Who has a fixture pile up? Nobody in our league. Just invest in a decent pitch
Hardly ideal to play Sat-Tues-Sat for weeks at a time though is it? Very little 'proper' training can be done without a free week

Wycombe not quite buying Reading's training ground yet.

Uh yeah, the deal's off.

Because apparently the planning permission only gives permission for Reading to use it.

Ah well, these things happen!

It's not like we're owned by an American lawyer who claims real estate as one of their specialist areas or anything.

Oh, hang on.

Oh, hang on.

I'm obviously no fan of the ball bag, but in this case the due diligence carried out after they started discussion on purchasing the training facility has unearthed this unworkable clause (from Wycombe's point of view) so if anything his expertise has come into play before parting with any money.

I'm not sure how anyone would've expected him to know before starting discussions/any due diligence was carried out. I could be wrong, but I would imagine it's a technicality that potentially could be written out so I'd guess that's why the official stance is its on hold.

It does make Reading's position (well, Dai Yongge's position) more awkward in the short-term but at least it's likely to tie the asset to the club and keeps the value in real estate rather than cash that would short any debts.

Heck I f they change rules to not play on international weekend in the long term most clubs will only play about 5 Saturday games a season when the madcap fifa gets its way of having 50 odd international games a season.

I usually have zero sympathy for greed ridden players, but something in next 5-6 years will have to change as I cannot at all see players physically coping once these ridiculous champions league and international additions start to kick in plus the season…….even removing both domestic cup games won’t work.

Then they have problems because the greed ridden clubs won’t want to reduce league numbers and risk the TV revenues dropping, they won’t want champions league reducing and thus reducing uefa payments and fifa certainly won’t want to reduce their sudden extra income either.

An interesting battle to come between PFA, big clubs, UEFA and FIFA down the line…….can see a player strike.

Totally agree with this. 2-game weeks should be a rarity, not the norm.

Most clubs have long injury lists by this time in the season, and the vast majority of injuries are stress-related caused by overplaying. It has the effect of greatly reducing the quality of football as the season progresses, and more and more games turn into an uninspiring slog between patched-up teams. Most coach's pre-season tactical formations are in tatters a month or two into the season and many jobs are lost because of bad luck with injuries.

Personally, I'd look to reduce the Championship, League One and League Two down to 20 teams each (and maybe use the surplus 12 teams plus 8 from the conference to form a new "League Three"?) 46 games in a season is just too many and I doubt many other countries have professional leagues of over 20 teams. This would be too radical though, with club and TV company lawsuits flying about everywhere and fan protests.

I think with more internationals filtering down the lower leagues its not the worst idea, plus with the cost of living crisis it makes football more affordable.

We'll have had a 59 game season this season with the cup's its absolutely mental considering the size of squads etc. and with International postponements/Reading/Weather postponements.

Plenty of big clubs in the non league to make a L3 workable.

12:30 kick off final day on the Saturday... at least the season is over 2 and a half hours earlier which is a relief for us!

Great, an even earlier start for a 344 round trip along the M5/M6 then!

The youth lad we've been throwing in up front, got an England U17 call up, scoring twice in 2 minutes on his debut, which means our strikers have scored as many goals for the England international set up in 45 minutes as they have in the Vale side in 2024!

Great for young Dipepa mind after his first career assist v Fleetwood and goal v Shrewsbury, shouldn't be thrown into this situation and should be out developing but its a rare positive this season

Nothing more boring than an international break in the middle of a bunch of dead rubber games

Bonkers losses at Wigan last season.

Another club cheating? Well there's a surprise! If it went by who actually played by the rules, we'd probably be in the Premier League by now!

Until they start chucking clubs out of the league, this will keep happening.

Just had a quick look at their accounts, even with the bigger away followings in the Championship they only took 2.6 million in season ticket and matchday income. Their wage bill was 23 million. Their new billionaire chairman bailed them out big time and paid off all the debts.. They always get lucky. just a spawny club.

Which part is the cheating? Making a loss?

No, because most clubs do. It's the size of the loss because the size of Wigan as a club clearly can't sustain what they were spending. If it's a manageable loss, fair enough, but that's just ridiculous and amounts to cheating in my book.

This is what I'm saying. Vale are propped up by some input from our chairman (as are most clubs). But it's not ridiculous amounts far beyond our income. A £23 million wage bill is ridiculous given their income and is cheating other clubs who try to run sensibly.

He was your best player against us when he came on. That's both testament to him but indicative of the woeful performance.

We have submitted a planning application for a stadium that will cost in the region of £150-£200 million. If we don't get it the club is as good as dead anyway. If they do get permission to build, it might kill the club anyway. Nobody knows where the source of the money is coming for or how it'll be repaid.

Bonkers really.

A £23m wage bill would probably still have you in the bottom 6-8 clubs in the championship, as it’s an overall wage bill too, first team player wages will probably sit at roughly £13-15m which is a drop in the ocean considering other teams at the same level are around £40m plus.

Wigan’s wages this year, id imagine are considerably lower, as will be their turnover.

One part in the statement was about still dealing with some of the high wages so you'd imagine that if those players aren't out of contract this summer and/or can't move them on, they'll have to cut their wage budget even further.

Which is fine if you've got the turnover to at least keep it manageable. Wigan clearly haven't.

Aye but they still have something to play for, although probably only for party purposes by the last game
Yep, was going to add that. Apparently the hotels in Lincoln are getting very full for the Friday night. If we still have something to play for and decide to use some of the Stacey West for home fans, it might get a bit messy with ticketless Pompey supporters.
