Strong rumours that all the most serious charges have been kicked into touch and just a few slurs and team selection calls to be decided.

Team selection is bloody ridiculous (our team on Saturday was all his players bar two). How on Earth do you prove/disprove why one player was picked over another.

So all the Crawley players that complained to the PFA, are we saying they're liars?

A lot of the complaints were absolute crap from the start...segregated dressing room. 6'4 Joel Lynch standing for that? Even the assistant manager, Lewis Young (a black man who was promoted by Yems) said he wouldn't of stood for it.

I very much doubt if they will find anyone completely blameless as it would mean saying someone is lying and that opens the fa up to defamation charges.

Reported in The Daily Mail 18th November.

An independent FA panel has begun hearing the case against manager John Yems, who has been charged with 16 counts of racial discrimination towards his own players at Crawley.

This under an article about Jordan Henderson complaining it took three weeks to get his case heard.

Maybe the FA should consider bringing the team home from qatar.

Show the world how much they really care about discrimination, Won,t happen though.

Yems has been suspended by the fa until June 1st 2024

The former manager of Crawley Town FC was charged with 16 alleged comments in breach of FA Rule E3.2 during the period between 2019 and 2022. It was alleged that each breach amounts to an “aggravated breach” of FA Rule E3.2 as the comments included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief and/or gender.

He has been suspended for cracking jokes in the workplace. The charges that he discriminated against players due to ethnicity/race were dismissed.

I'm told the full report makes it clear that the FA doesn't think Yems is a racist but has found that he used 'old fashioned language'. A two year ban for cracking jokes and banter is bloody harsh but as he was the boss he shouldn't be cracking jokes at his employees expense.

I agree with your last sentence Casey. From what I've been told by someone who witnessed some comments, he should have known better.

A dinosaur in other words. Sorry but that is not an excuse. I'm three years younger than him and went to a South London comprehensive. You learn what is and isn't acceptable. I was raised by well meaning non racist parents who made it clear that calling people black wasn't acceptable but terminology evolves. I worked with a black woman in the early 80's who made it clear that it was how she identified.

In my customer service role it's my job to keep up with racial terminology and anyone in managing people should keep up with current trends. Yems can FRO.

Meadow; I agree and disagree. For a start all the serious charges were thrown out and the fa has said in the full report that Yems did not discriminate on race or colour or ethnicity.

I too went to a rough schools (and some good) in London, Romford, Basildon and Crawley (and I didn't reach the end) and I'm the same age range. I've heard and seen the same stuff as he and you have. It was a different world back then.

So yeah, a dinosaur and imho a manager should not be involved in 'banter' with his employees....however, "don't wear a backpack on the tube. They're think you're a terrorist", "all he ever eats is curry" and "you can't trust his taste in music. He listens to that tinkly Greek stuff" is hardly the worst things you will hear.

A two year ban for stuff such as that is very, very harsh.

In the two PDFs at the bottom of the page.

You've got be pretty thick and ill educated to go around saying those sorts of things anywhere in the world, let alone a working environment. He'll be lucky to work anywhere again and he only has himself to blame.

Absolutely, you might have got away with that in a 70’s working man’s club where everyone was white but it’s bang out of order now.

Deserves his punishment, if there’s anything to complain about it’s too lenient.

Whether Yems has been proven as racist or not, I think one thing that has unequivocally been proven, is that he is a c*nt.

Wow !

People in a lot of industries, particularly in the public eye, have lost their jobs and been pilloried for making any one of those sort of “banter” comments made there. This guy, according to the evidence, apparently did it constantly and relentlessly.

Dinosaur is about the kindest description that seems to fit. And agree he might be lucky to work again.

Statement just now from FA, unhappy with independent panel finding of "no racism" and considering their legal options!

Easy to determine that someone has used racist or discriminatory language. Probably harder from a legal perspective to prove that someone is a conscious racist. They might just be thick as shit and a bit of a c***.

Some of the things he has been found guilty off are ridiculous.

One of the charges upheld was that he took the piss out of a black player's girlfriend at the request of another black player. Another was that he took the piss out of a muslim for not drinking....fair enough except he is teetotal himself. Or how about asking a black player who lives in Peckham if he had been to a certain Jerk Chicken shop in Peckham? Or how about the one where he denied the existence of Allah while at a function also attended by our devout Muslim ceo.

Yems deserved the boot, no doubt, for some of the bullying documented but for the FA not to ask for any of the players who stood up for him to attend the hearing smacks of a kangaroo court. The delay in getting a hearing was terrible and being made to travel home along at night from Mansfield last season was disgraceful.

Repeatedly doing it as well, I can’t be doing with all the whataboutery around it. Read an article earlier which pretty sums up what I think (and I’m interested because he was a coach for us for a while too).

You should be interested as some of the players who may have been involved in the banter are now playing for Gillingham.

Eben (one of our chairman) tweeted that some information had come to light during the Yems investigation that means some senior players will never play for the club again. He has never confirmed exactly who he meant.

I’m afraid it’s not ‘banter’.

And yes I am interested if any of current players were involved and willing to listen if they were.

The banter/repartee/racist bullying is never been alleged to have happened in one on one situations. This means all of the players must have heard it, maybe got involved and crucially did nothing to stop it.

Banter is when it's back and forth between people, each giving and receiving. Imho thats fine. Ive enjoyed a few sessions myself. It becomes bullying and abuse when one of the people involved has to take the "jokes" and doesn't feel able to respond.

The pfa has a rep at each and every club. The players hear reported this through another clubs rep. I'll give you two guess who the pfa rep at Crawley was.

I thought that most of the charges that were deemed to be unproven was precisely because it was one to one.
It is certainly true that lots of people witnessed the behaviour. I'm certainly not suggesting that this issue is limited to Yems, or the 3 players, or even Crawley Town. One has to take the view that this is an endemic problem and ensure that this doesn't happen anywhere from now on.

I don't think that we should just put the spotlight on the specific players who witnessed this behaviour.

However, Casey, I hope you realise that your comments are going to meet with some opposition.
I feel there's some basic principles.
It's not for perpetrators to decide what Racism is.
It's not ok to blame the victims of these offences. The blame lies entirely at the door of Yems, and those who facilitated, ignored and excused it.
I accept that the victims are imperfect, didn't always do the right thing, made mistakes etc. None of that matters.
Using terms like banter doesn't help.
The reality is that it's not easy to stand up for people when you see them being abused. Players are in a vulnerable position if they oppose the manager. It's great if you're the absolute star of the team, or your family aren't relying on you making a decent income from the game. What we're asking of bystanders isn't easy, but nonetheless, it is vital.
I'm sorry that you're taking the position you are. I have more respect for you than the people who defended Yems and are now just staying silent.
Your club is already divided, and this is going to add to the division between sets of fans.
