I am a student at Loughborough University working in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts, to help research rivalries in the English football pyramid. The Know Rivalry project is seeking to learn more about the psychological, cultural and commercial effects of football rivalries in the UK.

The views of League 2 fans could be used to support the marketing and broadcasting of the club, especially in the build-up to games against rivals.

As an AFC Wimbledon fan, I am pleased to have been given the task of collecting on League 2 clubs this season and it would be greatly appreciated if you could share your views using the following link: https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3FdJ8eN2EgFCfCB?collID=10&grpID=1424

Feel free to ask any questions.
Thanks, Jude.

There is no proper derby in this division currently. Not one. Thanks for visiting.

Not true, our fierce local rivals Betty's Tea boys just 18 miles away!

Seriously, we are hopeful of renewing rivalry with Huddersfield next season

Our 'rivalry' (Carlisle) is driven entirely by who gets more favouritism on Radio Cumbria.

We dont have a football league rivalry. Ilook forward to the games v Orient, Wimbledon and now Sutton as they are close by (Pompey too) more than any great feelings against them.

When I started it was Hastings, then it went to Dover I suppose we should call out Sutton now....you swine! You stole John Mackie from us. :box:

Geographically it should be Wimbledon, there’s barely 6 miles between the clubs, however we’ve not been in the same division as the Dons since 1964, and for the most part relationships between the 2 sets of fans are cordial

County have never really had a proper two-way rivalry, not a sustained one anyway; even Macc spent their games against us singing about Alty.

We're just too adorable, I suppose.

Surely you're well within the proximity radius for Wrexham to consider you bitter rivals.

Nothing really for Dale. Sadly; our two biggest rivals have both left the EFL...

Nearest one for us would be County.

Salford means absolutely nothing to us.

Likewise us with Chester and Wrexham.

In my time of watching Dale I'd say our traditional rivals, or the teams that our fans want to beat the most are
Bury (non league)
Oldham (non league)
Halifax (non league)
Stockport (only just returned from non league).

There's a theme there and shows that we can count our blessings we haven't dropped (yet).

Accrington, Bolton and Salford also really local and played fairly regularly recently but I doubt anyone cares that much. Though personally I can't stand Salford. Not due to them being a 'derby' match. I just hate everything about the way the club is run since the Class of 92 circus appeared.

Our rivals, Chesterfield and Notts County are non league so don’t count in your survey.

Odd story. In our promotion season from the conference Wrexham did try to raise a hatred of us. On a Tuesday night we took 90 to Wrexham. On the following Saturday we took 11,000 to Man Utd for an FA cup game..

Seems we were not proper fans as it should have been the other way around.

Having Steve Evans in charge and a massive budget just meant the whole division hated you that season. I remember that massive following to OT, absolutely bonkers. More than double your record home attendance at the time, wasn't it?

Our historical rivals are Leeds and Huddersfield - although, we haven’t played either of them in the league since 2001 and 2007 respectively.

There’s been a few cup games, which just don’t cut it (Leeds at home in 2014 was decent tho). This has lead to their younger supporters having no interest in Bradford City; but I’m sure it’s the opposite for their older supporters - particularly Bradford Whites.

We have/had a fierce rivalry with Burnley. They have a few fans near the Aire Valley side of our City. Tbh, I’ve never minded Burnley. Remember going there in 2004 and getting dicked 4-0, though.

Talking of historical rivalries - Bradford Park Avenue. However, when they disbanded, most of their support went to following Bradford Northern/Bradford Bulls or jumped sticks to Elland Road. Nowadays, they refer to us as Manningham FC and still try to spark something of a rivalry when we meet them during friendlies.

Darlington were our only real rivals but that has subsided a lot. Personally I couldn't care less about them now but if we were ever in the same league again that might change.

Carlisle is a bit of a grudge match for some of our respective support but it's not a Derby.

My old dad remembers Tranmere’s old rivals New Brighton. Tickles me because he said the Tower ground’s facilities were that basic that you had no other option but to piss where you stood and that you dare not wear wellies!

Still about double now. Our ground only holds 6k. Does show our potential though as there were quite a few who couldn't get tickets.

Still, complaining about the mis match between Wrexham on a Tuesday and Old Trafford on a Saturday is a bit silly.

This thread is a horrible reminder that all our rivals are in higher divisions than us.

Still better than Swindon Supermarine though. What a win.

I'd argue we don't really have one. Some supporters hate Cardiff, but I subscribe to the idea it has to be felt mutually.

If I could mega like this I would. May it always be that way
I know what you mean but I kinda miss Hastings and it would be nice to sneer at Dover once in a while.

Everyone here treats Crawley as upstarts who need to go back to the nether world of non league football. I expect the same sort of thing would happen to Swindon if they ever got back to the Championship or Orient into league 1.

I think that's less about the division clubs are playing in relative to their size and more about this perceived boundary between league and non-league where above is seen as historic established league clubs and below is seen as tinpot dog and duck and hobby clubs.

Sneaky little dig at Orient though

Carlisle v Morecambe was always a nice underrated one. No animosity but the games were always pretty good. Don't think the games between us ever saw a home-win either because the away team would always be lifted by the size and volume of the travelling support.
