That's a bit of an odd word to use, angry. It's refreshing that football is now based on results and not the anachronistic re-election system.

Anyway, I'm pleased we're finally credible enough to not be classed under the tinpotters.

I agree, as frustrating as it is to be playing in the division between smaller teams than us, they're all up here on merit and we're down there because we've been bloody awful for two seasons in a row. Things would be boring if the same 92 teams remained in the football league and as tinpot as the likes of Fleetwood and Morecambe may seem, surely no one would begrudge them their turn at playing at a higher level.

Commiserations to both, I'm really sorry to see you both go. With the exception of your club folding, this is the worst experience a football fan can go through - I still remember our 0-0 draw with Rochdale that sent us down 10 years ago, it's horrible.

That said, it can give the club an opportunity to sort itself out. We're a better club all round than 15 years ago.

Hope to see you both back soon.

I do not disagree that Yates had gone stale at Cheltenham but this tell a story

Yates: P 22 W 8 D 4 L 10 = 58 points over season which this season is mid table nothingness
Buckle: P 12 W1 D5 L6 = 8 points or 31 over a season
Milton P9 W1 D4 L4 = 7 points or 36 over a season
Johnson P6 W1 D0 L5 = 3 points or 23 points over a season

So well done Gary - you had a worse record than Buckle!

As I said, with one game left of the season there's still time for him for sign for another club and make it a hat-trick of relegations.

Although replacing Yates with Buckle was an absolute shocker. That man should never get a job in football again. They may have been on the slide at the time Yates was sacked, but were still 10 points ahead of the relegation zone, and it was tight at that time, they were only 8 points from the playoffs after a decent early spell in the season. Any other manager but Paul Buckle would probably have been able to do something with that... even Yates probably wouldn't have gotten them relegated.

Buckle was the worst thing ever to happen to this club. He came in and completely ripped apart the team, got rid of good experienced players (Byron Harrison, Jason Taylor) and relied on youth players who clearly weren't ready. Getting rid of Yates when we did was a big mistake - either he should've gone last summer, or we should've stuck with him for this season. I have no doubt we'd still be in the FL with him in charge.

Winning at Wembley, oldest ground in football league history, been in the league 78 years and only 5 out of it. Beat a west ham side full of world cup winners. Played as high as the second tier. Last team to have had two players score 30+ goals in a season. First team to play a floodlit match. FA cup quarter finalists. League Cup Quarter Final. Most goals scored by one player in a game with 8. Fastest league cup hatrick. First team to go unbeaten in a 23 home game season. Were a small club thats had shit time recently since Haslam, but with a big history of being a football league club. So Who the fuck are Morecambe?

First Floodlit match? How is that an "achievement"?

Try winning 2 FA Cups, a record final win (6-0 v Derby), first team to score 1,000 goals in each of the top 4 divisions.

I could go on..

Mansfield are a small club with a bang average history.

And 78 years of FL status isn't that much, there are loads of teams in this league who have been in the FL for over 100 years and never been out of it

That's a very tinpot post. You sound like a guy who goes on about going the gym all the time because they've got a small dick.

As I've said a few times in here, I don't think I ever really believed Tranmere would drop until a game or so ago when it was looking utterly hopeless - and even now it's still a massive relegation, bigger than Bristol Rovers I'd say but equally as shocking. Conference is looking trickier by the season, as others have alluded to with bankrolled teams and former league clubs it's going to be extremely hard for Tranmere to get back in at the first time of asking. Still it might prove to be a good thing in some respects, if they win more consistently *which you imagine they should* and have one or good seasons, you get that winning mentality back and attract the fans back that haven't been in a while. You'd obviously rather have stayed in the league, but you have to look for positives somewhere.

I'm more gutted for Cheltenham, mind. Club not too dissimilar to our own with supporters who I get along with quite well, but sadly it's not surprising. Easy to say in hindsight but I think most knew it was a mistake to sake Yates, or at least sack him and then appoint who they did. Will probably be tough for them next season, although a decent overhaul of the squad and you never know. Hope they consolidate and make it back sooner rather than later. We're losing a terrific grandstand to non-league if nothing else.

Just highlights what an achievement it is that Morecambe, Accrington and to a lesser extent ourselves are pretty comfortably safe of the drop at this stage of the season. Hasn't been easy at times this year, but we've got there again.

Goodbye league 2, what a bloody awful season that was. I wouldn't mind but the standard of football in league 2 is appalling which makes us, Tranmere shittier than shite! For me it all started to go wrong when we lost both Matt Hill and Danny Woodards to long term injuries and I think that that put paid to Rob Edwards tenure more than anything else.
Along comes Micky Adams and everything appears fine, playing 5 in the middle and grinding out results, then he drops this formation to make way for his Port Vale old boys and everything goes tits up and the rest is history.
Marcus Holness was by far the worst center back I'd ever seen, that was until the arrival of Adam Dugdale from Crewe. Then there's George Donnelly signed for a fee from Rochdale who's now warming the bench at Southport. Iain Hume signed from the Indian super league by the chairman who was as about as much use as tits on a fish.
Christ knows how many players have come and gone this season, more than 4 teams worth of which we could of made one decent league one team out of, and another team capable of avoiding the drop.
Hello Bananarama conference, some old faces down here from the past. Will be nice making acquaitences again with our old friends down the road in Wrexham, Chester and Southport. I'm particularly looking forward to visiting The Three Pigeons pub for a pre match drink in Halifax too.

Glad I'm missing the end of the season, I'm currently in Thailand studying the flora and fauna. Phnarr phnarr.

Besides, his grouping of clubs is a bit odd. Newport County have played in a European competition quarter-final, which I'm pretty sure Mansfield will never achieve and Cambridge Utd were once within two matches of reaching the Premier League.

Hmm. I'm always wary to bear in mind Welsh Clubs getting a stab in Europe. Of course Mansfield won't acheive that, neither would Newport with the same conditions.

Someone in this league will reach Europe surely at some point.

Look a Swansea as an example, Bournemouth to a lesser extent.

25 years from now Mansfield could be an established PL club with Radfords billions

How could I forget Wigan!

So let me get this right, as I'm new to this board. A couple of naive posters write pretty dim mundane diatribe so the general feeling amongst some here is that it must mean the whole of that clubs fanbase must be morons?

Are a few of you like 14, or are you equally as bad in your sweeping suggestions?
If it's the latter then perhaps this isn't a place for me.

Not at all Flaxman. I didn't bother to reply as I realised at once that the poster in question must have had a bad day or something. Otherwise he wouldn't have said Mansfield are bigger than Cambridge.

And of course Mansfield Town could one day reach the Premier League; same as every other club in League 2.

Nobody can predict the future.

The list of Prem clubs over the last few years reads like a who's who of former basement clubs.

However, as we all know the odds would be far more likely for us all to end up as the next Stockport County.

After 30+ years a regular at Field Mill, if i didn't have my hope I'd just be left with my view of a great swathe of empty plastic seats.

Hughill putting Hartlepool ahead reiterating my point, he was absolutely shocking when we had him.

Hughill has been great for us,especially yesterday.Talk about physical,he puts himself about & actually looked like he cared considering he's only a loan player

I think Hughill looks a cut above, if he's going spare I'd take him.... first time he's paired up with our own striker they both score , they could be lethal together over a season ....that said, whoever Ronnie decides to keep ,let go or bring in is fine by me, the guy is a genius

I'm still amused by everypnes obsession with club size, I don't get it. Ultimately all clubs are in this league for a manner of reasons but are all here together. Burton are one of the smaller clubs in the league and have gone up, like rochdale were last season, and fleetwood and Crawley before. None have returned

I'd take him if he became available,

Commiserations to Tranmere and Cheltenham.......Ronnie is a miracle worker to turn this around, still can't believe he managed to transform us into the 3rd worst team in the League!

With me it's not an obsession with size , more a puzzle.... how can Bristol Rovers with 6-7000 paying customers not cobble together a team to play in league 2 yet Accrington with just over 1000 can

I doubt you'll get hugill. I read somewhere that Rodgers is looking to sign him if he can offload Balotelli this summer. Spurs are also monitoring his situation just incase they lose Harry Kane.
