Scunthorpe had rather poor player called Pilling.
Lancashire had a useful, if rather short in stature, batsman called Harry Pilling

My best mate back in the 70's was a Grimsby fan and his cousin,who still lived in Gy,used to feed him all the stories from the matches,and I recall the name Geoff Pilling coming up,who was the top boy at that time...or so it appeared.

I was too young for away matches on my own in the early 70s and my dad only went to home games. Only started doing away games in the late 70s and then only local / big cup games. Away travel took off for me when I became a student in 81, had a full grant (remember those) and a railcard...plus hitching. Ended up going to over 80 grounds...

You're on the crest of a wave,life's good,you're back in Lge2 and I'm sure that's boosting your away numbers significantly.
There's no way you'd normally take 1100 plus all the way to Cambridge for a run of the mill fixture.

Our average last season was 689; this season, so far, just above 1000. This is without long trips to Yeovil, Plymouth and Crawley. We had only one local game last season (compared to 3 this season). Finally, the average is always going to rise when you're promoted, just like the home crowd?

Also, my dad was a farmer, we went in the Main Stand - the stand for farmers, trawler owners, freight forwarders etc, there was no swearing allowed in this stand, "top boys" would go in the Pontoon - dockers, deck hands and other ruffians. The older townies, trawler skippers etc would be the Barratt opposite the Main Stand. Everyone knew their place at Blundell Park in those days...Crewe must have alot agricultural support from the Cheshire plains as well?

I don't recall it kicking off much at BP in the 70s but no doubt it did. Scunthorpe apparently took the Pontoon in 71 by arriving before all the dockers got in. Sheff Wednesday games in the mid 70s were really bad - they'd be in every stand. Then of course there was the infamous Leeds game in 1982 - kicked off all over. My car got pelted with apples on the way into Gy when some Leeds fans saw my shirt. I reckon alot of people just stopped going after that game...

Surprised at Scunny taking the Ponny...they were being watched by one man and his dog by the mid-70's.I recall that Leeds game as it made the national press...I remember reading that they'd kicked out the back of the Osmond and were pissing onto peoples gardens or something.Aye,football fans coyld be well naughty back then and certain clubs carried a fearsome reputation.

The Pontoon boys were probably still in The Mariners Rest after coming off the Saturday morning shift on the docks, with the top boys getting their pre-match blow job for half-a-crown (or maybe sixpence) round the back...

Our crowds plummeted the season that started with the Leeds game. I was in the Pontoon which was the only stand without any Leeds fans in it. As we came out the Ponny they were waiting for us. No place for women, children and old men...and back on thread - it was fantastic to see so many women children and old men in the 1,100 at Cambridge...long may that continue...

The novelty of being back in the league has nothing to do with our away support.

Course it has.If you had been a mid table side in this league for the last few seasons,no way would you have support like that.
Your support has never been that great up here.

Not really - I know its 90 miles but it is still their closest game. Compare Carlisle taking nearly 3k to Blackpool and 2k to Morcambe...

Carlisle do have better support than us.But they haven't got 3 big clubs on their doorstep to compete with.
Same with Grimsby.

Our away support has been improving for a good 3/4 years.

Gy away support started increasing in the Conference - for example 1000 to Gateshead for a run of the mill fixture - never matched to Hartlepool or Darlo for league games, and I think other former league clubs followed that trend - perhaps Luton fans would like to comment. A function of - {lower prices, novelty of new grounds, winning quite alot}. That has continued into this season but will inevitably will fall back unless we carry on winning alot. Don't underestimate the impact of price. I thought nothing of taking me and two or three offspring to games when I could do that for £25 plus petrol money. When it gets to £50+ I think twice / ration the games...

Me being a reasonable chap,I will admit that the County Ground name appears to have very much fallen out of favour,even with the club itself (they clearly prefer the title 'Meadow Lane Stadium'),BUT I am undoubtedly correct,atleast historically,in referring to their gaff as The County Ground.

Yep, and the 1689 we took to Kidderminster was the lure of buying a nice carpet on the way, and the 1700+ to Halifax was the lure of erm.... seeing some nice hills.

Unfortunately it was impossible to take any nice countryside photo's as every photo had at least 2 coppers on it as there was pretty much a copper for every square metre of ground as West Yorkshire police mistakenly thought that Halifax were playing Russia and not Grimsby Town, overkill at it's best.
