You were second for most of that season but to say that you were pushing us for the title is pushing it to be frank. Once we beat you 3-1 at Brunton Park back in October we were clearly ahead and kept increasing our lead. At one point we were about 20 points ahead of you (albeit you had 2 or 3 games in hand).

I still believe to this day we'd won the title apart from losing our 2 key players for 3 1/2 months of the season both at the exact same time.

Granted you kept going and going and that would have seen you win title, but there is a massive difference in pressure when you've a 10-14 point gap to having someone right on your back for the entire season......as shown this year when pressure has led your nice lead to shrink with Bristol R on your back.............well certainly I think we'd had the old 2 sides on about 90 points and then seen who grabbed it.

I take your point but we had key players such as Grazioli and Graham out for long periods of time and that didn't affect our momentum.

true, uits all ifs and buts, it was just I think we'd finished on a similar points total had we not lost them players and it'd been more interesting.

still for the bad luck we got in the league, we got the good luck in play-offs so balances out over the season, so worked out for both of us in the end.

Because the local FA is still the Cumberland FA, local county associations were already well established when the counties were rearranged so there was no real reason to force them to also rearrange.

From memory, there are parts of "Cumberland" where it never happened full stop. There are some natives up there who are ready to sort out any Romans who poke their noses up the valley.

By the way, I was born and brought up in Lancashire - they only turned it into Cumbria after my escape.

Yes, they are still very loyal to Lancashire down Furness way... but back when Cumbria was a geographic area with ancient origins and not a modern county there was no contradiction in this; just as there is no contradiction in someone from Ely saying both that they are from Cambridgeshire and they are from the Fenlands. There were a few uses of the word Cumbria that my Dad was familiar with when he was a lad in the sixties, and I couldn't find out but would be interested to know how long Carlisle United have been known as the Cumbrians for, another example is the Cumbrian Mountains which includes parts of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Lancashire.

But yeah enough about that, and back to the topic of relegation.

Their las home win came against Shrewsbury. They could easily beat anyone if they turn up on the day, where as we seem incapable of doing anything against a top 8 side.

If we are to have any chance of beating the drop, we have to pick up the points in the next 4 games. After this next 4 games we have 3 games against teams in the top 8, followed by the leagues form team on the last day. If after the Dagenham match we're anything less than 6 points clear of the drop, we're as good as relegated.

Think we'll be fine if we pick up 6/7 points out of the next 4 games, that'd put us on 47/48 points. 1 win out of the last 4 would get us to the magic 50 point mark, which I think should be enough.

We do seem to play better against the top half sides for whatever reason, although the form we are in I don't think it matters who we play.

Unless Adams quashes his personal differences with our best striker then we will go down.

By the way, relegation thread now knocking on for ten-times the number of posts of the promotion thread. What this says about this division or this forum I don't know, but I remember it was much a similar story (and mostly the same people ) in the League One relegation thread last season.
