someone on a contract with England like they were linked to.

As someone with zero experience, he would unquestionably have commanded the least wage out of any of the other candidates (all already in or having been in managerial roles). He is a 5th choice league one centre half. I doubt he currently earns more than £2k a week.

You think he'd take the Portsmouth managers job for £100k a year? Think again.

How much would he take it for then out of interest?
He'll know what a job like that pays, and will expect the going rate. Our manager was on something like £250k per annum, not sure what it is now, so I'd imagine yours would be similar?

Through his work as PFA Chairman he'll have a very good appreciation of salaries across many clubs, and won't sell himself short, he doesn't need to.

He may have to sell himself short for his first job but I'd expect he would want parity with the clubs highest paid players.

He probably would… it’s a first job so wouldn’t likely command the same as an experienced manager. Same in most jobs in daily life. Get on the ladder if he does well in his first role then command a bigger wage.

Imagine the opportunity to manage would be the biggest pull. Interesting to see how this one pans out. It’s a huge job but Ipswich and Plymouth have made it work in a similar situation.

He hasn't earned the right to expect the same salary as an experienced manager. In footballer terms it would be like a youth team player breaking in to the first team and demanding parity with the star strikers wages.

My guess is about £125-150k a year.

If he starts to get success i'm sure we'll offer him improved terms otherwise he'd leave as soon as someone else was offering a better deal.

Whatever it is, it'll be cheap as that's what we do.

Ian Evatt now has shares in the club it been announced. So it means he is going nowhere anytime soon. Now that is investing in your manager.

He's invested in Bolton if he's got shares....Ian Holloway did similar at Grimsby didn't he?

Think he was allocated B shares as part of his contract. Unsure if he’s invested tbh. We were approached by 2 championship clubs (including his old club Blackpool) in the summer and he knocked them back. Possibly one of the reasons why

I was joking.....when someone has shares they're classed as an investor.

Yeah I know I understand (when I left uni my first job was as a trader …trading stocks/shares/commodities/FX etc.) but you can still purchase B shares. So I’ve literally no idea whether they were all awarded in his contract or not? I can only see the confirmation statement on companies house.

Looking from the outside, surely the Portsmouth job is a massive opportunity and one which a confident young manager chomping at the bit for his first big break would find almost impossible to turn down regardless of the money.

That's a fair point, regarding wanting parity with the higher paid players.

Our higher paid players earn substantially more than £250,000, and I believe Portsmouth's budget is slightly lower than ours, but I don't see £100,000 cutting it, no way. There will be managers in League Two earning more than that, and I know of one recent National League manager, at a fairly small club (not an ex EFL club) who earned a lot more than that.

My point remains. Why would an intelligent, well informed person, who's currently in a well paid job, and is supposedly Portsmouth's No 1 choice, sell himself that short? He doesn't need to.

Although I've quoted you Barrie, my reply is as much to the Portsmouth fans, it's just that you made the point about parity with the higher paid players, and I can't be arsed to write three separate replies!

Mousinho confirmed on a long-term contract.

Still surprised at the appointment but will give him my full support. If it doesn't work out then the owners, CEO and Sporting Director will have a lot to answer for.

I believe at 36 we must have one of the youngest managers in the EFL now?

Out of left field appointment. Get his backroom team experienced and could be a decent manager. Oxford scored 2nd highest amount of set pieces which he's in charge of

The change has been happening for a while now but there's a definite shift in profile that Clubs are starting to look for - Brown, Kennedy, McKenna, Manning, Jackson, Holden, Schumacher and now Mousinho.

A big thing with younger coach types is getting some experience around you.

At least it's finally sorted. Drifting aimlessly has been pretty depressing.

Not really interested in what salary he's on to be honest. Time to get behind the new guy, and I really hope we're not back on here in November with "Pompey part company with Mousinho after disappointing start to the season".

Are you gutted by having made this massive concession, Portsmouth fans?

https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/sport/...ign-oxford-united-players-john-mousinho-deal/
No why would we be? Oxford aren't actually tearing up the league are they.
I hear Mr Robinson isn't started to be asked questions of.

I dont get it. Have a look at the link. Sheff Wed are the biggest club and seem to pay the biggest wages then Plymouth. Derby and Ipswich are up there. What gets me is how can Fleetwood pay a player 10 grand and Oxford with the gates they get.
