Wembly was fitting cos it was the national teams and we hosted the French.

In the PL? Getting abit Eurocentric imo

I'm not sure why football is always the conduit for 'remembrance'. Whether it's poppies on shirts or minute silences. I don't understand why football has these silences yet cinemas, gigs, theatre doesn't. Would you feel comfortable at work if your manager called all the staff into his/her office to play the La Marseillaise?

The Premier League is a weird beast I don't fully understand so perhaps it's normal to do this. I just find it odd.

Football brings people together is the simple and sappy answer I have for that. Just look at us on here!

I observe silences at work for all sorts of events, I don't see the difference in playing an anthem that provides a different tone.

Football does bring people together. But then again, so does music.... I've found the grief fetish surrounding football odd for quite some time. From poppied shirts, to playing the French national anthem. Just seems excessive. More garish than respectful.

I'm sure it'll provide some nice pictures for the newspapers and highlights packages though.

I'm sure there will be plenty of tribute gigs to this tradegy.

I see your point of view but I understand why there are these marks of remeberance and respect. It's not exclusive to football, but football is a good conduit for it.

You see, the joke was that you often lamblaste the good people of this forum for being "armchair" followers of football. I attempted the ol' switcharoo, turning the tables against you if you will, by using your own thing against you.

is PL going to have national anthem of Mali played next weekend?

Probably not, but then it's not strange that Westerners regard Western lives more important than elsewhere.

What happened in France was an utter tragedy. Not sure why some tragedies are elevated above others though. I guess this is the new top of the Sliding scale of
remembrance

Minutes applause > Minutes silence > 2 Minutes silence > Play the anthem

There's been a long standing narrative that the West is superior to the rest of the world. Africa, the Middle East and Asia have all been dehumanised through mediums and areas of the superstructure for centuries. Subconsciously and, unfortunately, consciously, it's still there.

Yeah cos nothing says 'unity in the face of tragedy' more than division.

You're the "consciously" bit, Toddy. Hope that helps.
i watched a thing about Kenyan men jumping in the air to show how good a shag they were to the women in the village........then he was texting his mate in the next village on a nokia 3210..........thats how i know we are superior.

You're right within the media etc. and that is sad but understandable. However, in such a global league I don't think there's such a need for a 'Paris-centric' focus. Global fanbases, players from all over the world.

Tuesday was appropriate, if nothing else to thank the French for showing up and playing. Perhaps a minute silence for all of the week's tragedies would be better, I don't know. Ironically attending a PL game this afternoon, I really hope there is a minute silence in addition to the anthem, otherwise I fail to understand the point.
