Well lads Simon Grayson has been appointed manager till the end of this season. What are guys thought on this, his CV seems pretty good, 4 promotions with league 1 clubs ?

is that the Simon Grayson who told Bradford (?) while in league 2 that they were getting a Championship manager? Don’t think he hung around long.

Grayson's stock has dropped considerably now. Poor at Bradford, poor at Blackpool second time round, poor at Sunderland.

He'll bore you lot to tears I reckon.

Well thats cheered me up no end, no mention on our website that he was at Bradford although I clearly remember his appt. I texted the guy who sits next to me at Fleetwood about the appt, he rang and was over the moon, I texted my step son who is a PNE fan and he thought it was a good appt. Pilley is playing a canny game, the appt is till the end of the season when every man ( ager ) and his dog will be reviewing the past 12 months and wishing they had done this and not done that

If he does as well as John Sheridan did when he came in about this time he could get the job for another year or two, otherwise.........

Not sure if Grayson is the same man since going to Sunderland, made a lot of money, maybe not got the same motivation.

There were also lots of rumours that he was heavily reliant on Steve Thompson, considering the jobs he's done since leaving and Thompson not following, maybe there is some truth in that.

Not really sure why you wouldn’t want a squad salary cap related to turnover, unless you’re a player.

Seems the bigger clubs wanted to be able to spend as much as they could in the hope they get promoted rather than be restricted.

If it’s related to turnover it’s not much of a restriction?

It wasn't related to turn over though.

Are you sure?

‘At the time of the adoption of the Salary Cap Rules, the EFL included a provision to ensure that any decision such as this would have the effect of reinstating the SCMP rules that were in operation during season 2019/20, which links player related expenditure to turnover.’

Edit - Just to say I’m not certain myself.

That just means that they are reverting to the previous rules for the moment whilst this dispute plays out.

Or that’s how i read the statement.

Yeah reasonably certain. The idea was to have a set cap for all teams in the league. The reactions to the Twitter posting of that article seem to think the same.

Not quite sure what that paragraph means, to be honest the whole article is a headache.

This was aways going to be the outcome IMO. The fact the clubs voted for this without proper consultation with the group most affected by it I.e the players union was very poor to be honest.

In my view the vote was totally knee jerk and hopefully this will lead to a more informed discussion about sustainability than the clubs running off and doing there own thing without proper consultation.

Every single club has broken the % to turnover ratio this season.

I haven't really been paying attention but say fans are allowed back and Sunderland are averaging 30k and someone like Blackpool are averaging 3k, then their allocated wage budget is still the same? In terms of the rules before today's decision anyway.

Yep. A blanket cap if you like.

I think an element of it should be linked to attendances, there's no way Sunderland should be limited to the same maximum as Accrington, but it is absolutely suicidal to not have these caps. These aren't start-up companies, they're community assets as much as they are limited companies, and the salary cap in Rugby Union and most sports in ultra-capitalist United States show that isn't exactly a foreign or exotic concept.

Without it, you'll have more Rushden's spending more than is reasonably sustainable and more Bury's being expelled out the league.

Well, owners if that's what you're implying here, because we didn't see any of the money on the stand which is why it was a scandal in the first place, but as useful as an idea salary caps are I don't see how they'd have stopped Cardoza's mates pocketing a load of public money. Allegedly I should add, as we enter the 6th year of legal proceedings.

As long as the punishments for overspending and going into admin are also suitable increased, then it's worth considering, but this will surely lead to more greedy players, agents and stupid clubs willing to meet inflated demands. It will all end badly for several clubs in L1 within 18 months.

And with the end of salary cap the same wheel keeps on turning.

There has to be a robust mechanism to stop there been another Bury. The SCMP was not robust enough and flouted by many.

It'll be ages until something else in introduced/existing rules tightened up. Ultimately, the PFA want their members earning as much money as they can, they're not going to be in a rush to change anything.

Tbh though, there's going to be a natural lowering of wages etc due to Covid anyway for the next year or two.

On another note, our Chairman has said that the funding to cover gate receipts was 40% less for L1 and L2 than expected.
