Thompson was okay, did a vaguely passable job for most of last season. Two year deal though.

That is some team you are building, Cambridge fans.

Get your two central midfield men and I'd make you favourites for autos, not just play offs...

I've noticed last few years half of League One doesn't seem to spend money yet most of League Two spend huge amounts of money to get into League One. I remember Cheltenham a couple of years ago spending the same as we did on players despite less league income, having half our gates and far less in player sales!

I wonder what will happen to Cambridge if they don't get promoted this season, that said I wish them well and hope they can, seems a cracking awayday.

Well, drop down to the Conference and you'll see it on a worse scale. Perhaps not as much as when we were down there, but (recent) historically it was terrible.

Mainly just by you, Cambridge and Portsmouth in fairness. The rest of us seem to be living off League 2 level budgets based on the signings so far...

Northampton always spend huge money, have done since they went down with us in 2009. I don't know how they can afford to year on year because their gates are bang average.

Reckon Oxford, Notts County, Leyton Orient (regardless of this Becchetti scandal), Bristol Rovers and Plymouth will also get the chequebook out significantly this season. Martin Allen is a headache for chairman and loves pushing his budget to the absolute limit as well so Barnet might sign a couple of good players for this division.

Luke Berry has signed from Barnsley on a 4 year deal. Fee is undisclosed, but absolutely delighted with this bit of business. Sold him a year ago for 150k. He was by far our best player, so to have him back is really pleasing.

I'm guessing Luton and Cambridge not being restricted by FFP is a factor, maybe they see this year as an opportunity to take advantage of that.

Or am I dreaming that FFP doesn't apply for recently promoted clubs?

Aren't we? We still have the 55% salary cap at the very least. The Cambridge money in the bank from the FA Cup run last season. We've got some wealthy investors in the background and are about to receive another £500-750,000 from the impending Andre Gray to QPR transfer, whilst probably having close to record ticket sales last season.

Going down to the Conference and restructuring helped our two clubs a lot.

Even less convinced about the finances now, but I am willing to sidestep that for this one, what a signing, chuffed.

I wonder what will happen to Cambridge if they don't get promoted this season, that said I wish them well and hope they can, seems a cracking awayday.

Our Chairman once explained it really well but it was a year ago so I can't remember it, however the gist of it is that League 1 is the worst division to be in, in terms of a financial model. League 2 it's quite easy to be competitive and keep down losses and the Championship is great because of the extra revenue (I think he said around £3m-£5m annually) but League 1 is just a bit of a state of purgatory.

That was a really bad explanation but I guess it's all backed up by him saying our budget this season is higher than it has been for the previous two seasons and also why players are willing to drop from League 1 to League 2 quite easily. I think it's just how football is evolving - between League 1 & League 2 there's a hell of a lot of similar sized interchangeable clubs, more so than any other 2 divisions. It's also why you'd probably see a team like Cambridge spend a bit to try and get out of League 2 and then immediately have a 'season of consolidation' in League 1.

Don't think we would be near violating FFP even if it didn't apply to us. I'm not sure where the idea that we are spunking money this summer has come from tbh.

Sure, we spent £175k on McGeehan - but that deal went through (not publicly but it did) back in February. The transfer fee would have come straight out of the Andre Gray money - we received £600k up front and, until McGeehan joined, had only spent £100k on transfer fees since then.

Likewise, there's no way Cambridge would fall foul of an FFP check. They've released half their squad from last season, had huge revenue increases based on league attendances alone, AND the Man U money on top of that (probably pushing £2 million over the two games I reckon? Plus knock-on effects like the 12-game ticket books they sold to people wanting a ticket to the Man U game).

Wycombe have signed left sided player Ryan Sellers after he was released by Bolton, he'd been training with us at the end of last season after his release so Ainsworth must have seen something he likes, another signing where we didn't have to pay a transfer fee.

One simple reason for that - 4 up, 4 down.

Probably partly true but I also think that's just the way the landscape is developing. Premiership is widening it's gap and so is the Championship and the rest of us are all just in a little pit scrapping about, size isn't really measured by fanbase anymore so having an extra 2000 fans means fuck all when it comes to spending power.

Cambridge going for the 'shit or bust' technique to win promotion, I see.

Bust would be lovely.
