League 2 Rivalries

As Casey has said we don't see Orient or any other team as rivals to be honest - you have to have a local rivalry and a long history of playing each other to get the status of rivals - which we never have had - we can't call Sutton as we seldom play them - last season was the first time we played Sutton in a League game and our only other match was an FA Cup game many years ago. Can't recall there were many friendlies against each other either.

There were a few friendlies towards the end of the 90s/beginning of the 00s.

Even if we had been in the same division before last season we certainly aren’t lacking for more local options for a rivalry, especially this season.

We don’t any in this league, lincoln are a league above and county and chesterfield the one below.

I guess the closest we have to one would be grimsby in this league as there always seems to be some random edge to the games (though they’re a good bunch on here), and i suppose doncaster.

Northampton is only just over an hour but neither side would class each other as rivals.

Lincoln always been more their side, think they finally died down now although it took a few years of them being in a division above lol. The only difference between playing a Donny, Grimsby in comparison to a Northampton etc is a larger away following and crowd generally nothing else to it.

We haven't had a Kent derby in the league since the very early 90s, but the way things are going we could easily have several next season with Maidstone, Ebbsfleet, Bromley (traditionally Kent) and potentially one of Welling, Tonbridge or Dartford coming up as well.

In a way it'd be fun.

Maidstone would get better regular crowds than probably 20% of the current L2 clubs, would love to see them push on and get back in the league. Gills need a proper derby

I was agreeing with you that they aren't really local matches initially but you've done a u-turn and are now claiming that they are local. My main point was that Orient and Wimbledon are decent away days.

We've also just come out of a division that was massively Southern based. Closest two matches were 1 hour 40 mins (Halifax) and 1 hour 50 mins (Notts) away. Everything else was over 2 hours away, with the vast majority being 3+ hours away.

It was 2017, I think that was the year we got pumped 4-1. Thankfully I’ve been lucky with my Mansfield trips (barring the first one in 2013) and the 2 last times I’ve been we won both games 1-0 but the 2 games in between we lost 4-1 and 2-1.

they’re beyond hopeless and cause more problems than it’s worth.

thankfully the police bill isn’t as bad this season going forward as notts police have to pay outside the ground but it’s still crazy.

Having watched Carlisle since the late 80’s the only game I used to find had some grit to it was Darlington in regards to playing them a lot, taking a lot of fans and both sets of fans giving a little bit of a damn (although yes Hartlepool we’re more rivals for them)

But we usually just attach to someone each season.

I always add in Orient, even if location is ridiculous because we have a rich level of history between both clubs, seem to be similar size, play similar levels, we always took alot their and it’s a set of fans I could frankly discuss a vast number of games some good, some horrific

I sit at the opposite end now but I like to think I am personally responsible for starting that block of scrotes.

In 2009ish we did a thread called 'singing block'. This was when we were getting about 1600 attendances some weeks in the Conference. The premise was essentially if you read the thread, think the atmosphere's rubbish, show up in that block and we will sing during the game. At the time I was 16/17 and had little going on.

Around a fortnight of planning went into the first game with the singing block but I didn't show up to the fixture as I was seeing my girlfriend instead at the time which Ben Superstag was incredulous about.

I then went a couple of weeks later to the next home game. I'm not a singer or particularly loud at all; I tried to get Stoney to start a song but he snapped at me and said to start my own song if I wanted to sing as we were losing 0-1, probably to Weymouth or Lewes or something.

The singing block seems to be going from strength to strength now although they've no idea about their roots evidently as no-one has ever thanked me for it.

Great story but I definitely remember earlier scrotes than that back before you went down. There were scrotes in that block to the right of the away end when we won 2-1 in back to back seasons at Field Mill. Maybe they weren't singing block scrotes though. They might have just been waving their arms and doing wanker sign scrotes.

I remember coming back from one of those games and drunkenly ringing up the FA and leaving a voicemail on an answering machine complaining about your keeper kicking the ball into the away end one year.

Ben Superstag though, absolute blast from the past there.

If we are talking about singing groups at Field Mill, I think I was one of a small group who started singing in the North Stand in Oct 1966.
In them days there wasn’t any segregation and folk moved to different ends of the ground at half time. We were playing Doncaster on a Monday night ( we won 3-1). We always stood in the North Stand on the same crush barrier whichever way we kicked but that night a group of Donny supporters were in the North Stand as they kicked towards the North Stand first half. They were having a bit of a go at us by standing behind us and slightly jabbing us in the back and kicking the back of our legs, but we were determined not to move from ‘our’ crush barrier. We didn’t want to turn and fight them as they were bigger than us and they would have knocked shite out of us. We knew if we could tolerate it to half time they would piss off down to the quarry lane end second half.
They did piss off second half and our little group then stated to chant songs and that’s the first time I could remember any singing in the North Stand.
