The FA Trophy was a significant part of our rise under Steve Cotterill. We fluked up to the Conference in 1997 (we were runners-up, but were promoted because Gresley's ground failed the grading), then were runners-up in 1998 but won the Trophy. This gave us the impetus to win the Conference in 1999.

We also made the semis in 1999 as well, losing to Kingstonian (who went on to beat FGR in the final). Cotterill kept the players on the pitch afterwards and gave them a bollocking in the centre circle. In the week following that defeat we played FGR on the Tuesday and Yeovil on the Thursday knowing we needed 3 points to go up. We drew 1-1 with FGR then beat Yeovil 3-2 to win promotion.

I loved the FA Trophy. Some great memories of trips to Stamford and Billericay, not so much to Grays where we got thrashed.
Ah Billericay!
Sandwiched between our FA Cup games against Man U (a) and Man U (h).
Happy memories.

We got bummed 4-0 at home by North Ferriby one season (when they had all the money) and also lost 3-1 away at Carshalton Athletic after a 0-0 home draw, which still remains one of, if not the, worst match I've ever sat through.

Should have got to the Final the year we got won the league though, got done by a dodgy handball decision in extra time against York.

Didn’t you pip Gloucester in 97? Must have made it that much sweeter. Getting out of that league and then the Conference with only 1 team going up was very tough. Most fans of football league clubs have probably never experienced being in a division where most of the clubs are out of promotion contention by October.

We did - we simply had to match their result to win promotion on the last day of the season. We drew 0-0 away at Burton and they lost 3-1 at home to Salisbury. When they conceded the third goal their fans invaded the pitch to try and get the match abandoned.

The contrasting trajectories of the clubs in the following 25 years is remarkable. They were always heading for trouble though because they massively overspent and the ground was always going to flood.

We lost 5-0 to Histon in the FA Trophy once and we had our first team out. That was a dad moment!

No real disgrace though.
Didn't Cambridge's most under-rated team even beat the massive Leeds United team in the FA,Cup once?

Our accounts for last season are out today and we posted a £2m loss. £7m turnover, £800k spent on infrastructure (£500k of that on a new pitch) and £350k player sales. Board investment is via share purchase rather than loans, and we're relatively debt free aside from some maturing Bonds for the new training ground and the Stacey West expansion. Wages were 90% of turnover, but of course they were full Club wages from CEO to stewards, not the player wage budget.

Not a wonder Appleton was eased out because the Board gave him an extra £800k to spend last season off the back of a 5th place finish playing attractive, attacking football only to guide us to 17th, playing dull and sideways football (caveat that the 5th placed finish was under the salary cap, which levelled the playing field slightly for that season, but still...).

Shows where L1 is financially for the bottom half of L1 when that kinda loss sees you tread water in the league.

I don`t think Cambridge have ever beaten Leeds, are you thinking about Colchester who famously beat mighty Leeds in the early 70s, when Leeds were probably the best team in England?

We've received planning permission today for the Stacey West development i.e. the current away end.

Initially, it was due to start in 2020 and was going to be new office space and facilities for the Lincoln City Foundation with the stand itself getting new concourse areas, hospitality areas and also doubled in capacity but the cost for that ballooned from the initial £2m for obvious reasons.

The revised plans are without the additional seating and hospitality areas but is still costing around the same (£1m of the cost is via grants). Will also trial safe standing in there as well as a block in the home ends with a view of fully rail seating it during the second phase where the hospitality and increased capacity will be added at some point. Other infrastructure bits as well but I'll not bore you with those!

This is the reason we have that bus stop type stand next to the away end because the roof should have been off it by now and you have to provide a certain number of covered seating.

Absolutely crazy as you say. Not doing an awful lot in League 1 and losing money. Thank god for those putting money into the club to deal with the loss. Shows how imperative player sales are to help, and can understand why we went for League 2 players in the summer!

I have been slated for saying teams like Lincoln should consolidate have the odd cup run and beat the big boys every once in a while.....Does not go well but it is exactly what you are doing

Motorbike and sidecar is an odd thing to stick in the car park there.

Not sure about being run right, they are still making big losses every year.
Or does that matter these days?

Most clubs will run at a loss, they've done everything right on their upward rise but now are hitting the buffers a bit.

I don't think anyone from the Lincoln side would say otherwise, although we've not really had value for money on the pitch in 3 of our 4 L1 seasons (in terms of wages paid to players, not the price of season tickets).

One for any Plymouth fans later in the season. Don’t agree with this at all, complete lack of consideration for any travelling fans especially for a reason like this.

We have done exactly the same for the Bolton match at The Mem. His Maj should have really done this on the Sunday in all honesty when there is naff all going on
