I live in Macclesfield and know a few Stockport fans around here but I've never seen Stockport as a rival. In my 20 odd years of going we've rarely been in the same league for long. Similar to how I see Shrewsbury really. Local games but never spend too much time together in the modern day.

Tranmere we've played loads but there's never any needle. I think we have very cordial relations going back to the promotion we won together in 1989.

Vale and Stoke the big two owing to lots of Stokies working in the Crewe area and we don't even play Stoke anymore. Not played Chester and Wrexham in years so they're dormant rivalries these days but there are much closer ties between Chester and Crewe than Stockport and Crewe plus the England-Wales edge with Wrexham is also another factor.

Macclesfield was just a preseason game that became a league game for a few seasons. Only dislike them now cos that tit Savage is involved.

I’ll be honest apart from the Clayton Donaldson incident I’ve just never felt much towards Crewe personally either positively or negatively. For me it’s Stoke then Walsall (historically many older Vale fans would even put them right alongside the shit) before we come to your Crewe’s etc.

Tbh from a personal point of view I'm not really sure. I can't say I get wound up by rivalries - you obviously don't want local sides to beat you or be successful though. When I was younger, I got far more into Lincoln games against Scunthorpe, Boston and Peterborough than I did Grimsby but ask someone who's a slightly different age and they'd probably say different.

Mansfield, Chesterfield, Notts are just local games, they have their own area there for their rivalry triangle. Doncaster are only local as well, there's no real history there.

We always had the Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Boston rivalries. But in Boston's case, they sank down the leagues years ago and even friendlies don't have any real excitement or trouble to them anymore. Grimsby fans probably see their rivalries as Scunthorpe, Lincoln and Doncaster(?).

SoC probably covers it fairly well to be fair and I'd agree. It almost feels like Lincoln/Grimsby ended up as rivals by default in recent history because no-one else locally has been at roughly the same level for long enough, and in Boston and Scunthorpe's case, won't be for a while either. That's why I agree with SoC when he says neither side would put each other top. It's not some sort of pride thing where neither set of fans can bring themselves to do it and give the other side the satisfaction of doing so, it's just all felt a bit of a circumstantial, I don't want to say forced, rivalry at times.

In fact, I'd probably argue a huge chunk of Lincoln fans get far more wound up by Peterborough than Grimsby, I do, and they're only an extra five miles or so away anyway.
Yeah I'd definitely agree we ended up as rivals by default, but that's not to say I'd downplay it really. I've enjoyed the butting of heads with Lincoln over the years and despite a handful of poor quality games (thinking specifically 2007 to 2010ish), the games have generally been good.

Matches with Scunny I've not enjoyed as much. I think I've said before but there's more of an ingrained toxicity to that one, it's a nastier rivalry. But it's without a doubt our main one for me.

I don't class Donny as a rival, I don't think they do either. It's good because it's nearby and we travel well there as do they to us but it's not one that I overly care about. Both sets of fans stubbornly see themselves as the bigger/better club and that's fine by me, got to have that sense of pride.

Hull would be the other one making up our top three if we ever got chance to play them in the league again but I can't see that happening. Was traditionally a big one before the 90s, so I've never known it.

Grimsby aren’t a rival, for me a rivalry has to have a certain amount of animosity to it. For us we certainly feel it with Scunny but I’m not overly sure it’s the reciprocated the other is Rotherham, they like to say they aren’t our rivals but the hatred shown from them every time we play each other says something entirely different

For me Rotherham are one of those teams that are easy to hate. I think it’s a combination of some arrogant fans on socials but also they’ve hired some right pricks over the years like Evans and Moore. One of our most unlikable clubs in the last 20 years.

They also did that take the point hit for financial irregularities, avoid relegation and then spend loads on promotion the next season thing which doesn't endear them to the masses.

Things like that are soon forgotten, look now further than Leicester City not long before their amazing fairytale premier league title win.

You see us as a big rival?

I’ve never thought Donny really cared that much, certainly not like Grimsby do. Go on any of our club tweets and you’ll find Grimsby fans insulting us but you’ll never see Donny fans.

Fairly sure you were chanting about Rotherham during our game yesterday too and we were chanting about Grimsby.

We chant about you both although Rotherham is seen more of a rivalry than yourselves

When I was growing up it was always Barnsley that were seen as our main rivals, we had some great seasons battling one another in the 70's 80's.

Now we never seem to be in the same league so it's kind of died and over recent years they have been seen as a club to try to emulate,

Doncaster in my time of supporting us over 60 years have never been considered as anything more than a local game. Of course there will be abusive chanting when we are playing one another but not as a general thing.

In fact now Woody is your captain there will be plenty of Millers hoping you can get promoted.

Of course we have always hated Wednesday the most, even when we rarely played them.
Of course they say they only have one rival and it isn't us obviously.

The other team we really dislike is Chesterfield, probably because we went about 17 games without beating them over one period and not least for an incident where their fans ran on the pitch after a game at Millmoor and threw a corner flag into the Tivoli end, it landed about 6 feet away from me and took idiocy to a whole new level.

Aye before the Donaldson incident, Vale was just a local game. I'm from the era where Stoke were the enemy and I still dislike them intensely more than Vale. I respect those who watch Vale for not taking the easy way out when Stoke were in the Premier League. But we won't be playing Stoke again anytime soon and, even if they ended up in L1, they wouldn't be in it for long sadly.

That said, I've worked with tons of Vale fans and, for any fan under 25, Vale have been the big game in their lifetimes I'd say.

There are people older than me that hold intense dislikes of Wrexham and Chester, though we won't be playing the latter anytime soon. I'd say those two were our traditional local rivals and it's only due to our rise in the 90s and their decline that we started looking East for big local games instead of West.

It’s more than chanting though, I go to other local games and there isn’t the undercurrent of violence as you get when we play yourselves

We took a 17 point deduction the first year we had to play at Don Valley.
Tony Stewart took over after years of mismanagement and Mark Robins almost got us into the play offs despite the deduction.

I wouldn't say we spent loads as Tony is a very sensible owner regarding finances but he did enough business to get us competitive and a combination of astute managing and the fact that other teams just couldn't cope with playing a DVS gave us a great advantage.

You mean like when County fans were waving fake money at other fans when Sven was there and the much vaunted Middle Eastern backers?

His teams have always played like thugs against us, especially that Tranmere team. When one of his players nearly took one of our’s head off with a deliberate elbow. Maybe it’s just because he’s a bit of a dinosaur but always found his teams dirty. But no he’s no Steve Evans, no one’s that bad. Didn’t we beat you last time we played at VP?

Ronnie Moore was also extremely vociferous back in 2002/03ish when we were struggling financially for us to be thrown out of the league. So yes, easily dislikable.

That's not the same. That far more like when Chelski fans were waving cash when Abramovich took over and they were beating teams week in week out.

Have another go.

No we won 3 0 last time at VP it was 2017 but I was more referring to in the last 10 meetings we have won 8 and drawn 1 but of course it will change eventually, we even started beating Chesterfield but our overall record against them is a bit embarrassing.

Sorry I don’t count reserve games where our manager isn’t even there and we start with a 15 year old CB, was referring to a game that matters like the league. True though during Evans’ reign you battered us every game. In fact this season was our first ever victory over the twat.

Evans was very successful for us and a really gracious engaging man when you meet and talk to him.

Of course I thoroughly understand why other teams fans can't stand him but I doubt he cares TBH, very much the same as Neil Warnock.

Why couldn't your manager be at the game BTW?
