Colin Murray was key in the success and popularity of Quest's coverage, as mentioned he researched and cared about who he was talking about, understood what its like to 'only' support a lower league (small) football club. I hope ITV have read the room and not turn it into some ex prem player 'where are they now' 'banter' fest.

Suppose on a related point we should all be grateful to Rooney today for sparing us from the sum total of their L1 coverage being about “Wayne Rooneys Derby County”.
Don't be too sure about that.
Instead it will be "Scholes and Nevilles Salford City"?
(Or do BBC Manchester have that monopoly)

Colin Murray was great on quest. Got our fans onside by referring to us Argyle not Plymouth. Sure he did similar things for other clubs.

The best, or at least funniest, football highlights programme was Danny Baker’s The Game on LWT about 30 years ago. It was a highlight show of Sunday morning football in east London. Baker and an ‘expert‘ summariser were sat on some scaffolding boards on Hackney Marshes commenting on a game. It broadcast, I think, on a Friday night so we used to watch when we got home from the pub. Think it is still available on YouTube. Worth a watch - nothing like any other football show!

When was that ‘late kick off’ show on the Beeb? Used to do a weekly regional show with lots of info and colour pieces for all the regions clubs. I enjoyed that.

All 6 episodes are still on Youtube, I agree it's a fantastic watch, if only to see the teams taking buses to the cup final.

I'm not sure he's bothered by them. He's happy doing what he does - he's got his 5 Live show, Fighting Talk, the snooker on Eurosport and his column in the Metro.

He's big on morals as well. This is a guy who left his mid-morning show on Talksport the moment The Sun took over the station.

I didn't like Murray much when he was at Radio 1, but I used to listen to Fighting Talk religiously until about 3/4 years ago and I really wamed to him after he took the hosting role on there. His other big BBC podcast, Blood on the Tracks, was also brilliant.
He played a big part in the reformation of Chester FC in 2010 and also in about 2016 when the club under Jon McCarthy was close to going under again. He arranged an all star game in which the likes of Michael Owen and his father Terry (ex Chester player) took part. Love Colin.

Agree, I was never big on Murray but I do really like him on the radio. He's also the new host of Countdown I think so has plenty going on.

My favourite memory of Quest was where, "...it's now time for a local derby, as Hereford made the short trip to Lincoln".

That's a bit before my time, but I remember the Sunday afternoon games on ITV in the mid-90s. One game that always stuck out was Port Vale's 4-4 draw with QPR. One of them, I forget which, was 4-0 going into the last 10 mins before the other dragged it back. Absolutely epic game.

Edit - found the game on Youtube:

Yeah we try not to speak of that game too much. Fucking Jermaine Holwyn…!!

If memory serves me right we had a perfectly good fifth chalked off as well before they pulled it back.

That sounds very Setanta to me, as both teams were probably in the Conference...they thought it would be a good idea to screen a game between us and Crawley on a Sunday evening, then delayed kick-off because the programme before was over-running!

Anyone remember ITV Digital? MONKEY! I know it was doomed and my memories were that I could never get a proper reception on my digibox, but at least they had the great idea of splitting the shows three ways, so you knew exactly when your division was on.

But I don't get ITV London :)

Seems pretty pointless to repeat it on ITV1, I can't imagine anyone desperately tuning in at 11:15 (unless you've just arrived back from Morecambe and you forget to record it on ITV4 so you can skip the adverts).

Edit: I forgot about people coming back from the pub. That was me once :-(

That Monkey relegated Grimsby!

not the fact they were paying some Random Chinese international a fortune whilst ITV Digital defaulted on their Payments.

I thought I was the only person who had ITV Digital. I loved their Sports channel, which was basically the Football League channel.

A friend did - said it was good but obviously no one had it !

Remember playing Preston on a Thursday night in a live game -‘probably an example of why it failed.

Who’d pay to watch that !

If I remember correctly, it was only a fiver a month, so not really break the bank.

They had that awful game show as well, with fans representing their clubs in a quiz. Cheltenham's were dreadful, but apparently it was little more than a glorified piss-up.

Was it channel 5 that tried loads of weird ideas on their debut show and it absolutely flopped. The games were all jumbled in order between the divisions and there was some weird board they showed the league table on or something along those lines. Scrapped loads of them by week 2 or 3.

I would definitely be in favour of non-championship sides being given more extensive highlights, even if that meant they were shown at the beginning rather than the end. A match between the top two in League One or Two is surely of more interest than 10th v 15th in the Championship.

Yeah, they tried showing the two Sheffield clubs at the same time even though they were in different divisions on one show, and they had fans to talk about their teams.

The thing is, none of us are bothered about a Burton's fans hopes for the season, or a Sheffield Utd fan thinking they can piss the League. We want to see the goals, the important moments (such as red cards, or flare ups) and have the proper pundits pretending they know what's going on in the bottom tier for 30 secs after a round up.

The collapse of ITV Digital was instrumental in us winning the Championship the following season.

Many clubs had budgeted for the TV money that never came. Harry Redknapp took us over, immediately sold Peter Crouch for £5M to Aston Villa and used the money to put together a good squad while other clubs tightened their belts. Paul Merson, Matt Taylor, Tim Sherwood and Svetoslav Todorov came in and propelled us to the Prem.

It was a sliding doors moment and we've never looked back from our lofty perch...... oh right....

Was definitely L2, it was our first home game after Keith Alexander passed away and we had Martin Peters there with the World Cup because it was on it's tour (weird how you remember these things!).
