Said exactly the same when he was with us when he was about 19/20, has all the attributes to go to the very top but he just has zero striking instincts. Can't fault his effort but i'd rather see it used for busting a gut to get on the end of crosses, rather than closing down goalkeepers.

That said, 6 goals in less than 20 starts for Bradford last season isn't bad going.

He fitted well into Parky's style so he will be a decent signing for them. Parkinson loves a striker who basically puts a shift in and defends from the front for 90 minutes, if he scores it's a bonus. Can see why he went there, probably paying him more as well seen as Parkinson sorted out his contract offer from us and knew exactly what we could afford.

As I said before as well Leigh is a good signing for Bury, glad he's sorted it out as you can see he's got talent, he just needed to play.

Think so, not sure though

Sordell is, yeah, we released him at the end of last season. Whether he would have stayed or not if we had wanted him to I don't know, but I wouldn't have kept him. Looked good in the FA Cup game against Charlton and clearly has potential just going from his background, but showed nothing else to impress me last season.

Proctor put a shift in and got his head on a few balls but he'll be used as a battering ram holding up long balls at Bolton. He probably wouldn't have fitted into our more attacking style.

Surprisingly we are not signing Charlie lee as he morphed into Dean Parrett.

Why terrified? Isn't life all about enjoying the ride no matter where it takes you?
Not if it takes you into League 2 and beyond!

Very interesting to watch from the outside though. I can see how it would be exciting as we tasted it with Di Canio. Lukas Magera was the best example of how it sometimes doesn't quite work out how you'd hoped though. 4 caps for the Czech Republic, we thought he was going to be class. Bobbins.

I really really wanted Margera to work out. :(

Who was the left back we signed from Cluj? Everyone was really excited because Cluj were in the Champions League and he looked decent on the Youtube clip. Turned out to be useless.

I think another Vale fan said the best case scenario is that they find a gem amongst these signings and can make a mint from it, but be prepared for them to be shipping back to whence they came sooner rather than later.

Also reminds me of the DiCanio early signings, and that was a mistake that was only remedied by him having the budget to go out and sign loads of British replacements until he got it right. It also has the same pattern as Notts County last season, and that was a disaster. But who knows, could be a masterstroke, but as the Vale fan further up said, it will be "interesting!"

We have signed Dan Crowley on a season long loan from Arsenal. Very highly rated and a lot of clubs in for him apparently.

We had Dean Parrett on loan a couple of years back when he was at Spurs. Didn't really shine but I think maybe found his level in league 2.

Have a horrible feeling you guys are going to have a good season Eric.

This is what Lee Johnson said about him - After Crowley was recalled Barnsley manager Lee Johnson, himself an Arsenal academy graduate, expressed his disappointment at losing the player, claiming he is "the best 18-year-old I've ever seen"

Dan Crowley is an excellent signing for Oxford.

Saw him last season against us and he was class.

Tavares I am excited about (not official yet but training today so assume he will be announced Monday). Him and Grant in midfield would be decent I think. The rest are a gamble though.

Town have signed Bury right back Joe Riley for an undisclosed fee. With no right back on the books it's good to see one brought in, and a decent one at that.

Knight-Percival, despite his slightly suspect fitness, is a big loss. I hope there is a similar calibre player in his position joining the club as neither of the new centre backs signed this summer are in the same class.

As has been said elsewhere, we could easily continue buying players to keep us around mid-table or even British players who could take us back down to L2 or we can take a punt by doing what we are doing and actually giving Vale fans the excitement of the unknown. I know which I prefer

Not great, was with us in his youth days.

I wish you lot would get your act together and sign the better players from this division like we did. You more than have the budget, and the attraction of a big club in that league.

Brentford are currently in the process of signing a lot of the best from this league!

I'm getting quietly optimistic myself. Two more signings next week apparently before our Spanish pre season tour (which we're taking 400 fans to!) and we were a good side anyway. Just need to keep hold of Roofe and O'Dowda and we'll be challenging.

Romaine Sawyers departs for Brentford, on a 4 year deal. He follows Anthony Forde who joined Rotherham on a 3 year deal (good agent work), Sam Mantom who has joined Scunthorpe on a 3 year deal and Andy Taylor who has joined Blackpool on a 2 year deal.

tbh I don't think Bentley had a great season last year made quite a few mistakes. One of those being against Gillingham when he got lobbed from 40 yards. Still, he will go on to be great, certainly has the right mentality for it. I hope we have a sell on clause because Brentford will be a stepping stone for him.

Bentley stopped the game at ours near the end of the season being a genuine cricket score. Any scout in the crowd that day along would have been writing contract details up for the respective manager he was representing.

Sawyers will do well in the Championship, providing he's not overally sensitive and he actually shoots more.

I'm not denying the geezer is class, he really is. He just made more mistakes this year than last when he really was impeccable. He will play in the premier league

What's the reason for the mass exodus at Walsall? I thought you would have kept your better players and tried for automatic promotion this season (playoffs at least).

We have already signed 6 players, we don't ever sign a player pre-July, so to have 6 in already.. who will be more expensive in some departments (Cuvelier and Oztumer will be on a decent salary, Oztumer had a Championship offer and was being paid by Posh who won't have paid him a pittance).

Whitney made it clear at the end of last season that he wanted to keep certain players (Sawyers, Demetriou and Forde were all offered 'significantly' better terms).. the rest are basically 'solid' players that if you keep you are 'okay with' but if they lose, are replaceable. The contracts offered to Taylor/Cook were a reduction in terms and they were told that they were likely to be squad players. Take it or leave it.

Taylor was second behind Henry, at his age with his career he probably thought playing time was better for him, plus Blackpool offered 2 years, compared to our 1.

Cook was signed on a decent contract by Dean Smith, on the basis he would repeat his loan form. He got injured and played second fiddle to Bradshaw ever since. He was always likely to leave as he needs to play football too.

Whitney dropped Mantom a few times, including after the 4-0 Bradford defeat where he questioned the bollocks of the players, basically. It was then reported a few players didn't like Whitney's approach, that he's more like a military trainer than a manager (a nice guy like Dean Smith).. he was offered a 2 year deal. The fact Scunthorpe have offered 3 and a bit more money, makes me think he wanted the security. His contract reflected his awful second half to the season.

Forde's got a good deal out of his agent, fair play to him. He's decent, not Championship quality but has a great attitude.

Lalkovic was in and out of the team, as he could be hot or cold. We only offered him a 1 year deal to which he said he expected a 'significantly better' contract. He's in league 2, presumably Pompey could match his wages.

Downing is a solid defender, but nothing to write home about. Central defenders at this level are ten a penny basically. He gets bullied by big strikers, dragged out of place by little ones and he hoofs it all too frequently. I'm surprised the Dons picked him up.

Sawyers, was always leaving, even if we had been promoted. Demetriou wanted to relocate back home to Essex where his wife has just had a baby and as mentioned above Mantom/Forde have got more money/better offers.

Taylor, Cook, Mantom, Lalkovic, Downing are all somewhere between 'steady or solid' who can be excellent one game and an absolute nightmare the next. Solid squad players, but nothing to get exicted about. Mantom and Lalkovic could go on to improve but Mantom's not been the same since having almost a year out and Lalkovic doesn't show enough consistency, could go either way him.

The only issue I'm worried about is the continuity of the side. Smith spent 2 years building a good team, last season we only added 2/3 players and for whatever reason they clicked. This year, we are bringing new faces in, new personalities, people who don't know the club, the fans. An exodus was always on this season and it's only really seemed a bigger exodus than expected because a promotion season on a CV attracts eyes and our contracts were smaller/poorer on purpose.

FWIW, we have kept Etheridge, O'Connor (best centre back), Henry, Bradshaw (so far) and Adam Chambers (absolute rock of the team, player of the season)..

We shall see, but don't believe everything that it says on the tin. 3/4 players were always going to leave, 2/3 left because we offered them poor contracts on purpose and 2 have gone because they thought a good season in league one would bring them bigger riches at WFC.

Ironically, we are only about 2/3 short of the same squad we ended the season with, it's only the 1st of July, probably a record for us.

Everyone that left got replaced very quickly. Oztumer for Sawyers, Edwards for Demetriou, McCarthy for Downing, Cuvelier and Dobson for Mantom plus a young lad in to our development squad. Just need to replace the wide lads and get a backup left back and we are looking midtable once again. I bet other teams (Oldham in particular) have a bigger rebuild than us at the moment. We need like 3 or 4 players.

This reminds me of when Di Canio brought a load of foreigners across. I can't remember one who was a success sadly. It was the domestic lads he signed that did well. I really do think at this level bringing across a load of unknowns from foreign shores is a huge gamble, which Vale fans to be fair have held up their hands and admitted.
It's a risk no doubt about it but we weren't getting anywhere with your dodds and leitch smiths and if page had have stayed we would have signed more journeyman league 1/2 players just like every other club in this shite league and hoping it would come good. From what I can see, we're signing young, raw but technically good footballers and ribeiro has a plan. We'll supplement with a couple of English lads and we've already got our better players on contracts from Last season. I'd sooner take a gamble than plod along as a perennial mid table meanderer

He's a decent young player, I'm disappointed that we are losing him but happy we've got some sort of fee for him. Great at attacking as many full backs are these days but a little suspect at the back a bit like Chris Hussey who's gone to Sheffield United. He's still young though and the defensive aspect could be coached in to him with decent coaching staff/manager. Got a decent shot on him too. You might remember his screamer in our promotion season :)

Good luck to him.
