Both clubs have had very good transfer windows.

We are still short of a midfield enforcer and cover up front for Vaughan and Donaldson.

I think Ryan Lowe was canny bringing in a few of the better Bury players, and I expect you to be promoted as Champions

Another of our academy signed by Leeds United, on this occasion Josh Galloway who featured in pre-season and looked good, but hasn't broken through to the first team yet.

Junior Brown has signed on loan until January. Not sure if he will start over Kgosi Nthle or be back up

Col U have signed Theo Robinson on loan from Southend. Scored 7 in 16 for us last season and I think we tried to get him back permanently. Should get goals.

Looks like Sean scannell is leaving for Blackpool. Expected so much from him this season but just not happened, seems unfit and lost a lot of pace.

Nixon reckons it's a swap with harry pritchard - no idea on him.

Not bothered about losing Scannell, an expensive flop, although it leaves us short out wide, never known someone to get so many throw ins because he can’t get a cross past the defender.

An interesting rant about the way the academy system at smaller clubs is going from Stephen Pressley.

Not his exact words but the gist of it is that as it becomes easier and easier for big clubs to just hoover up young players who've shown promise the bar for how much promise they have to show before they get signed by a big club gets lower and lower.

Since a tribunal will set the transfer fee if the player hasn't yet been offered a contract, and in Pressley's view this is a pittance, small clubs therefore have to offer contracts to younger and younger players with less and less experience.

Pressley doesn't like the idea of offering 16 and 17 year old players contracts because they looked OK in a friendly but I think the other implication is that smaller clubs are going to end up spending more and more money on younger players from their academy to try and keep the academy sustainable. In doing this, we're just increasing our own wage bill and therefore the pressure on the academy to produce saleable assets when they should be trying to produce players who can develop here and play for us and be sold only if it's the right move for all parties. Potentially running an academy becomes a high-stakes gamble, if you don't offer the kids contracts they get poached for next to nothing and you lose money; if you do offer them contracts then you pretty much have to sell them or risk losing even more money.

Pressley's pretty opinionated and I'm not sure he always thinks things through; not sure to what level the academy system is becoming less sustainable for us. We have just offered a flurry of contracts though and while this is to ensure we get a fair price if a big club do swoop in, it also means we're spending more money.

Fuck sake that took some time.
Yeah we had to wait for Sheffield United to release him and pay his contract up before we could afford to pay him ourselves (we certainly couldn’t afford his Blades wage).

Genuinely excited about that with him and Jack Roles in one midfield. Probably the most excited I’ve been signed we signed Donaldson, Maxwell, Miller, Champion, Cunnington, Tait, Taylor etc in one window.

AFAIK, all clubs at this level have around 18-22 full time academy lads who are on 2 year scholarship deals where they train full time whilst also doing educational courses, often in conjunction a local college. Imo during that time no other club should be able to poach them. Much better to let the lads develop and get their qualifications without distractions, and then once they're 18 decide where their careers are going. All clubs losing scholars to bigger clubs at the end of the 2 years should be heavily compensated.

Shoodycollins; your boss has a point. A category 1 academy can give you 48 hours notice to watch one of your kids. If he likes him he can sign him for a fee starting from 3k. Yes, £3000!

If this kid then goes on and plays 100 times in the Premier League Carlisle will be due £1.3 million. If it's over 100 times in the championship you get £250k.

Clubs with top academies will soon hoover up all the talent when they are young as it is so much cheaper. Because this will happen. Academies are no longer worthwhile for league 2 clubs.

Carruthers was reportedly on £12,000 a week at Sheffield United. Now they’ve paid him up we can finally get it done. Amazed no one else was in for him.

CC slowly building a very good squad.

Yeah, for the fans it's frustrating to know that the best players in your academy will never pull on the shirt in a competitive game. It also means I think that players in our academies are hoping they don't have to 'progress' to our first team, because that means they've made it to 17/18 year old without getting signed by a Cat1 club

Yes get in! Samir Carruthers joins on a one year deal.
If he's that good, several thoughts emerge.

Why was he only on trial with you during the summer? Why did he get no decent offers?
Why did it take this long to get him a contract? And finally, if he is worth getting excited about, isn't a 1 year deal very risky. One good year and he'll be off again.

I thought something similar. No disrespect to Cambridge, but he is 26 years old and has had a decent career playing at League 1 level and if those reports are correct was on 12k at Sheff United. It does seem very odd that it seemed that only a mid-table league 2 side was interested. Presumably the money that Cambridge were going to spend on Hoolahan has gone on Carruthers?

We signed Zeki Fryers which, for me at least, seems a similar story to Carruthers.

I actually googled Carruthers to have a look at his career and the main thing that came up was him pissing into a glass and pouring away the contents at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016. Classy!

On the pitch if he can live up to his talent he should shine at this level.

The Carruthers deal took so long to get across the line due to Sheff United refusing to pay up the remaining part of his contract. I guess the closer it got to the transfer window one of them was going to blink.

Although it will be reported Carruthers come through the youth ranks at Aston Villa, he was actually at our youth academy before that. He was very well thought of at MK Dons and they singed him permanently after a good loan spell. Sheff United paid £250k for him before joining Oxford on loan but had a bad knee injury early on which affected him last season.

I'm not quite sure why it was classified at a "trial" because I'm sure he was trialling us. He went on tour with us and played in all pre season games. He looked very impressive against Leicester and Ipswich.

I have no idea why others were not interested in him because after a quick look on Twitter last night, a lot of fans from higher up were hoping they'd sign for them after he was released. A one year deal will suit all due to his bad injury last year and his aspirations to get fit and play higher. Hopefully with us.

I’m also going to guess that as Sheffield United paid up his contract, he doesn’t exactly need a high wage but just needs first team football in an environment he feels comfortable in.

He’s probably only accepted a year as he thinks he can probably do better than us in a year’s time. Probably true to be fair.

All fair questions. Quite simply he's had a couple of serious injuries in the last two years and I can only assume people who could pay his higher wage demands did not want to risk it.

He pretty clearly states in his interview he's here to get his career back on track, and there's no place better to do that than at 'home.' I'm not fussed with the one year deal as I'm usually too p***** off at the 3 year deals we give away to very average players.

A fit and injury free Carruthers is one of the tidier players in this league, I look forward to seeing him play, particularly alongside Jack Roles as Laker mentioned. Some quality in the middle for once !!

It sounds similar to when we signed Isgrove on a 1 year deal. And as its proved from the first few games this season, he is way too good for this division. If we don't get promoted, I think he'll move up the leagues to at least a league 1 side.

We signed Dapo Afolayan on loan from West Ham yesterday, any Oldham fans have a opinion?

Expect one or two more, we desperately need a midfielder and a defender would be good too.

It has a ring of Rohan Ince to it as well. It's worthwhile our clubs taking these chances, even for one season.

If it pays off then players will realise that it doesn't hurt to drop a couple of levels to get your career back on track.

Scunny fans - we (Notts) have signed Kyle Wootton on a season loan from you lot. Any good? Do a job in NL?

If he's that good, it's better to have 1 good year out of him than 0 at all.

He's had 3 loan spells in the NL, including at us, and scored 3 in 30 or something.

Thought that we had had a good early transfer window, not so much now but we'll see what happens between now and Monday and how they come together after that. Still hopeful of a decent season...

He's a trier but all in all he's simply shit. He will give his all but he just isn't good enough really.

Not sure why we've let him to though as that leaves us with one fit striker for tomorrow's game unless we sign someone today.

Rumours of us trying to get Jamie Proctor though.
