More missed chances and we’re two down away to Forest, €15m (lol) man Carvalho with both.
And set up by a bloke some of our fans feel should be starting in the Premier league !

About 5 mins away from getting a Championship scalp as it stands. The Tottenham loanee has scored two on his debut, he looks like a danger.

We were absolutely excellent. Started off slowly for the first 15 and Coventry dominated so we switched to 4 at the back and after that for the next 75 minutes we were well on top and fully deserved the win.

We seem to be organised, pacey and have a coaching team that can spot problems and make effective changes. It’s quite strange. And in two games defending single goal leads we’ve not been under the cosh at all so Calderwood clearly having an impact at the back.

I thought it was an entertaining, open game last night. Oldham look a decent attacking side, as last season, so it will be interesting to see if they have sorted their defensive issues out this time around.

As for us, it was sloppy to give away a two goal lead, but I thought we looked good going forward in the second half and I think we have a decent squad again this season. Glatzel is a real talent and it was a quality assist for the first goal. Elliott Nevitt looks a natural finisher and despite all the attempts to bring in a 'name' striker, we might actually have a goalscorer in the building already.

However, it was a very 'Tranmere' moment for our own supporters to knock an advertisement hoarding on top of him and injure him in his goal celebration.....

Brentford away, good to get another crack at a Premier League side. Might come up against our old boy Ethan Pinnock although expect he’ll be rested.

Another encouraging performance from ourselves, once we woke up and stopped making things difficult for ourselves after a harsh lesson against a side two leagues higher, QPR really should've wrapped the game up by half time, but we did grow into the game.

Second half we deservedly levelled - Happy for Aaron Drinan, hopefully that goal will give him some confidence, he works hard but has alot to learn still.

Going out is not the worst thing, as we still need bodies back. Our bench again was very inexperienced.

Lost 2-1 at Forest.

We were superb and would've won the game if we showed some composure in front of goal. Stone Wall penalty not given and a host of chances missed. Really hope we find our shooting boots and soon.

Shrewsbury away. Could be better, could be worse.

Could also be the opportunity to shout "Don't tell him your name, Pyke" if our former loanee, Rekeil, comes to the attention of the ref...

QPR passed us off the park in the first half, but we were superb in the second. Should have won but not disheartened by losing on penalties to a side with some excellent technical players. Would think on the strength of that showing from a - mostly - reserve side, QPR will be featuring in the Championship playoff hunt.

Southampton H in round 2 is another good draw for us against PL oppo. Could be one for the TV - apart from Barrow v Villa, don't see too many other potential giant killings. Dave pitch should be ready for 24/25 August so fingers crossed we'll be able to give the Saints a warm welcome.

i know full well that goalkeepers get a foul for any sort of contact nowadays and that it's just part of the game, some will go for you and some will go against you, but what the fuck is this?:

surely that's either play on or a penalty?

compounded by a fucking ridiculous penalty awarded to sunderland later on which was posted earlier in the thread. well and truly robbed in this game.

Looking forward to all the Barrow folk who have never been to a game before coming along to boo the Villa players they've heard of.

It’s only a cup but a bit gutted about last night, always made worse by a shit ref decision. Seems like league 2 teams have been on the arse end of decisions in the first round, except Salford of course who got a penalty about 5 yards outside the area.

But for a two minute spell where we switched off for the goal we were by far the better team. They made 10 changes one of which was the goal scorer who cost them £13 million, which is more than any club is worth at our level alright for some. The gap between the championship and the bottom two leagues in the FL continues to grow which is a worry if we hope to get back there.

Our dismal record in the League Cup continues. Since our great run in 1974/75 when we played nine matches in reaching round 4, we have entered the competition 43 times, losing in the first round 27 times and the second round 15 times, with a solitary third round appearance in 2008.

IMO I agree and too often goalkeepers get away with too much because they are the goalkeeper. Similar to the keepers who slide out and take out the player after the shot, irrespective of whether it goes in or not.
In this it is a decision of least resistance :
Allowing the goal will/would cause more controversy than not.

We get it virtually every season recently! we get drawn against a PL team at home and they all crawl out of the woodwork, snapping up all the open sale tickets, so unless your a season ticket holder or trust member you have a hell of a job getting tickets even if you attend every home game.
The only way around it as i see is to give vouchers out at the two league games prior to the tie, that will guarantee you a ticket and significantly raise the attendance for those two games but unfortunately for us we hav'nt got a home game until a week after the tie.

We did that v Crawley 3 years ago. Was one of the options to give priority to a ticket v Spurs the following week. Had almost 6,000 at the Crawley game as a result.

This happens to me a lot.

I'm a shift worker so I don't normally buy a season ticket and the club has an annoying habit of putting tickets on sale when I can't get to the ticket office.

I've missed quite a few important games over the last twenty years but hey! I can truthfully say I've never seen us relegated.

Can definitely be filed under the term ‘Tinpot’.
That being said, if it means our owner has to cough up for the resulting fine, I’m all for it.

Small mention for the brief pitch invasion when you scored though, crashing over the electronic hoardings and crushing one of your own players in the process.
I've seen ours back and it's literally one bloke who's brought the whole lot crashing down by trying to jump over them. I'm not condoning pitch invasions, and the daft bastard who's tried to jump them would probably be looking at a banning order if half the home attendance wasn't on the pitch at the end, but the hoardings shouldn't go over as easily as that. Crushing our own player in the celebrations is a worthy addition to the tinpot thread, though.

Long overdue a decent tie in any cup to be fair. We got the FA cup 3rd round a couple of years ago and we got fucking Oxford away after mammoth trips to Exeter and Yeovil twice.. Still boils my piss, that. Been going to Pools since 98 and I think the biggest club we've pulled in that time is probably West Ham.

Yeah, we're definitely overdue. I was around for the time when we were truly spoiled with League Cup draws - Spurs, Palace, Sheff Wed and Arsenal (twice), all in the space of six seasons from 1990, and this being a time when it was two legs, and top clubs took the comp seriously so they played strong teams. Obviously you go to watch your own team, but it was still a pleasure to see the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Ian Wright and Dennis Bergkamp at the Vic.

It's been slim pickings ever since. I actually missed the West Ham game, but Sunderland away was fun.

You knew you would be playing Oxford if you beat us, you really should have let us win that day.
And I still can't believe we let a two goal lead slip with ten minutes to go....

It's because dreamboat Mark Cooper is so camera friendly.
