Speaking of MLS, I really don't get it. What is their obsession with having play-offs at the end of everything? I struggle to follow a sport where you could finish 5th or 6th and still be declared as champions thanks to the end of season play-offs.

Is it purely down to the size of the country and having the east and west leagues?

Probably, but it also keeps things open to the very end of the season. There's upsides and downsides to it. You could be the best side by a country mile and play one bad game in the final and you're buggered. But I still remember when Man Utd won the premier league with months left and it kills the interest for a lot of people. Moreso in a sport where there's no other competitions to be played or relegation or qualification for other sides still to play for.

Champions League? i believe one team won it when they weren't even 3rd best in their own league

Yeah, MLS playoffs are ace. I understand the concerns re: a 5th place side being champions, but if you don't have that school of thought ingrained in your head, playoff formats are incredible. Stanley Cup playoffs (NHL) provide the best entertainment in sports.
