Knight has a year left and even if he was to leave at the end of his deal then we would still be covered by compensation, given we would be looking at 200 plus first team games and 20 plus international caps - as well as his very likely bumper 20k plus wages at his new club then we would be extremely well compensated. At least to the tune of £1.5-2m. There is no exact science to it, just indicators that are put in for consideration, but I feel the club will be comfortable with the situations around Bird and Sibley - especially Knight.

It just depends on who is spending money this summer in the football league, because I doubt he will be wanted by Premier League clubs so it would just be the pool of teams in the Championship willing to spend £1m per annum in wages and a multi million £ deal. The market just isn’t what it was pre-COVID so I’m not sure. Derby have said there’s been no offers or enquiries for Knight and honestly based on his performances last season, especially in terms of output, I do question whether there is going to be an active market for him.

As you say, it's down to competency. You SHOULD easily build a squad capable of promotion but it all depends on your recruitment team and manager.

Honestly, I think it's better for teams to come 2nd and 3rd in League two than Champions. When we went up under Wilder, we lost him and our best player Ricky Holmes in the summer after. FGR got picked apart the same way last year. Better to go under the radar and underappreciated some times.

Mark Thomas, who was Oxford’s head of recruitment for nine years, was hired last season - so it will be him (and Warne) tasked with what is essentially a rebuild with an expectation for promotion. He had a good reputation at Oxford, so hopefully he proves himself up to it. Replacing an outgoing striker who contributed to 32 goals in all competitions last season is some way to start. Unlikely he would’ve done that next season, of course, given he will be 36. I would also assume that Warne would like a player who presses better so may have gone down a different route anyway.

It’s going to be interesting to see who they bring in.

Think you will certainly have the budget and pulling power to bring in most players you go for.

It’s fucking ridiculous in L2 to be honest and rather unnecessary too. You don’t need to spend huge amounts of cash to get promoted from there. Just be competent and have a good manager the rest will take care of itself.

I would argue that McGoldrick was the best player in the League One last season. He was, at times, just an absolute joy to watch - his ability on the ball was second to none. As someone who never rated him, it was a massive shock - it was like watching a different player to who I remember at Forest, etc. He did randomly take some games off and his intensity during the press probably wasn’t as good as Warne would want, not that it was terrible, but I got the feeling that he likes his strikers to be non-stop whereas McGoldrick was more of a technical player - ideal for a two striker system.

Rodrigues looks good on paper, terrific creatively which is something we lacked last season, sometimes we didn’t have anyone who would force the issue or try cute passes - it seems like he tries those sort of passes non-stop. No doubt he would need to increase his fitness but I do like the thought of Rodrigues as a working progress but wouldn’t want us to put any sort of expectation or pressure on him. I don’t think you can with non-league players. There are very, very few who actually make it that you have to be cautious no matter how good they look.

Steveange have sold Danny Rose for actual money, which seems like a win it itself.

I liked Danny Rose. Always put a shift in, worked tirelessly for the side. Appreciate he didn't score a huge number of goals but his overall contribution to the cause can't be ignored.

At the end of the season when we were down to just Reid and Rose the pair of them were absolutely flogged in a bid to get us over the line.

From reading Borochat it seems he is still living somewhere in the north of England, some commute, so that'd understandably play a role in why he wanted to leave. Glad we've got something for him but a shame to see him go.

In other news, we've signed Nathan Thompson following his release from Peterborough. Don't know a massive amount about him but seems a decent enough signing on paper.

Given the position(s) he plays I fear one of Luther or TVC will be off which will be disappointing - not a guarantee I suppose, so we'll see.

I think Ruben is definitely good enough technically for League One, my only worry would be whether a team as big as Derby would be willing to build the team around him like we did, which I think you probably need to do to get the best out of him.

A lot of it will have been adapting and moving away from home during Covid, but he didn’t really stand out in his first season here when we played a more direct style under Neal Ardley and often shoved him out to the wing. The last two seasons where we’ve given him a free role and let him be the creative centre of a passing team he’s been putting up creative numbers basically unmatched in English football, deserves the chance to see if he can do it at a higher level.

You've only got to look at Jason Steele at Brighton - backup for so long, then eventually gets his chance.

Woodman made 650+ games in lower leagues and made nowhere near that.

Yeah, Rich Cawley is usually quite reliable too although in fairness to him he said it’s his understanding that no bid had been accepted, possible the news just hasn’t been confirmed to him.

We've been linked with interest in Dabo - he would suit our preferred formation going forward as a right wing back, but since his outstanding season in League One he has struggled for form and injuries. He's the very definition of an unreliable short-term option that I hoped we would stay away from. Not to say he couldn't do a job, but even the very best case for him would be a player we would need to find a new home for after getting promoted.

Will Norris was outstanding for us, but sitting in the stands at Wolves and then Burnley really hasn't helped him. Whenever I see him now he doesn't quite seem like the player we all thought he was destined to be.

Sabotaged Pish's promotion hopes though so he's a good lad. Hope he signs for your lot, he deserves to be a first choice keeper at a proper club again!
